Hi Kate

The newspapers are really in need of some  TLC - someone has gone through some of the  pages and removed certain articles.  The only thing I could think of was to buy the large clear art folders so that each of these pages could be not only protected but re filed.  Then I looked at the cost and decided it was just too big a job for me to undertake - not sure if the British Library would be interested in these Wigan newspapers because it just might be too expensive for them also - again I am not sure just how many of the Wigan newspapers from 1871 have survived.

Many thanks for the idea though, if all else fails I could always send them an e-mail and see what they say.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: 1841 census Harriet Auty
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 08:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello Lesley and Jennifer,

Very many thanks for finding that information re Harriet Auty's family.  Will have to plead a " senior moment " It was Harriet Auty who married William Stanley who was a minor when she married and was 7 years younger than her husband William, Harriet born 1829 married 1847 -  Harriet was Christened in the August of 1829 and married 28th December 1847 - 18 years old.

The 1861 census does show that her mother Sarah Auty nee Shillito was  seven years older than her husband Thomas Auty - think I have that right now.  Although in later census the years between Sarah and Thomas are much less than 7 years - in 1881 Sarah is 77 and Thomas 76.

Many thank for all your help

Hello Luzzu

Many thanks for getting in touch, received both of your messages and will certainly take it up with Brian.  The stories in these papers of 1871 as you would expect  are so very different from the modern day reporting, especially reports on crime,  a murder story was really quite chilling and the Court case that followed was equally as graphic. It would be great if someone could not only restore but actually make them available to the public as the reports on all of the mining accidents in Wigan and the surrounding area - and there were many - listed all of the fatalities and their families.  No scaremongering re Rabies in 1871 , just a letter to the Editor written by the local vet giving the details of a dog infected with disease and the areas that it had passed through.  One could literally spend many hours reading these old newspapers and certainly have a very different picture of life in Wigan in the year 1871.
Thanks again
Susan

Need help in finding Harriet Auty born  in 1829 christened in Adwick le Street in August 1829 her parents were Thomas and Sarah Auty.  Thomas born about 1810 and Sarah was 7 years younger . In 1847 the family were living in Hampole when their daughter Harriet married William Stanley at The Parish Church Adwick le Street. Census from 1861 has Thomas ( a labourer) and Sarah living  in Hampole.Any help with the Auty name would really be appreciated as I have drawn a complete blank and hit a really big brick wall.  Want to know if Harriet ( my gt. gt. grandmother ) had any brothers or sisters
Many thanks

Lancashire / Wigan Observer Newspapers for 1871

This complete year of original newspapers is in a very old green library type folder - sadly some of the newspapers have been" attacked " by someone who was obviously interested in certain issues appearing, so some pages have sections cut out.  The births marriages and deaths seem to have survived as do most of the Court Sessions and local news like the pit disasters which lists all the names of the fatalities.  Have no idea what is best for these newspapers, could they or should they be restored  - they certainly make fascinating reading - I found the newspapers at a local antique fair and thought they should be saved but don't know how or if it is possible to restore them or really what to do with them.  I have a feeling they were possibly discarded by a library because of their condition.

Re Zebulon Ayres.

I have just typed the name in on the Findmypast site and under that name there are these records.
3 Births at Sea, 1 Record in the Parish Registers, 1 Record of marriage and 1 Record of Divorce.  The name is also mentioned once under the heading " other records " For those not too interested in football then Findfmypast are allowing a free 90 minute search of their files whilst England are playing.  You do have to register but there is no charge for that but if I read it properly the 90 minutes starts from the moment you sign in on Sunday so best have all notes and queries ready . Hope this helps - might not be your Zebulon but at least it will be worth a look for free

Such an unusual name no doubt transcribers  through the years have had a field day working out what to put.  Was Zebulon the first child ??  my gt. gt grandparents first child was born out of wedlock and was registered in her mother's maiden name in all official records.  Then I have a family bible entry for another branch of the family -  the very first name was a child that is not listed in any records, was born before the parents married, but the Bible entry still lists him by his father's name, this child has remained a mystery.

Just goes to show that no records are perfect even the Family Bible can have an off day - bit like the IGI -  I found an entry that stated that one of my relatives was buried before he was born!!!!
