South Africa / Braamfontein Cemetery, Johannesburg - help
« on: Friday 08 September 17 20:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Am fairly certain my great grandmother was buried in Braamfontein Cemetery but am based in Scotland and have never had the chance to visit in person. I do have a copy of a photograph of her gravestone (attached) but frustratingly cannot make out the inscription. I can, however, see the number on the grave marker:19773. If anyone has access to records for this cemetery I would be so grateful for any information.
Details are:
Name: Jane (Jeannie) Allan, maiden surname Robertson
Died: 17 July 1909 (Johannesburg)
Many thanks

Hi Jeff

I believe my great great grandfather Walter McAlpine was the brother of Sophia Sinclair McAlpine. His only surviving son William Sinclair McAlpine, 1893 to 1938 (there was a younger son Malcolm Sinclair McAlpine who died aged one) was my great grandfather on my mother's side. I recall seeing the name Adam Duncan on a Glasgow family census, presumably a brother of your grandmother? Apologies for the lack of dates, I don't have all my family tree info directly to hand at the moment.

Regards

Claire

Hi
I've also found this picture. It looks to me as if this might be the same man (although I could be wrong) on the front left.

I don't, although I know that my great grandfather spent some time in France (not too sure when), although he wasn't born until around 1900. He possibly brought the picture back then.

Hello

I was wondering if anyone could help identify the following uniform / regiment which I believe is from WW1.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Many thanks
