Anglesey / Richard Griffith buried 1820 at St. Cybi's Church, Holyhead
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 11:45 BST (UK)  »
My ggg-grandfather, Richard Griffith (1752-1820), the father of Richard Griffith of the 'Valuations' of Ireland fame, lived in Millicent, Co. Kildare, but around 1815 he became the Irish Packets Agent and Postmaster for the General Post Office at Holyhead, Anglesey.  He died in 1820 at Holyhead and was buried at St. Cybi's.  i would be very grateful if anyone who is local, or planning to visit St. Cybi's Church, could see if they can find his grave and transcribe the inscription.

Dublin / Any idea how I can find Dublin solicitors in the C18th?
« on: Wednesday 21 March 12 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone know of any listings of Dublin solicitors in latter half of 18th century and first couple of decades of 19th century?

Interest is the origins of WG Bradley and sons solicitors founded in 1780?  There is a long line of William Bradley's from my great uncle and great grandfather in the eaarly 20th century back, but I get stuck at William James Bradley, solicitor, born Dublin 1794.

Kent / Spratt family - Wingham, Ash-next-Sandwich - Woonesborough
« on: Saturday 30 January 10 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
Dear All,

I have a lot of information about this Spratt family, which I am happy to share, but also some gaps that I would love to fill in.  The earliest family were in Wingham, then Ash and then Woodnesborough.

Names of spouses of my direct Spratt line going back in time, are Jeffreys, Foad, Langley, Wanstall, Maytum, Warde, Shoveler, Powell, Cobb.

I have a number of problems:  EG, I cannot find the marriage record of Solomon Spratt and Anne Shoveler. A LDS entry says Solomon married Ann Shovelor in Bishopsbourne (about 10 miles from Wingham) in June 1750.  It says she was born on 6 March 1733. There is however a settlement order for Solomon and Anne from Littlebourne to Wingham - the marriage may therefore well have been in Littlebourne rather than Bishopsbourne.  However, I could not find the marriage in either set of Parish records.  The marriage date of June 1750 is consistent as their first child was baptised in June 1751.

There is also a second closely related Solomon Spratt (a cooper) who apparently married Sarah Evernden in Jun 1751 at Ickham (near Ash) - this comes from a transcript of Canterbury Marriage Records and also an entry at the LDS site.  The marriage date is consistent with the date of birth of their first child in Wingham Parish records (1752).  He is probably the Solomon Spratt buried in Wingham Churchyard alongside a second tomb for Sarah Spratt and their infant daughter Anne.  I have been unable to find their marriage in church records of Ickham and surrounding churches.

It is very hard to disentangle these two Solomon Spratts as I have not found either of their marriage certificates and I have suspicions about the transcription of the dates in secondary sources including the tomb inscriptions, which now are very hard to read.  Bsically the dates of births, mariages, deaths etc don't tally and I am confused.

Anyone interested in this family?

Yours Tompion

Dublin / William Gordon Bradley and co, Dublin solicitors
« on: Wednesday 06 January 10 10:33 GMT (UK)  »
Interested in the Bradley family of Dublin who for 200 years were solicitors in Dublin.  Their firm of solicitors, founded by William Gordon Bradley in 1780, still exists in Dublin as WG Bradley and Co., although my great uncle was the last Bradley to work for the family firm.

The line of solicitors ends with my great uncle (William) Gordon Bradley (1884-1946 married Constance marguerite Inmand and then Malcolm Frazer), whose father (my great grandfather) was William David Bradley (1847-1897, married Mary Anne Isabella Halpin of Cavan) and grandfather (probably) was William George Bradley (married Charlotte Trotter). There was also Arthur Evelyn Bradley (born about 1865) who was president of the Irish Law Society in 1914/1915 who I suspect was a cousin.

Very interested to hear if anyone has information about these Bradleys.
