Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Widley and Old Purbrook.
« on: Monday 16 May 16 10:11 BST (UK)  »
Thank-you Nell. As I am pressed for time I may not bother with Widley then!
I did not really think I would find gravestones of the ancestors ( anywhere except Farlington, where I know some exist), as apart from them being as common as muck, the stones would be too early for hope of survival. I just wanted to get "the lie of the land", record names of contemporaries if any, and of old families in the area, etc., as general background. And look for later, modern, descendants or possibles.

Thank-you for the quick reply and help. Much appreciated.

Hi all,

Some local knowledge needed, please!

I have the chance to be in the Portsmouth area next week and wanted to visit the Churchyards around that (should) contain the ancestor's graves. -Farlington, N&S Hayling, Wymering and Widley. But am I right ( having been Googling) that Widley Church is now demolished and all the gravestones removed?
If so, does anyone know where they are, if they were recorded, and where I can access MIs? Is the site worth visiting now?
Also, are there any gravestones left at the 2? churches on Hayling Island?

Any help gratefully received....(am looking for names Miles, Palmer, Vallar, Ivemy, Sparkes, Legg(e) and Toms.

My Miles lot were blacksmiths at Purbrook, does anyone know where the smithy was?

Thank-you,
Sally

Its on UK search..and the Quaker meeting is UK.....but "race" as in "colour of skin" only occurs on US records from much later than this. I'm objecting to stating "facts" that are not facts at all, are completely irrelevant etc. And someone put that there...why??

I am gobsmacked.And how have they verified this?? Don't know what they think they are doing, unless they are now being sponsored by some really dodgy political group.This is my search result for a quaker burial/death;

Name; Jennet Wilson
Gender; ( I think they mean sex) Female
Race; ( do they mean colour of skin?) White
Age; 60
Birthdate; ( I presume they mean birth year approximate) 1718
Deathdate; 6 Sep 1778

Kent / Re: Stanhopes of Chevening/Sevenoaks.

I'm not doubting your aural history at all here, but could it be that this is a memory muddle? There was a ship called the Earl Stanhope which docked at New Zealand in 1841- taking early settlers I believe. ( not sure if they'd come from England or NSW).

Otherwise how old was William, was he from Kent? Do you have his baptism?
btw Chevening is not "in" Sevenoaks, its a nearby but entirely separate Parish.

Yes, I think you are right. I have now managed to get a bit working again. But I shall struggle with this new site for a long time I am sure- last year I switched back several times as I could not get anything done in the new format!!! ho hum. Maybe time to abandon Ancestry next renewal date.

Technical Help / Ancestry
« on: Thursday 07 January 16 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
hi all, hoping for some help!
I have not used Ancestry for about a month. Today I can't seem to use it at all!!!

I have been flopped over to the "improved site"- cant get off it, can't get any search buttons to work,
some pages won't come up at all, can't even "verify" my pass word, which on and off it wants me to do.  Is this me do you think, or is there a problem today? Any ideas?

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Re: Waddingworth baptisms; Tuxworth

Yes, thank-you I have her marriage to Charles Johnson ( not James father!)- its Thomas Rowson, who married one of Mary's sisters...Thomas tuxworth is James' uncle. But that has got me no where on being absolutely sure of Mary's parents as I can't find her baptism or those of Thomas and Elizabeth /Ann Rowson either!! But, thank-you anyway.
