South Africa / Farrell Family 1883-1890 Kimberley Diamond Mines
« on: Thursday 12 October 06 19:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I need help as I have come to a brick wall. Great Grandfather Thomas William FARRELL (b.1852 in Ontario Ca) married in 1883 in Kimberley Diamond Mines, South Africa great grandmother Flora Constance Mary WILSON (b.1867 Ascension Island - she was a British Subject as her father gggrandfather Henry Morton Dyer WILSON was paymaster for the Royal Navy - the guard ship on Ascension Island was HMS Flora - hence her name!) They lived in South Africa from 1883 until 1891 when they returned to the UK and lived in Devonshire. Thomas William FARRELL (who described himself as a mining expert in the 1891 census) then went  back to South Africa and was never heard of since........or so the story goes....how can I find out more???????....many thanks.

Dear Hastingswoman,
Thank you so much for all the information...much of which I didn't have, as I had only done the Mark FOOKS connection. We have the marriage certificate of Mark FOOKS and Evelinda in December 1862 of which I can give you details if interested plus his obituary. Martin is now endeavouring to get a photo of the portraits but I should warn you that his brother-in-law who is Austrian and lives in Saltzburg has been depressed since his wife's death. We hope for the best.
In the meantime thanks very much and happy hunting to you too.

Thank you very much. Just as a matter of interest: Mary Ann went on to marry a John Hodder NEEDELL from Dorset. She became a novelist and wrote sometimes under her maiden name and sometimes her married name. She was once reviewed by Gladstone. Most of her stories are drawn from her experiences in London.

Hi
Charles WOMERSLEY was my husband's great great great grandfather.  It was not a photo - it was a portrait. According to my husband it passed to his sister who died in Austria in 2003 and is presumably with one of her children. He remembers it from his youth. It was always hung above a similar portrait of  a woman my husband assumed to be his wife. (Although it could have been another relation he thinks was named Caroline.)

His daughter, Evelinda Voyce WOMERSLEY married in 1862 Mark FOOKS and this is the line that my husband is descended from.

Thanks for your help - am looking forward to hearing from you.

My research on WOMERSLEY rather died a death because other family branches seemed to take precedence for one reason or another. What information do you have - I would be very interested. His daughter Evelinda Voyce WOMERSLEY b. 1834 married a MarK FOOKS b.1834 in 1862. They both died in 1917.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
