Hi Shevy,
The Scotsman Newspaper Archive online (July 22nd 1881) states:-
"2 platelayers killed on the railway near Berwick - Yesterday afternoon, about 2 o'clock 2 platelayers named David Small and Steven Smith were killed on the railway at Loanend cutting about 2 or 3 miles from Berwick. It appears that in order to evade an up goods train they had stepped on the down line just as an engine was returning to Berwick which they had not observed, and which knocked them down and killed them on the spot. Another platelayer named Brown is so severely injured that he is not expected to recover."
