Cumberland / Re: Carlisle orphanage?
« on: Sunday 25 September 05 14:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi
The famous biscuit factory still exists now "McVitties" but was owned by the equally famous "Carr",  family who owned a large part of Carlisle, and probably still do.  Has to be loads of history in that family.
With  regards the orphanage I am sure there were several or more in those days. But again one the famous/infamous was what is now the Austain Friars school, I believe back in the good old days it was run by nuns and priests who were quite cruel to the kids and used to ship them off to different parts of the world. The impressive four story building still exists on the top of a hill at St Anne's Carlisle.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Crawford Lookup 1871
« on: Tuesday 20 September 05 12:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have traced the Crawford Family back to Workington Cumberland in the 1881 census.  My current research from the 1881 census indicates John crawford (aged 63) of Uldale Street, Workington and his wife Ann (aged 55).

Therefore best guess at dates of birth are 1818(John) and 1826(Ann) they give there origins as Irish, hence I am stuck, can anyone help, please, particularly with there origins.

I know they had at least four children, so their marriage (which I have to assume is in Ireland) had to be prior to 1859.

There has to be a lot more children out there, but the four I have located so far are Thomas 1859 Irish origin; Mary1861 and Maggie 1861(both of Irish origin), and James 1864.

In the 1881 census it implies James was born in west cumberland, but I have virtually proved this to be incorrect.  Some people have implied it could be West Meath in Ireland.  But at present I have hit a brick wall.  ???

I would appreciate any help with any or all of the above.

Hi Slainte
I am researching my crawford ancestors but am at a brick wall with Irish origins. Jane and Mary appear quite regularly as family names.  Was hoping that there may be some connection with a john Crawford born ireland around 1818 and married Ann( born around 1826) look forward to hearing from you

Hi Megan
I am new to rootschat but am hoping your kind offer will help. I have traced a great aunt to Ellis Island in 1909.   Jane Crawford, a cook, aged 24, Born Workington Cumbria about Jan/Feb/Mar 1885,  parents Irish, Last address, 61,Snowden street Middlesbrough: She arrived NewYork 20th November 1909, she gave no forwarding address other than final destination "Greenwich". She did not have any relatives or friends that we know of in America. However we do know that she married a William Hutchinson sometime after1909 and before 1926 when she returned for a short visit Middlesbrough, we believe she may have had 3 children, Charles, William, Anne. and that she possibly had a connection with 6920 South Anthony Avenue. Chicago some forty plus years ago.and there the trail ends. Mike. C
