Technical Help / Avg Free discontinued ??
« on: Friday 18 October 13 18:52 BST (UK)  »
I have been getting messages asking me to purchase AVG Internet Security 2014. I have used AVG Free for many years, and have never had any trouble. Are AVG stopping their free service?
I have a laptop running XP3, and have upgraded each time I have been notified of th necessity.

The Common Room / Re: Relationship puzzle for help in solving please?
« on: Sunday 09 June 13 22:51 BST (UK)  »
Not meaning to be a nuisance, but I have another similar query  :-[
My first cousin once removed (Norman) married the sister-in-law (Mabel) of Douglas.
Douglas has a son (who is married to another of my best friends).
I have worked it out that this son is the nephew of the wife of my first cousin once removed.
Is there a link apart from the 'by marriage' one? And have I got it right please?

Thank you for the comments already received.

After much pottering around, I have tried to make the picture clearer, I hope this helps!

1. My nephew is my sister's son.
His friend is the son of the brother-in-law of our first cousin (male) once removed.

Is there a genealogical type of relationship between my nephew and his friend ?

My brain thinks I have it at one minute, the next minute I'm fuddled again!!

What I do know is that my nephew's friend's mother and I were great friends in our teenage years, but sadly lost touch.

Any help will be gratefully received,

The Common Room / Relationship puzzle for help in solving please?

My nephew (aged 40) has a best friend whom I have discovered (beyond any doubt) to be the son of the nephew of the wife of my first cousin once removed.
I have tried to determine the 'official' relationship (if any) there is between my nephew and his friend, but I am stuck! PLEASE can anyone help?

In case names may help, John, (my 1st cousin once removed), married Mary.
                                     Mary had a brother Cyril
Cyril married Audrey, and their son Frederick is my nephew's friend.

The odd thing is, Cyril's wife Audrey was a friend of mine during our teenage years, and the relationship to me was spotted in a family member's wedding photo!

Worcestershire Completed Look up Requests / Re: Wallhouse, Great Witley
« on: Wednesday 13 February 13 23:40 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not sure if this will be of any help, but there is an English Heritage property called Witley Court at Great Witley, in Worcestershire. It is currently a magnificent ruin, but has an enormous fountain in the grounds, and attracts many visitors. If you google Witley Court, Worcestershire there is a telephone number, and someone may be able to help the Wall House. (Perhaps a Gatehouse for the Court?).
It's a bit late now, so I haven't looked, but there may be a website.

1. Bad weather, black clouds in the sky, prompted "Looks like a shower of knobby horsemuck".

2. When asked what something was, "It's a wimwam for a duck's back".

I can remember being told off for being 'mardy'.

Staffordshire / Re: Mother and baby home ??

Just thought, I should have mentioned that her parents lived at Codsall, which is some way from Trysull, but Codsall came under the Trysull Union area (as far as I can gather). I got the details from the Staffordshire Record Office.

My gt-grandfather was illegitimate, and was born iin 1860 at the Union Workhouse at Trysull, near Wolverhampton. His mother was a 'house servant', and she was presumably 'kicked out' by her parents (her father was an agricultural labourer, so probably they could not afford to keep her at home). She left the Workhouse shortly after his birth, but two months later she was back in again, described as "destitute". A widowed local shoemaker later married her, (he had five children of his own, so there was a happy ending!
