Argyllshire / Re: 1841 Census look up Kilchoman Islay
« on: Friday 02 September 11 23:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi Sheila,
Very interesting. We do need to collaborate as my wife's 3 times great grandparents were Duncan McNeil and Margaret Young. I think you can widen the family tree as if I'm correct you are introducing a sibling to Duncan McNeil.
I have already found difficulties with the family through variations of Donald and Daniel which may have been Dougald!
Donald McNeil and Catherine "Shaw". - We have Duncan McNeil died 21/8/1871 at 12 Old Row, Wishaw aged 85 years widower of Margaret Young. His parents are listed on death cert as Duncan McNeil, farmer, deceased and Catherine maiden surname not recorded and registered by son Daniel McNeil who made his mark.
Death Certificate 628/00 0225 Cambusnethan.
Moving to Duncan McNeil/Margaret Young children I concur with your listing although I would have Donald born 1818 and christened 7/6/1818 at Cambusnethan with the forename of Donald or Daniel or maybe Dougall!
Donald married Margaret Robertson.
In 1851 census he was Daniel.
In 1855 birth of son Malcolm 23/9/1855 628/00 0332 he is Donald.
In 1861 and 1871 Census he was Daniel.
In 1875 marriage of daughter Mary to John McBride 628/00 0014 he is Daniel.
There are more examples of the use of Daniel.
However on 1/9/1891 Donald McNeil, coal miner, widower of Margaret Robertson died and his parents are recorded on 628/000270 Cambusnethan as Duncan McNeil and Margaret Young.
Interesting, maybe he liked confusing authority!
Reference the sons William McNeil - I have come up agin a brickwall on him or them. I have William McNeil born 23/3/1823 ch 30/3/1823 both dates Kilchoman, Islay and a second William born 8/8/1824 and ch 15/8/1824 also Kilchoman. There is no supportive documentation for either William in Islay. Mystery to be solved.
I think that goes some way towards answering your points. We are back a fair distance in time and ability to read and write must be a factor as would an Argyllshire island accent and maybe a Gaelic influence.
I am interested to find out more about the siblings of Duncan and more on Catherine Shaw.
Regards
Max

Northumberland / Re: Elizabeth Begg/Robert Elliott Family
« on: Monday 04 April 11 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Matilda,
I have put the claymore and shield back in the armoury! I agree there are pros and cons for both systems.

Going back to my original message and your response I have put the marriage cert (index 10b 583) in the pending tray.
I'm not sure at this point  whether I need Robert Elliott's parents names.
I have Elizabeth's parents, through to greatgrandparents et all.
My need is guidance or information on what happened to the three daughters listed in 1891 census but not in the 1901 census?
From the Northumberland Cert site I have established that there are no deaths for Margaret Begg but 3 deaths for Margaret Elliott, 7 deaths for Jane Elliott and 14 deaths for Elizabeth Elliott all in the period 1891 to 1901. Are any of them Elizabeth and Robert Elliott children?

Regards
Max

Hi Matilda,
Thanks for your speedy reply. The Stan Mapstone link to Northumberland certificates is very useful. Much clearer than Free BDM however I did find that it was weak on births.
I'm accustomed to using ScotlandsPeople online certificate service which gives a copy of a birth, death, marriage and census 1841 to 1901 at a modest price of 6 credits which equates to 1.20 pounds sterling.
Is their something similar for England?
One can obtain from the Scottish Registrars a duplicate official certificate at some £14/15 which is too expensive and unnecessary for the ordinary genealogist.

Northumberland / Elizabeth Begg/Robert Elliott Family
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 15:58 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking assistance with the family of Elizabeth Begg and Robert Elliott.
Elizabeth Begg born 1866 in Glasgow and Robert Elliott born 1863 in Spittal. They were married 1887 in Berwick County possibly Tweedmouth.

In 1891 census they are living in Tweedmouth and have three daughters - Margaret Begg 6yrs, Jane Elliott 3yrs and Elizabeth Elliott 4mths.

In 1901 Census they are living at Morpeth but with one daughter Ann Elliott 8yrs
In 1911 this trio are living at 1 Stanley Cottages, Morpeth.

Any help in filling in the blanks would be very much appreciated.

Caithness / Begg family Gills Caithness
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 22:11 GMT (UK)  »
There are a sizeable number of individuals with the surname "Begg" in the Gills, Upper Gills, Warse and Canisbay area. Are they related?
John Begg was a miller in Gills from 1841 census. He married Margaret Moodie from Dunnet in 1780. Their son Alexander was a miller in Auckengill, Freswick.
Canisbay Parish seems to be a sparsely populated area and I think that would be the case in early 1800's?
Any comments and information would be most welcome as I search for my maternal ancestors.

Hi All,
Please accept my gratefull thanks for all your assistance.
I have contact with members of the New Zealand family of my uncle Alexander Reid Caldwell.
My original enquiry on John Caldwell will need more thought as my new family has no knowledge of him.
Keep up the good work and allthe best for 2011.
Kind regards
