Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Parish Register Lookup: Lacock (St. Cyriac) 1840
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help with a check of the actual entry in the Parish Register for the following entry taken from FamilySearch:

Name:   Edmund or Edwin Bath
Gender:   Male
Christening Date:   12 Apr 1840
Christening Place:   Laycock, Wiltshire, England
Father's Name:   Holly
Mother's Name:   Ann Bath

Source details: Indexing Project (Batch) Number   C15271-1;   Film Number   : 1279307

There is no entry for the Birth in the GRO Indexes, nor on the WiltshireBMD (Register Office Index) site, so presumably the birth wasn't registered and, unfortunately, I can't obtain a Birth Certificate.

Sunflower,

Three entries for Lever Baxendale on New York passenger lists:

Ship: Megantic - Arrived New York 31 Dec 1929, Age: 45, Crew Member (Scullion),  Length of Service 10 years
Ship: Samaria - Arrived New York 16 Oct 1933, Age: 51, Crew Member (Asst. Cook), Length of Service 8 years
Ship: Britannic - Arrived New york 14 Nov 1935, Age: 55, Crew Member ("K.P."_ presumably Kitchen Porter) Length of Service 5 years.

Mervyn.

P.S. Other records include Baptism at New Wortley (Leeds), WWI Pension Records (Wife shown as Anna HOUGHTON), GRO Index entries Birth, Marriage & Death, Various Electoral Registers (London), Probate Index (1972)  All probably relate to same person, though calculated year of birth do vary.

Dotty,

Have sent you a message with some brief background on George Haydon. Hope it helps and thank you for your kind offer of assistance.  I know from my background research that the Admissions Registers for Haslingden Workhouse haven't survived.

By the way George is one of my Great-Grandparents and because of his mysterious origins he remains one of my major brick walls.

Hadyn,

Thanks very much for your help, and sorry about the delay getting back to you - separate e-mail sent direct.

Now to try to track down John Hughes & Jane Williams!  Still, it could have been Smith.

Dotty,

Thanks for the suggestion, and sorry for the delay in replying.

I'm still trying all possible combinations of events that might have led to George Haydon being in Haslingdon Workhouse in 1871, but haven't been able to identify anything that fits so far.  I still find it strange that he was the only child amongst approximately 150 inmates.

Wondering if there is anyone out there with knowledge of the Union Haslingden Workhouse who could help me to try to solve a problem.

Unfortunately the admissions records have not survived, which leaves me with a very solid brick wall that I can't break down about one of the inmates listed in the 1871 Census, i.e.:

George Hayden   Inmate   7   Scholar   Born: Altrincham, Cheshire.

According to the Census he was the only 'child' in the workhouse out of more than 150 inmates and no other Haydens appear.  I can find no corresponding birth registration in Cheshire or any indication of why he turned up in Haslingden.

Caernarvonshire Lookup Requests / Trefriw Parish Records, 1813 - COMPLETED

Wondering if anyone has easy access to the Parish registers for Trefriw.

I am looking for confirmation of the following IGI extract to see if there is any additional information about the parents:

07 Feb 1813, William HUGHES, Parents: John HUGHES/Jane WILLIAMS, Trefriw, Caernarvon, Wales, C096231

I assume the parents weren't married as, looking at other entries, it doesn't appear to have been normal practice to record the mother's maiden name in the register

Thanks.

Sandy,

Thanks for that. It confirms that I need to concentrate on the Geddington Parish Records.  Also clears up why one of Henry's grand children (my direct ancestor) was named Hames Ashby.
