Travelling People / Re: Barrington Buckland, Somerset

 Hello Bfgaffin
What I mean by real Romany >  (also spelled Romani) colloquially known as gypsies, which many do not like to be referred too, as this is mistaken identity they were given when arriving in England thought to be from Egypt. That has followed them as name with all the stereotyping to be feared or exiled and avoided by settled folki and they themselves having to deny their heritage to survive. The Romani were painted as thieves and tricksters, in particular because of their nomadic lifestyle and  in the eyes of the Christian Church during their early migrations. heathens to be persecuted for what they considered unorthodox practices/cultural traditions  etc . They are an ethnic group, traditionally itinerant, originating from the northern Indian subcontinent, from the Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab regions of modern-day India. The Buckland/Buckley family were one of the founder families.

So you are part of the historical Buckland/Buckley lineage descending from Richard And Dolleretta Parfrey/Buckland, but once Dolleretta married Richard who was from settled folki then all her descendants took a different path marrying further outside of her people and not leading the life of Romani unlike her parents.
This is not being disrespectful to you or your ancestry, but it obvious you don't know about that side of your ancestry and that tells me it was not spoken about by your families, which sadly happened a lot to families when one of Romani people married into settled folki compared to those who continued to wed their own people as did their children and follow the traditions and culture.

I will say again this does not mean you are not still part of  the historical Buckland/Buckley lineage, just that your ancestry from Dolleretta marrying Richard took a different path and became part of Richard lifestyle in comparison to those today who have kept closer to their families marrying cousins and leading the Romani lifestyle.

Not sure if anyone is still searching these families of Smith/Plumb came across a marriage.

22 Sep 1850 Marriage Place:Derby, St Alkmund, Derbyshire, Silvey Plumb born 1825 married Charles Smith born 1826. Fathers Robert Plumb and John Smith.

Waltham on the Wolds and Stow Green Fair were places that I know at least some of the Gypsies would be found known as Lincolnshire Gypsies Brown Gray Elliotts Smith and sometimes Boswell Heron and Lovell from other parts of England. The Booths were known to reside  at Melton Mowbray and there is a story of ancestor a woman which they  said her picture hangs in Belvoir Castle.

1861 23 May Nottinghamshire Samuel Curson and Everett Plumb  2 gypsies were charged with camping on highway in parish of  Maplebeck - ordered to pay costs and warned if found similarly offending they would be  severely punished.

1869 28 May Stamford Mercury  Thomas Elliott charged with using a dog to kill game and assaulting police.... he was fined and costs paid.
Between 5 & 6 am of  13th a considerable number of gypsy tribe were traveling in Vans and other vehicles accompanied by a drove of horses down old Foss road between Cotgrave & Kinoulton.
Everett Plumb and Spencer Smith were charged with similar offences as was Wm Grey another gypsy charged with using a gun and killing a hare on land of Mr hoard Farmer of Cotsgrave. The case was adjourned.

Hi everyone on this chat x

Welcome Jade :) you are in right place, its same family we are chatting about. I have already explained my own connections, my Grt Grandmother Bessie Smith ( the photo is Bessie) was Peggy/Maggie Smith sister, they were Romani folkie and married Romani men .

I have loads of information on the bigger family, having been researching my ancestors for over 20 plus years......which also leads to USA as in family connections..
I will just say some of family linked do not like to talk about this part of family being Romani or as most country folkie call them Gypsies, especially if they married out as we call it to a non romani.
I am proud of my heritage and happy to help if someone genuinely wants to know about their ancestry.
Although I feel its a  personal journey we decide to take and the enjoyment is finding out ourselves, its also great to find living family, just beware not all though will share your need or want to know for what ever reasons and respect this and don't judge them.
We are all parts of a jigsaw puzzle coming together piece by piece to make the puzzle complete.

Here are a few tips I learnt along the way>
Get where you can certificates Birth Marriage  Deaths- They hold important info for many different reasons, but will give you facts to help you.

Don't copy and accept cos someone has a family tree its factually correct> always do your own research and compare or you can find yourself following wrong families.

