World War Two / Did Ivor Brazier, Racehorse Trainer, serve during the War?
« on: Monday 08 April 19 19:46 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

You might be able to assist.

Did Ivor Brazier (1912 - 85) serve in the armed forces during the Second World War?  I can find no record on ancestry for him.

He was a race horse trainer and his family were breeders.  Noting that racing was one of the only 'sports' to be allowed to continue during the war, perhaps, his occupation was that of a 'reserved occupation'?

Best wishes,

Essex / The Brazier Family - Horse Racing and Breeding
« on: Friday 22 March 19 20:25 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

I hope you are well.

I should be grateful for any information pertaining to the Brazier Family of Loughton, Essex, who were involved in horse racing and breeding from the c.1930s.

I am particularly interested in Ivor Brazier (1912 - 85), son of George Thomas Brazier and Mary Ann Brazier, neé Buss.

Best wishes,

Cambridgeshire / Ivor Mills - Racing or Horse breeding (WW2 period)
« on: Tuesday 12 June 18 13:10 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon,

I am after information on a Mr Ivor Mills.  He was supposedly from the Cambridge area and was supposedly (or his family ) engaged in horse racing or horse breeding during the Second World War (perhaps even as early as the 30s and as late as the 50s and 60s).

I would expect this gentleman to be in his mid-late twenties (maybe early thirties) towards the end of the War.  So we are looking for a gentleman born in c.1920 who during the War (early 40s) resided in the Cambridge area, on first glance there aren't that many 'Ivor Mills' born around this period, or earlier.

The clue to finding this gentleman would be to review those of his name (Ivor Mills) living in the Cambridge area during this time.  There shouldn't be many!

Perhaps there was a Mills family who were involved in the horse trade during this time in the aforementioned area?

I'd be grateful if somebody could assist with this query.

Best wishes,
GS

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Matthew Sykes (c.1656-1702)
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 18:40 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I hope you are well.

Matthew Sykes, a farmer of West Bretton, married Anne Rhodes at Darton, near Barnsley, on Thursday, 13th August 1676.  He was buried on Sunday, 29th January 1702, intestate.  An administration of his estate was granted to his wife, Anne.  His date of birth is unknown, but should be about the year 1656.  They had issue:

1.   Sarah Sykes was christened on 21 July 1677 in Sandal.  She was buried there          on 10 August.
2.   Martha Sykes was christened on 2 February 1678 in Sandal.
3.   William Sykes (1687 – 1729)
4.   Sarah Sykes was christened on 3 July 1690 in Sandal.
5.   Mary Sykes was christened on 20 April 1693 in Sandal.
6.   George Sykes was christened 12 March 1695 in Sandal.

I'd be grateful if somebody could assist with finding the birth of Matthew Sykes please.  I am trying to search this family further back.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Best wishes,
Jonathan

World War Two / Claybury Hospital (Nurse accommodation) - WW2
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 23:01 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

Claybury Hospital, Woodford Bridge, Essex, was used for nurse accommodation during the War.  A relation of mine is listed as residing there for that purpose, but I do not know when, there is no date, only an address.

It would be between 1939 - 42, and perhaps again, from 1943 - 45.

Does anyone have any further information about Claybury during the War (not its mental asylum context)?

Best wishes,
GS

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Witness to marriage?
« on: Wednesday 28 March 18 19:29 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I cannot seem to decipher the surname of one of the witnesses.  Is it Doris Bains?  If so, the 'n' seems to be missing.  This certificate is from a marriage in 1939 in Rossington, Doncaster.

Best wishes,
GS

World War Two / WW2 Service Record - Duke of Wellington's Regiment / Home Guard
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

I have recently acquired a Second World War service record, and there are various abbreviations which I am unaware of, and I wonder, therefore, whether somebody could shed some light on them.

This gentleman was on the 'Y' list on 25.3.41 and again on 13.2.42.  What is the 'Y' list?  I read that this may relate to hospitalisation.

He was posted to the '5th H B' on 14.3.40, and subsequently posted to the '50th H Bri' on 8.6.40.  What are these abbreviations?  Are they the '5th Home Battalion/Brigade' and '50th Home Brigade' respectively?

The gentleman concerned was on the Home Station from 15.11.39 - 24.2.43.  He enlisted on 15.11.39 into the 1st Battalion, Duke of Wellington's Regiment.  At various points he was at an 'ITC', Infantry Training Centre.  Were there specific centres attributed to the DWR?

On 19.3.42, he was with the '10th'.  Was this the '10th Battalion, DWR' (I believe there was no such thing), or does this relate to the '10th home battalion' or '10th home brigade'.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Jonathan

Family History Beginners Board / Matthew Sykes - a mystery
« on: Tuesday 01 August 17 19:23 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

Matthew Sykes, a farmer of West Bretton, Yorkshire, married Anne Rhodes on 13 August 1676 at Darton, and passed away in 1702 at Sandal Magna, Wakefield.  His children were all born at Sandal.  Oddly enough, I can't seem to find his date of birth, or in fact, his place of birth.

I would very much appreciate your help with this mysterious search.  Perhaps he came from Leeds and settled in Wakefield, as many of the Sykeses originated from Leeds and ventured off in the 16th to 17th centuries.

Best wishes,
GS
