Well ANZAC day today,110 years since the 1914 -18 War started  later this year.
We called upon our Empire- as it still was then- and my how they responded.
So few of their relatives would be able to travel to their graves,in those days.
That is really sad.
However the cemeteries are still beautifully kept and memorials maintained.

Then they did  it again in WW2.
Hope it is mentioned in The News.
These things should not be forgotten.

Well now there  is a call to stop having horses in the military, all because some spooked at a loud noise when a builder dropped some rubbish that made a very loud noise and several horses of The Household Cavalry spooked
as they were trotting past just as the rubbish crashed down.
Honestly!
They are magnificent and bring something special to the big parades etc.
There are more things that really need banning !!!

A dull damp day ,son is off to head office so I am doing his room which resembles a cross  between an untidy office and a garden shed/ workshop!

So dusters ,hot soapy water, long reach dusters for behind furniture I can’t move ,tools on the vac hose ,etc etc etc .

Need to phone the Dentist ,my mouth is so sire and the new little plate with a couple of teeth on it won’t  now go in !
So I am missing a tooth right at the front ,

Well I hope all are alright and especially those with health problems .

Well cleaned out my little pond today, filters etc
It was really dirty, but all pristine now with one of the little straw bundles to help prevent green water.
The fish look really good, bright colours two orange and a yellow, just goldfish.

Well Dentist yesterday ,extraction of the roots two crowns which were failing.
A new little plate with two teeth added , however I had such a job getting it out at home to swish  my mouth with salt water as per instructions , could not get it back in —- lots of injections to numb the root extractions and ut was all very painful after. My gum had really swollen - agony trying to get the new plate back in so I decided to leave it out, swish regularly and just wait but I look like The Hag of Ramsbottom, I will phone tomorrow to see what can be done .
All that cost £719 after five  £ 200+ visits !
Have an appointment on Monday - more money!
Oh dear in the words of Pam “Oi wish Oid looked aafter me teeth!” Ayers———
No an accident at school has a lot to answer for .
I’d be suing them nowadays!

A lovely sunny day but really cold .
Son and I went to the garden centre yesterday , to get my Mothering Sunday present which I wanted to wait for.
I got two big healthy Lavender plants .English,I don’t like  the French sort.

I need a heather ,one in a pot has died the other four are fine. None of the size I wanted.
Bluebells- well white bells all ou in my garden ,in the lane celandine  and
lovely bright dandelions. A big forget me not plant from seeds given me by a former  pupil who sadly lost her new born baby , a Society for Stillbirths and Neonatal deaths give the seeds to parents ,she gave me some.
What sadness.

Hope all are O.K.
Look after yourselves.

Lancashire / Re: Old Manchester Streets
« on: Wednesday 24 April 24 20:47 BST (UK)  »
There was a district in Manchester, we lived there - known as Newton .
That was our postal address.
It was between Miles Plating and Newton Heath .Bounded also by  Collyhurst and Bradford.
There is a Newton St ,off Great Ancoats St.The Post Office sorting office is there, going past Stevenson Square, parallel with Oldham St.
Oldham Road , a continuation of Oldham St ,name changes after crossing Great Ancoats St, led to Newton Heath , going through Ancoats,Miles Platting and Newton to Newton Heath.

The Medlock ran through Philip’s Park and Philip’s Park Cemetery, where it
was culverted for a distance and ran through Beswick to Ancoats to Chorleton on Medlock , which is near The University on Oxford Road.

Gosh, THREE moats , must have been desperate times!
The county ,and the date of the hall might give some clue as to why such strong defences.
There’s posh for you.!

My paternal great grandparents were married in St. Mary’s ,just off the Main Street ,Pride Hill ,Leading from the rail station up to the shops near the market hall.
Blakemore and Maddox ,in about 1850.
Can’t get to all my F.H stuff as my son is temporarily in the room where it is stored .No room to move!
They moved to Snailbeach where the lead mine was .

Do we need an ISBN number?
I hope it sells well. VIKTORIA.

Yes, each town or city has a Consul , often Belgian but always English speaking, also the Ambassador would be in Brussels .You might try The Seaman’s Mission, Antwerp,  there was one in Gent as it was an inland port .

Hope you have some success.

The Lighter Side / Re: Family Habits
« on: Tuesday 23 April 24 10:59 BST (UK)  »
Just as a by the by—- when living in Belgium we befriended an English lady ,
who had lived in Manchester, her large family home was opposite my second bus stop on my way to school.

She was the only English person in the town in West Flanders.
Attended the English Church in Gent.
When she died her in laws had to clear  over 60 years of hoarding ,they roped us in to help and from very old beautiful Victorian and Edwardian clothing we dressed a whole choir for “ The Good Old Days” concert we did for OXFAM.

She had bottled whole chickens and rabbits for  when the Germans invaded.
WW2 .
Still in the cellar in 1960’s/70’s ,looking like humunculi .!

She loved the radio and had every copy of Radio Times from its inception.
I told her in laws they might be valuable so left them to do as they wished.

A hoard of Victorian and Edwardian undies, all lace and Broderie Anglaise , we used those in the concert.
She was of the proportions of Queen Victoria and two of us got into one pair of her voluminous bloomers —- we had to go everywhere together mind you!
 :-X
Such amazing stories like diverting the spring water supply from their house when The German High Command requisitioned their home, to a supply not always pure———- she  said “ it was our little war effort” when we were somewhat  ,well , it was a crime of sorts, but she said “ Now listen to me,when you have seen your loyal employees put against your  factory wall and machine gunned , you feel you have to do something .
They commandeered our home and we lived in the garage ,seeing our belonging desecrated and the towns folk murdered.”
 :-X
I brought the clothes to England ,used in many Ladies’Group talks and eventually went to Shropshire  Air Ambulance ,volunteers gave talks in many places for funds using the clothes.
Very popular,in Village Halls and one speaker from the hamlet where I had lived  would be asked “ When are you bringing them thur big knickers agin?”

Cheerio, Viktoria.

Oooer, and my  calendar  has 23 rd.as St. George’s Day.

My sister is 90 today, probably  still wearing jeans and a big  hair do, she still looked very good the last time I saw her which was pre Covid.
Since when she has lost her son but refuses to let it affect her life.
Everyone copes in their own way.

We are going on May 4 th —— Royal Command!
I am told it will be lovely —-
I have all the presents for the Christmases we have not been , 2019 was the last one so 20,21,22,23, all piled up. Books mostly .
She sends me the History magazine each month .
I feel I ought to phone her but she will say it is just another day and I will feel stupid for, phoning but it seems wrong to ignore it.
I did send a small handmade card,no words just mine saying “ Have a lovely Day .”

Well shopping to do so off with my trusty trolley before my son comes round to “help” - he us well meaning but it doesn’t work out like that ,I plan my journey and shopping to suit me and the buses etc.
I always have to rush when he takes me ,so I prefer to sneak out and take my time, have a chat etc.

We are all different.
Cheerio .hope you all have a nice weekend and those not well especially.
Viktoria.

Blackcurrant tea— hot water with a couple of spoons of home made blackcurrant jam dissolved in it —- magic cure .
An Aspirin dissolved in warm water used as a gargle really gets to the pain in throat infections ,no need to swallow it .

A boiled onion ,still hot in a clean cloth on an abscess seems to
“ draw “ out the awful gunge and hence hastens the healing.

Old fashioned remedies ,cost nothing and did the trick very often.
Pre NHS we had nothing else.

Salty water is a good cleanser for wounds .
Clove oil for toothache.
