Other Countries / Re: SERVANT family of Bequia and Carriacou
« on: Saturday 09 May 20 23:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi Goobs
I too am chasing this family, making headway slowly.
I am descended from his daughter Alzire, born on Carriacou ~1776.

Hi again
FreeBMD have a Death Sep 1837 for Cross Harriet Johnstone Marylebone    1 180.
I do not know what happened to Mary.
I don't have a death for Ann either.
And I know that Eliza md a Merryweather, but do not know his given name(s), nor any children. Do you have them please?
Sophia & Mary, both children of John & Elizabeth, were alive in 1871 census, but I do don't know about them after that.
So sorry, I have little that is helpful! Sounds like you have searched pretty well.
Cheers,
jo

Hi Sivam

It is now over 4 years since you wrote. I hope you are still connected/watching here.

Ann Cross is also a 2xg g-mother of my husband. However, while I am interested in your question, I cannot answer your question about Sarah's surname. Nor do I know where she, or husband John, was from.

I think Mary (bn 1822), Ann (1824), Eliza (1829) and Harriett Johnstone (1831) were all from John's first marriage. There are some gaps though I suspect there were others who maybe did not survive. I do wonder if the name Johnstone is a clue.

John's second marriage in 1835 to Elizabeth Seymour had at least another 4 children.

Have you seen Lynley's website at

??

cheers,

Essex / Re: Cumbers & other family links

You note a marriage of Thomas KING & Susannah RICHARDSON in 1818 at St Pancras.

Thomas is in the 1851 census as born in Essex c. 1770, & Susannah as b. c 1786, though her christening was 1780 in Coombe, Oxfordshire.

These are my 3x great grand-parents. If there is a link to a Crummer family it would have to be Thomas' mother or grandmothers.

Perhaps that helps eliminate some of your options?

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: MARSHALL in Loughborough 1820-1850

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

David - this felllow must be the WW Marshall & Hannah I had heard of.  I am interested in hearing if you can make out the name (or otherwise know) who the third child is in the family - various versions have offerred Joshua, John & James  - but I wonder if you think if might be Jas.Wm.? Do you have links with that family? The painter you found doesn't quite fit with what we hade from his mother-in-laws' letters when he first arrived in NZ, so I doubt, though cannot of course yet exclude that as a possibility.

Trish - doh! I have so searched for his family for years, and have copies of BDM certificates for almost all my other ancestors including his wife Jane. But  I have not done that for him, thanks for the prompt. :-[ Will do, however I doubt it will offer anything much in this instance - our civil death certificates did not include names of parents until late 1875 & he died in 1873.

Diddy - many thanks for your kind offer. I did go through the parish christening films of about 12 parishes in the Leicester records office, but didn't really see much more than online searches.  Having said that, I don't know his church - once married, he allowed his wife to attend CofE, but he was not much of a churchman himself.

Thank you all,
jo

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / MARSHALL in Loughborough 1820-1850
« on: Saturday 12 February 11 05:16 GMT (UK)  »
My James William MARSHALL died here in New Zealand in Jan 1873, aged 49. He was described as from Loughborough, but I cannot find his family or his birth c 1822. We believe, but cannot prove, that his father was William, mother Mary Ann, & that in 1855 he had 2 brothers & a sister.

He arrived in 1852 & married in 1855, so he won't be in any census later than 1851.

In the 1851 UK census there is a JWM, ?home/flour agent, lodging in North Street, Barrow Upon Soar, and born about 1823 in Loughborough.

And in the 1841 census there is a family William (40, agent) & Hannah with 3 sons & a daughter that could be his family, in Derby Road, Loughborough.

James worked as an agent in NZ, so the 1841 entry seems possible even though the mother's name does not match. Of course, given the gap in age of children, the father may have married again.

I've searched for this birth at Leicester records office, IGI, Ancestry, Leicester Directory, & Find My Past, and various online resources. I've read the postings here re RAWSON & MARSHALL & though they are very interesting, I can't fit them in.

Any suggestions for the births of him, possible siblings Thomas, Joseph or Jane, or his parents' marriage?  Or deaths of the parents?

Many thanks
