I have been doing my family tree for over 20 years now.

My Grandfathers family have been in Fordingbridge for over 400 years, and over the years have married into other families in the town, so looking at the parish records, on each page is about 4 or 5 of my relatives due to the fact I am probably related to most of the town one way or another.

Recently I took a trip there and was really excited to go to Fordingbridge church, thinking that every other gravestone would be a family member. Imagine my horror to find half a dozen gravestones in the church cementry! I spoke to the warden who said that in 1900 the churchyard was full up so they purchased a field on the outskirts of town to bury people in, fair enough, but they flattened the existing gravesyard! and to add insult to injury they put a few headstones around the church wall but the rest they made a path out of!

Has anyone else heard of this happening? I am still furious that a church could do this to the headstones!

Hi Deb

That's interesting! a convict in the family!  :o lol I will have to research this on Thursday, after Christmas. I have my whole family coming for dinner tonight so lots of cooking! :)

I think you are right if we work together we should be able to solve this mystery.

I hope you and your family have a great Christmas Deb and speak to you Thursday.

15th December 1877 William HICKS 54 Bachelor Labourer Gorley & Jane VINEY 60 Widow Gorley by Banns fathers George HICKS Labourer & James CLARK Labourer in the presence of Humphrey VINEY & Eliza VINEY

This is what I have on this - Jane Viney (nee Clark) was James & Sarah's daughter, she first married William Viney in 1836, I have William dying in 1874, so she would be a widow in 1877, she died in 1886. Humphrey Viney was one of her sons and Eliza (nee Witt) was his wife. Didn't have her 2nd marriage!  :)

James & Elizabeth had a son called Benjamin b.1816 so this fits  :)

elizabeth curl 35 yes

benjamin clark 25 lab yes
jane viney 20
charles viney 3
umphrey viney 1

I have Jeremiah & Rachel Hayter on my tree but not sure how they connect to the Clark's, Jeremiah's mother was Christabelle Blachford. Maybe they are not related at all, I think I am related one way or another to most of Fordingbridge!  :o We know Elizabeth, Benjamin & Jane were brother and sisters, and charles & Humphrey Viney were Jane's children -so another one that fits!  :) FYI Jane's other son, William is my Great Grandad  :) his son, Ernest, had a daughter called Sarah, who had a daughter called Lorraine = Me  :o lol

I think you are on the right road, I will do a bit of research this afternoon on the Clark's as info is minimal and you seem to have alot more than I do. I will let you know how I get on.

You've got me started again!! spent 20 years on this project to date lol