When you find anyone who is connected be polite and respectful, not all will share your excitement at finding them and many don't even know they have connections to Romani and because of the way sadly history past and present makes out they are bad people will deny connections. Or you might be unlucky and meet certain ones who boast they are experts on everything and everyone romani and of course they are 100% rom with not a family tree ,but a forest !
Possibly that is worse can happen and those people are not interested in family history only pumping people to get info and to make out they are something they are not, just be aware they are out there.

Photos -Be careful who you share with if you don't want to see them spread over internet. We all love to see especially our passed ancestors, there is nothing I feel compares with seeing relatives maybe you never knew existed and excitement of wow the likenesses. Some people again don't respect they are personal to you ad yours.

Lastly I highly recommend taking a DNA test . Its a whole new way of confirming many things and finding new relations and understanding your family origins way back in past.

Not to sound all negative :) There is positive side - the excitement and thrills of finding out about your ancestors. Meeting living cousins sharing your families history ( which I am really excited to say that in next few weeks I am meeting a cousin face to face from USA coming over for family reunion ! )

Hi Debs sorry not answered before had not seen replies to posts  :) xx

Regards the Thomas family yes Stephen James Thomas did wed Defiance Orchard. Stephen was b 1892 Sithney Cornwall and wed in 1915 Helston. He came from Cornish folkie as in he was not romani he married into a Romani family, so for all those descended from this couple the Romani blood comes from Defiance side.

Jade > You don't mention the name of your father ? I am assuming he was  by surname Thomas & son of Stephen J Thomas and Defiance Orchard.
There was a daughter Fiance Thomas, but she died, born 1916-1918.
Stephen and Defiance had several children . 5 daughters and 3 sons.

Travelling People / Re: Major Boswell
« on: Monday 15 April 19 16:13 BST (UK)  »
Thank you both for replies, I am not sure its Deleta wife of Clark who is mother of this Major, as she died in 1844 Risbridge Suffolk according to records if correct,so would not be living in 1871. I think Deliah is in 1880  USA Oakland, Alameda, California, as sister of Josiah Boswell b 1823 England and he appears to be the son of Edward Boswell and Phillis Lee. ( known as Devonshire Boswells)
Delia Boswell was baptised 5 Feb 1808 :Paignton,Devon,England > Edward and Phillie.

It seems she then returned to UK to be found in 1881 Derbyshire Tinknall living alone.I have not located a death though.

John Boswell 17 Jun 1862
Baptism Place:   Packwood, Warwickshire,  Major & Eliza ( tinker)

OConnor Boswell 12 Jul 1867

Closier Wall Boswell 28 Jan 1873 ( female)

I found 3 baptisms all done on same day 25th October 1885
William Henry Tribe b 1885 26th May
Ada Agnes  Tribe b 1880 7th July
Edith Annie Tribe b 1883  29th April :

The parents given were Wm Henry Tribe ( labour) Benhilton, All Saints, Surrey, England and mother Mary Annie Maria Hooper
This I can confirm mother of Ada Agnes  birth register 1880 Epsom, she was registered as Hooper thus due to mother not officially being wed.

In 1881 Census Ada Agnes is living with her grandfather Frederick ( bricklayers labour) widower in Espom also her mother Mary and an Emily b 1874 Epsom who was Mary sister and went on to marry Alfred Brewer in 1891 Epsom.> a year after her sister weds Wm H Tribe.
The deceased mother was Maria Rowley having wed  Frederick Hooper on 21 Jul 1861
Marriage Place:   Ewell, St Mary, Surrey, England.

1890 13th Jan marriage of Wm H Tribe born 1861 to Mary Hooper b 1864 in ewell surrey. Wm now says he is itinerant musician, no father given and Mary Hooper gives father Fredrick Hooper labour. The one noticeable thing I see both  signed names not by marks, which suggests both can read and write.

I cannot see anything that suggests from mothers side they were romany .

I did find this in 1871 Espom Wm Tribe b 1863 Espom as grandson with grandparents John b 1818 Sussex wife Martha  Rapson married in 1837 Lurgashall,Sussex,England. I cannot confirm this is right Wm Tribe just thought I let you know might be worth researching.
