Somerset / Robert Woodward 1768 Batheaston Somerset
« on: Saturday 21 November 15 14:21 GMT (UK)  »
HI, I am looking for information about a Robert Woodward born 1768 in Batheaston Somerset.  He died in 1829 and was buried there.  He married Hester (surname unknown) who was also from Batheasten born around 1770, she died and was buried in Batheaston 9 November 1845.
I am trying to find a marriage record for them.  Can anyone help?
Many thanks, Kiaya

Wiltshire / Re: FLOWER family from Melksham
« on: Friday 05 April 13 15:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi Jan,
Thanks for responding.  I have to admit that I have not looked at the Flowers in Corsham as, so far all mine seem to be in the Melksham - Semington - Steeple Ashtone and Littleton areas.  I know that there was another Flower family in Chitterne and Potterne but I am unable to make a connection with them.
I have got a copy of pages from a book called the 'Flowers of Wiltshire' which is now out of print which says the following:
Melksham Bradford, Chippenham and Corsham - Nonconformist families.
A family of barbers, some of whom were Quakers, may have originated in the ramifications of Nicholas and Christian's descendants (My ancestors form Melksham) William and Enoch emigrated to America in 1681 from Corsham; Abraham Lincoln's maternal descent has been traced to Thomas Flower the Barber of Melksham which has a baptismal entry in the parish register of Enoch, son of Thomas Flower the Barber in 1635.
A Corsham family appears in Quaker refisters and a series of nonconformist wills come from Corsham during the late 17th and 18th centuries.  This family appear to be connected  with Samuel of Chippenham, whose will was proved in 1795, as both he and Samuel of Corsham referred in their wills to relatives in Kingston St Michael.'
I have no idea if any of this makes sense to you or if you have heard of any of these names.
I am always eager to find out more about the family, so if you do find a connection I would love to know.

Regards, Sue

Wiltshire / Re: BAILEY Family from Holt
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 11:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Roy,
I am still trying to find my William Bailey, father of John Bailey born c 1630 who lived in Holt. There were two John Baileys in Holt at the same time and as the Parish records only show a baptism for a John Bailey but no other details I think this may have been the other John who I believe was the son of another John Bailey.  This second John married an Ann Earle and they had two children.
I suspect that our John and his father were incommers to Holt as there is no record of William there.
Any ideas?

Cumberland / Re: Agnes Macarthur born 1884 Cumberland
« on: Monday 11 February 13 13:08 GMT (UK)  »
Many thanks for clearing that up for me.  I have a very old family photograph of the Macarthur family taken around 1900.  In amongst the family is a young girl of about 20 who I believe to be a relative.  She has been identified as a niece named McGregor.  From this I have supposed her to be the daughter of my great grandfather George's twin brother John Macarthur who married a Catherine McGregor in 1881.  John died of TB in 1883 and I can find no further trace of Catherine who I believe was born around 1860.  John appears in the 1881 census in Govan, staying with his sister Margaret Toomie.  That census was taken on the night of 3 April and John married Catherine on the 29th.
I have checked the census records and found a possible Catherine who was 18 in 1881 and was a Domestic Dervant to a Peter McKellar and family in Govan.  I am wondering if this could be her and that perhaps they she and John had a daughter who appears in the photograph.
I would love to be able to find a record of Catherine after 1881 but have been unable to to find her using either Macarthur or McGregor.  John lived in Monkton and died there which is why I was trying to find a daughter's birth and the only one I could find was an Agnus, which is obviously wrong.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sue

Cumberland / Agnes Macarthur born 1884 Cumberland
« on: Monday 11 February 13 10:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to identify an Agnes Macarthur born in Cumberland in 1884.  I have two records, one my great aunt Agnes Macarthur daughter of George and Elizabeth born in that year but there was another registered in Whitehaven JFM 1884 10b 607.
I think she may have been my Agnes' cousin, possibly the daughter of John Macarthur and Catherine McGregor (Macarthur).  Can anyone help?

Many thanks Sue

Hello Frances,
Thanks you for replying.  I knew about the Crown pub because it states the publican on the website: www.fromeresearh.org.uk
under the heading 'property'  This has been a really good site and holds a lot of information about people in Frome + parish records.
I have tried to find out more about my 4 times great grandmother lucy's niece who married Charles Masson but have been unable to find out more about him.  Presumably he practiced in Frome?

Regards, Sue

Somerset / Sarah Woodman 1796 Standerwick
« on: Saturday 24 November 12 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out if the marriage record dated 17 January 1833 of a James Cox and Sarah Woodman at Bath St Michael is that of my great x 3 grandparents.
James came from Stratton on the Fosse but he was living in Bath in the 1850s onwards with wife Sarah (?) born 1796 in Standerwick Somerset.  I have searched the parish records in and around Frome, Beckington, Berkley (which was the ecclesiastical district of Standerwick in Somerset) to no avail.  I have even tried to find a baptism for Sarah Woodman in other churches in Bath. I have noticed that Woodman is a common name in Wiltshire and I wondered if she may have come from Dilton Marsh just over the border but I have no access to records there.
I would be very grateful for any help.

Sue
