Interesting when Colin says that he was brought up in Bury - I presume he means Bury Saint Edmunds  rather than the real BURY in Lancashire

That is very kind of you and much appreciated - the George Scarff that was the focus of my enquiry moved away from the area however his parents or grandparents could well be buried there:-

George Scarff 1817 -1897 Susannah Scarff 1819 -  ????

George Scarff 1786 - ????       Judith  Scarff 1780 - ????

Present family circumstances mean that I am relatively inactive on genealogy at the moment, however it would appear that George and Mary Jane who were my great grandparents on my mothers side are the same ones that you are researching.The postings from diddymiller and Annette 7 are relevant as my copy of the birth certificate for George Scarff born 19/01/1845 lists parents as George and Susana (maiden name not listed)

Thank you I did not have the maiden name for Mary Jane

the family appear in the 1861 UK census - head of family Anthony dies in 1867 - can't trace any members of the family in the 1871 census - did mother Sarah take them back to Ireland - although back here for 1881 and 1901 census, can't trace any  members in the 1891 UK census

Once again, thank you both.My genealogy subscription does not cover the 1911 census,however I will buy some time and see if that gives me any more clues.I was not aware that there may be greater detail in the 1911 census.

Did any of the children born in Ireland live in England at the time of the 1911 census? You should really follow the whole family through all the census records but the 1911 census seems to be particularly good at mentioning a more exact birthplace (no guarantees of course but certainly worth a try). We aren't allowed to ask for 1911 census lookups here due to terms and conditions but there's a thread for search hints here-

Thank you both - the "Ossary " connection came via a fellow researcher - my own attempts at further research have made me aware that Ossary is a diocese but I can't narrow it down any further to a parish - they and their children,Joseph,Ann,Anthony,Kerzia,Eliza and Isabella all born in Ireland apparently emigrated to Liverpool in the 1850's,as they first appear in the 1861 census
