Lancashire / Old Manchester Streets

Can anyone tell me where 'Great Newton Street' was in 1806 and am I correct in thinking that 'Newton Lane' in late 1700's was the now Oldham Rd?

In the Burial Registers for the above church, certainly in 1820/30's, most entries have a numerical annotation at the end of the entry eg 1/453. Does anyone know for certain if they are Grave numbers?

Hopefully, I've attached part of an entry with the numbers circled.

Donegal / Tuam
« on: Saturday 18 November 23 13:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I've come across some Army Records from 1814 which show a soldier as being born in Tuam, Donegal/Co. Donegal about 1795/96. However, when I searched for Tuam it comes up as being in Co. Galway.

Can anyone throw any light on this for me please.

Thanks, Eric.

Lanarkshire / 1851 Census
« on: Monday 30 October 23 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have a transcript of the 1851 Census for Sarah Finlay, born c 1795 Ireland, living at 28 South Coburg St, Gorbals.
On it she is shown as Wife. Is it possible for someone to check the actual image to see if her husband James is also shown, on the off chance the family has been wrongly listed. He seems to have disappeared in 1851, although there may be a very outside chance he was at sea.

Many thanks. Eric.

Apologies if I'm preaching to the converted, but I've just noticed that some records are available as a  JPEG Digital Image.

I've only just noticed it today, when I went on the GRO site. Maybe it's been mentioned already and I've missed it.

Seemingly only available for some images and costs 2.50 a go.

Staffordshire / Newchapel

In the Baptism Registers for St James, Newchapel, 1750/1780's, there is a 'column' on the right of the page, which I assume denotes where the family was living. I say this as some of those I have looked at lived in Brerehurst and there is 'BRE' in that column. Some have what looks like STAD. Does anybody have an idea where that might denote? My money is on Stadmarslow, on account of it being in the vicinity.

Thanks, Eric

Lancashire / Liverpool June 1886
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 10:46 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor (Isaac Harvey) who lived in Manchester, who suffered a sudden death in Liverpool on Saturday 19 June 1886. Is anyone able to access local Newspapers of that weekend to see if there was a special event held in Liverpool at the time.

I'm curious as to what he was doing in Liverpool that weekend. I suspect he may have been on a social visit, as he appears to have been accompanied by a local Publican. So far, I'm not aware of any family in the area that he may have been visiting...but you never say never.

Thanks, Eric

United States of America / Marriage

I know Marriage laws vary from State to State and some can be quite complex, but briefly, are there/were there any restrictions on a man marrying his deceased wife's Sister, particularly in Ohio?

Regards Eric.

An entry in the Admissions Book for the above states "Father a Clerk in the House".
Can I assume from this that his occupation was a Clerk and that he was in The Workhouse? Or does somebody know different.

Also, the entry states "Belonging to Manchester No. 3", which I assume is the Parish/Poor Law Union that was/is responsible for the child. Does anyone know the actual area it refers to?

Regards, Eric.
