Ancestry has a marriage for Mary Anne Graybanks and Thomas Edwards on 15 July 1889 at Ironbridge Shropshire. Her father is given as John Graybanks.  She is aged 19

Chris

This is it, I am sure. Thanks everyone and little Thomas has siblings too.

He married Violet Holland in 1919.

What did he put for his status ie bachelor or widowed?  Or was that the son - I was thinking the father.

I haven't got the marriage certificate yet.

Family sources say he was Welsh from the Rhondda but he was definitely born in Wolverhampton. He married Violet Holland in 1919.

Were either of them previously married?

Not as far as I can see.

Who is little Thomas with on the 1901 census?

What is the exact wording for the mother on his birth certificate?

Mary Ann Edwards formerly Greybank

I haven't got Thomas Robert in 1901. I have him in 1939 with his date of birth which matches the birth certificate I have just ordered.

Is it possible for somebody to look at the original photo of the Scottish Soldier?
The back of the photo may give the Studio location - Malta or elsewhere?

Unfortunately this isn't possible. The location of the original photograph is unknown, if it still exists at all. All I have is a well worn photocopy.

If the photograph is a Victorian soldier it could be Paolo's father, Antonio. His dates are 1858-1906. There is a family resemblence. However this is purely speculation.

He is also carrying a pace stick. Isn't this associated with someone older and of a higher rank?

It's not a pace stick, it's a swagger stick. Quite a common prop in photographic studios which specialised in military portraiture in the last quarter of the nineteenth cenury and first quarter of the twentieth.
A pace stick is much more substantial and consists of two hinged legs which can be opened out to 30 or 32 inches at the tips and is used to literally measure a pace or single step when marching. (picture here: https://dancraft.co.uk/

Thank you for clarifying.

Thank you all for your help so far.

His grandsons still do think both pictures are of their grandfather. To me, in the picture with the lorry he looks around 18-20 years old which fits with someone in WW1 who was born in 1898.

In the picture of him in the Scottish uniform he looks to be 14-15 years old, a lot younger, possibly too young to be in the Army. Tonepad has already said the tassels aren't correct in that the number is unusual. He is also carrying a pace stick. Isn't this associated with someone older and of a higher rank?

So I am wondering if this is a red herring and it is a costume not a uniform. Carnival in Malta has been massive for hundreds of years and there is a lot of dressing up. Before we all had cameras and  mobiles people used to go to studios to be photographed in their costumes and this looks like it could be a studio photograph. Wonder if this is a possibility? The Highlanders were in Malta after the Boer War so that would explain why the uniform was here.  ???

I have got the boys searching for medals now so if they are still in the family I will be able to confirm the service number.

Yes of course. Sorry. The medals you referenced are WW1.

He was born in Msida, Malta. His father was Anthony.  As far as I know he never left Malta but information about him is scarce.
