Armed Forces / Malta 1870s
« on: Friday 06 August 21 14:29 BST (UK)  »

Hi all,

I have a George Wheeler, a Staff Sergeant in the Army Service Corps, deployed to Malta in about 1876 with his new wife and infant daughter.
In 1881 he was back in England.

So, what was the Army doing in Malta at this time, was it a permanent garrison or a short term deployment?

Also whilst in Malta the couple had three more children of whom two died in 1880. Was this a tragiccoincidence or an outbreak of some disease in Malta at this time?

Thank-you,

Maurice

Other Countries / George Wheeler in Malta
« on: Wednesday 04 August 21 14:56 BST (UK)  »

I have so far traced my wifes Wheeler family back to about 1767 in Somerset but there Is a more recent connection to Malta I would like to explore.

I have George Wheeler, born Bristol abt Dec 1844, in the1871 census he is a Corporal in the Army Service Corps; RG 10 / 2041 / 63 / p 14.

George Wheeler married Clara Jones in Dec 1874 in Portsea, Hants., and their first child, Anne, is born 187 5in Portsmouth.

It appears that he was deployed o Malta where three other children were born, of whom two sadly died: Minnie born 1878 died1880, Richard born 1879 died 1880 and Frederick born 1880.

In the1881census, v, he is back in Cheshire as a Warrant Officer.

However, it is the Malta years I would like to find more information on; the dates of births and deaths, were the two 1880deaths connected?

Cananyone help, or point me in the right direction?

Thank-you,

Maurice

Montgomeryshire / Thomas family in/around Buttington
« on: Saturday 18 March 17 14:17 GMT (UK)  »

I need some help in unravelling my Thomas family in and around Buttington.

I have the following entry in the 1841 census:
Piece:1442 Book:1 Folio:9 Page:9
WilliamThomas      75
MarthaThomas      55
ArthurThomas      10
Mary Thomas        5

I have Arthur and Mary’s baptism from the Buttington PRs; parents William and Martha:
Arthur   5th Dec 1830      abode Cletterwood   father’s occupation   Labourer
Mary      11th May 1834      Cletterwood      Labourer

But the age differences between William, Martha and Arthur and Mary seem high ?

I have both William and Martha’s burials from the Buttington PRs:
William Thomas buried at Buttington, 3rd March 1842, aged 76, abode Cletterwood.
Martha Thomas buried at Buttington, 18th June 1866, aged 77, abode Cletterwood.

Also from the Buttington PRs, baptisms with parents William and Martha Thomas:
Jane      31st May 1814      Buttington
Margret   18th April 1819      Cletterwood   Farmer
Frances   3rd Nov 1821      Cletterwood   Farmer
John      24th May 1829      Cwmsale      Farmer

So problems, would a farmer become a Labourer and/or is this one family, two or more?

Can’t find a birth for William or a marriage for William and Martha.

Can anyone help unravel this?

Thank-you

Maurice

I have one in the 1881 census who gives his occupation as "Local Methodist Preacher, Provision Dealer & Forge Engineer"

Wonder what he did in his spare time.  :)
