Dumfriesshire / ancestors of Samuel Ferguson 1748-1810 of Keir
« on: Sunday 26 February 23 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,
I can evidence this lineage up to the point where Samuel Ferguson born 1748  ,He was a shoemaker in Nether Keir village which used to be located on Nether Keir farm,Keir, Dumfriesshire. He married Margaret Mc Michel in 1776 according to OPR Keir.
I am having trouble evidencing any parents further back.

eg  I wondered if these are these possible parents.??
John Ferguson or Fergusone 1720-1769 m Agnes Dunkell 1724-1769 -this John is possibly the son of Anna (Annie) Laurie 1682-1764 and Alexander Ferguson 1685-1749. These are on many online trees as his ancestors but I can't find any evidence to support a link.
Can anyone help please?

Midlothian / Re: Woolfords and Tarbrax

Well that's my mother's birth place found thanks to you all for clarifying that.

Conclusion is that the row of houses which has the current sign "Woolfords" in 2021 is the  same "New" Woolfords in 1923 on mums birth cert and appears on maps also as Woolfords cottages. I could not believe that there were 28 never mind 40+ houses in that row...they must be tiny inside! Thank you all.

I will now see if I can use those very helpful links you suggested to find the Tarbrax mission Church as it was known in 1945. ;)

The valuation roll for 1925 confirms the address I want to find as being 28 New Woolfords, Cobbinshaw, where mum was born, can anyone tell me if this still exists today please and where?

Midlothian / Woolfords and Tarbrax
« on: Sunday 11 July 21 20:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Two places I would like to have photos of but am not sure where they are. Hopefully, someone will know.
1 is Tarbrax Mission Church where my mother was married and played the organ there on Sundays.

2 is 28 New Woolfords, Midlothian where my mother was born in 1923. When trying to identify the actual dwelling I am confused by the Old or New Woolfords and Woolford's cottages. Can anyone help please? Cobbinshaw loch was nearby.

I was up there at Tarbrax quick tour today and saw 2 churches, recently converted into homes but did not know which one it was. Not far away, I saw a row of houses called Woolfords...was that "new" Woolfords but there were not as many as 28 dwellings re the address being 28 New Woolfords??   Grateful for any clarification, Thanks, folks.

World War Two / How to find out which service Uncle served in in WW2
« on: Sunday 10 November 19 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to find out which service my husband's uncle was in. He served before and during WW2. With a common name John [Johnny] Murray, it has been impossible so far. [Even now that I have found his D.OB  3 Dec 1914, Russell St., Ayr, Scotland ] He was mentioned in dispatches apparently at some point. Searched Ancestry and Forces War records. He was [in the Army?] in the Middle East Campaign and went right to the end of the war finishing up in Germany having stormed Hamburg and occupied it. He died in Queensland Australia in 2009 having had no contact with family for many years. Anyone got any ideas about how to find out about his time in WW2, please?

Hi everyone,
I have just downloaded the baptism record for John Murray. I am having trouble working out the place name in New Luce. Is it Cruiues? Cruives? Does it mean Cruise farm or as per dictionary meaning of Cruives... hovels.... somewhere in New luce? Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
