Norrie,
Thanks!  Apologies for the delay in replying, I literally only just spotted this reply:-(

Capt. William Couper is gg-grandfather's brother and somewhere there is a letter by him written in Rawalpindi in 1861.  He joined the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders in 1852 (claiming he was 17!) and I believe he was at Balaclava . . .

I had assumed he had stayed in India as he transferred to a "native" regiment for a promotion to Sergeant but I didn't follow his records after the transfer.

If you have an image of his gravestone that would be fantastic!

I'm pretty sure this was taken near Rotherham, but I've no idea of the date (or who the lady is) . . . any ideas?

The software I use lets me transcribe the census data and I auto-generate all my web pages from this.

For example, see:

Durham / 68-69 Saddler Street, Durham

Astonishing what you can find online.  I knew my mum's family had run shops in Durham which are now the sweet shop and Waterstone's on Saddler Street (http://g.co/maps/95yaj).

But I just found the conveyancing details online as well - they bought No.68 for £1475 in 1878 + £25 for fixtures and fittings:

When the Earl's owned it was a fruiterer, confectioner + tobacconist.

I get all my census returns online (from Ancestry).  For each return, I save it to my computer and then transcribe it.

The program I use (my own, though I'm considering productising it) understand the UK census so everything is linked to a person and is fully searchable.  E.g. http://www.jebbo.co.uk/genealogy/I173.html - see the "sources" section at the bottom of the page.

I auto-generate web pages: http://www.jebbo.co.uk/genealogy/tree.html

The format is still a  bit of a work in progress . . .

Montgomeryshire / John WATKIN, born ~1800
« on: Wednesday 12 October 11 14:21 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking for a John Watkin, born in Newtown for ages.  His age is consistent in multiple censuses, as is the place of birth (Newtown).

I think I've finally pinned him down (thanks to the online records @ findmypast).  I've certainly got him down to a choice of two:

* John WATKIN, born 6 Jul 1800, Llandyssil, parents Rhees Watkin & Mary
* John WATKIN, born 3 Jun 1800, Trefeglwys, parents Thomas Watkin & Elizabeth.

I suspect the one I want is the son of Rhees (who appears in the 1841 census living in Newtown) but I'm wondering if anyone else is looking at WATKIN genealogy in the area?

I can't find much trace of the other John (father Thomas) . . . so I can't really rule him out.

Or if anyone has any ideas to the slippery b****r down?

Norrie,
Do you have anything on Peter COUPER (died 1880 in Abbosthall) and his wife Catherine (died 1883 in Newington), please?

Also, how far back do the headstones go as I have quite a few from that area?
