Nairnshire / James Robertson/ McIntyre b 3 Jul 1882 Nairn
« on: Sunday 03 July 22 17:40 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a James McIntyre born 3 Jul 1882 in Nairn. James was illegitimate and was registered as James Robertson son of Mary Robertson - a domestic servant. (I also have another chat going about another illegitimate child of Mary's). He was born at 92 Harbour Street Nairn. By 1891 he was known as James McIntyre and in 1901 he was still McIntyre. His mother had left him with her mother Mary Robertson or Smith in Nairn while she went off to Edinburgh to work. In the 1901 census James was an apprentice shoemaker. After that I lost him. I am not sure where he went.
Something that did not help in my search was the fact that there was another James McIntyre born in Nairn in December 1882 and strangely born in the same address as my James - 92 Harbour Street!!
This James joined the Royal Highlanders in 1914 and died in Germany in June 1915.
Does anyone know of a James Robertson/ McIntyre. There are lots of them in the Scotlandspeople indexes but I certainly could not afford to download them all in the hope of finding him. I am still not sure why his name was changed to McIntyre but I am almost positive it had to be something to do with his mother Mary. She did something similiar later on to another illegitimate child. After all my James was born in the house of a John McIntyre, his wife and family!!! I am sure there is a story there.

No it is not her death or marriage I am afraid. I still think the 1921 census is my best bet.

Mary originally falsely registered her daughter as Janet Anderson Sinclair claiming also a marriage to a Mr Sinclair none of which was true. The authorities changed the birth certificate to Janet Robertson and added illegitimate. Mary  never even mentioned her marriage to George Ledingham. Goodness knows why she did all this. Janet was not the only illegitimate child that Mary had and she was less than truthful more than once until she married Donald  Campbell. She seems to have changed her ways then.

Mary was married twice first to George Ledingham from Edinburgh then to Donald Campbell from Nairn. Janet was with her uncle William Robertson and his wife in Buckie in 1911. I have the census for that. I think she was maybe called Jessie in the census. Mary was married 2nd time round from her brother William's house then back to Nairn where she and her new husband moved into her late mother's house in Harbour Street Nairn.

No Mary had no children with Donald Campbell. Her death was registered by Maggie Alexander of 30 Harbour Street Nairn. She was Mary's step daughter

Nairnshire / Janet Robertson b 1 Mar 1901

I am trying to find out what happened to Janet Robertson b 1 Mar 1901 in Forres. Her mother Mary belonged to Nairn. Janet was illegitimate but when Mary registered her birth she falsely claimed to be married to a James Sinclair from Nairn. She even gave the marriage date. All lies. She was caught out in her lies and the Sheriff ordered her daughters birth certificate to be changed to Janet Robertson instead of Sinclair. I found out all this in the Register of Corrected Entries. Mary had also given false information on the 1901 census for Forres. I found Janet in 1911 in Buckie in her uncle William's household. Mary surfaced again in 1915 when she got married to a Nairn slater Donald Campbell of 1 Findlays Buildings Park Street Nairn. I assume her daughter would have been with her at this time but I can't seem to find anything about her. I am waiting impatiently for the 1921 census to come out later this year. I am hoping it will help solve my mystery. Mary and Donald went to stay in Harbour Street Nairn. Donald died in 1925 and Mary died in 1949. Does anyone know anything about this family.

Thank you every one who helped me to find all the info on my great uncle George Robertson. He lost touch with his family in Scotland and it took me ages to track him down.

Hi John
Have I got your name correct? Thank you very much for all your help. I never thought that George's wife was Flora. The 1939 Register definitely looks like Mona. It also looks as if Flora went on to marry again after George's death. I will get the marriage certificate to check that. I am off now to get George and Flora's marriage certificate. You were right about who George's parents were.
Many thanks for all your help

Moray (Elginshire) / Peggy Robertson 1907
« on: Sunday 12 June 22 11:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi Tina
How I managed to miss this message of yours I do not know. I am so glad I found it though. It solves the mystery of Peggy. It turned out to be such a sad story. Don't give up looking for information on her. I finally found out what happened to William Robertson's sister Mary. It took ages to unravel and so now I have to find out what happened to Jessie/Janet who was her daughter and was the girl with Peggy in 1911 in the home of William and Jessie. I am now waiting patiently for the 1921 census to be published. I hope it might throw up some useful information. Thank you for your help.
