Can anyone advise in which newspaper would local news for Stockton and surrounding areas have been reported in 1900 to 1920 period.
Trying to narrow down looking for news of family in this area at this time.
Where is the best way of starting such searches. I have not really used newspaper searches before.
Many thanks

Durham / Spanish Flu in Stockton on Tees 1918
« on: Sunday 09 April 23 20:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi, hoping someone may be able to pint me in the right direction.
My GGrandmother, Ethel Teresa Bainbridge (née Jamieson of Viewly Hill Farm) died of the Spanish Flu in Nov/Dec 1918 aged 38 leaving two young children behind. Their father had died some years earlier. Would there likely be any hospital records from this time or any newspaper articles from the time about those who died. Any written history of the pandemic and how it affected those in Stockton and surrounding areas. Many thanks for reading.

The Common Room / Re: Adoption rules in 1918

Thanks everyone. Both children were taken in by the grandmother and a widowed aunt, they were listed as grandchild on the census in 1921. As Maiden Stone says, by grandmother was already 15 and went to work at this time.
The reason for asking and mystery was that my GGrandmother married again 4 years before she died in the flu epidemic and changed her name but neither child did. The husband was 8 years younger than her, still only in his late 20’s. I wondered if this was a marriage of convenience to protect her as a widow or him if he was gay or going off to war (married in early 1914 - so probably not). When she died the children went to live with the two older ladies and not their adopted stepfather.
The mystery is I knew my grandmother really well and often talked about her family history. She was happy to tell me her father died from being an alcoholic in 1911 but not that she had a step dad - I never knew of his extistance until long after she died. Just find it all very strange and would love to delve a bit deeper. My grandmother was born only 5 months after her parents married. Her mother was the domestic help in the family house of my Ggrandfathers family who were very wealthy. He was much older than her. Lots of scandals for the time.

The Common Room / Adoption rules in 1918

My GGrandmother died in the flu epidemic in 1918, my GGrandad had died 7 years earlier. She left 2 children aged 15 and 13 who went to live with relatives on her side of the family. My question is - would there be a necessity for the children to be formally adopted by the family or not. Any perspective on this period of time for orphan children would be very much appreciated.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Death of ancestor on ship "Andes"
« on: Monday 22 June 20 02:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi, hopefully someone might be able to point me in the right direction with this query.
I have an ancestor who I believe died whilst working on steam ship or Royal mail liner SS or RMS "Andes". I can find his record under Find My Past - British Armed Forces and overseas deaths files but I would like to find out how he died.
I have a probate record for him as having died at the Royal South Hants Hospital on 1 July 1960.
Charles Fred(erick) Biddiscombe born 1900. He was a butcher on board and won the British Empire Medal in the June of this same year so I don't know if these two events are linked.
Has anyone used the Royal South Hants Hospital records at Southampton archives and do they contain details of cause of death? Can anyone suggest where to go online look through Southampton news papers of the time. I live in New Zealand so cannot go into the archives in person.
I appreciate I could order death cert but is there any other place to find such information?
Many thanks

Hi, I have found a probate record now for Charles Frederick and it says he died at Royal South Hants Hospital on 1 July 1960. I will post in the Hants forum and see if I can get any joy there. Thanks for all the advice and help.
