The Common Room / Struggling to trace someone going backwards
« on: Thursday 20 March 14 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
Just a quick question......

If there is someone you are pretty sure is an ancestor, but can't trace him going backwards, how would you go about finding said ancestor's descendants if he was never married?

Thanks in advance  :)

World War One / Can anyone help please?
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 13:03 GMT (UK)  »
Just wondering if someone could help please. I'm trying to help a relative of my husband.

I'm looking for information on James Wilkie Clement, born 27 March 1893 (in Glasgow we think).  He didn't join up till 1917 (when he would have been 24) and was sent to Ireland "to fight the Black and Tans" - but the Black and Tans were the British Army, and didn't come into being till after WW1.
I will attach two photos. You will see there is a fairly big age discrepancy between the 2 attached photos. Does anyone know which Regiments they are?  The older one with the moustache, is dated Feb. 1918, and was taken in Newbridge, co. Kildare, Ireland.
I've been told that he joined the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry, but have had no luck in tracing him that way.

Thank you.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 04 January 12 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
hello,

can anyone help?

I'd like some information or points in the right direction on how to find the following information.

Apparently, my gt grandparents had around 13 children. One of my grandfather's brother (who was a lot younger than him ).

I have been told that he died at the age of 19. I have been told that he was riding on a motorbike. This would have been around 1961 in Surrey.

Could anyone help me find any newspaper or stories on this please?

Thanks.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

was just wondering if anyone from the area or anyone who knows the area, knows much about the farms in the area around 1881.

My x3 gt grandfather is showing as a farmer of 18 acres, in the 1881 census. That is all i know. Would be nice to find more out about the farms around that time or find pictures of where my family lived.
I don't know anything about the area and any information or a point in the right direction would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks  :)

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / COMPLETED Sir Christopher Wren School
« on: Monday 14 November 11 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I was speaking to my dad the other day and he mentioned that he would love to find more info on his grandmother on his mother's side.
He mentioned that she had gone to Christopher Wren School, I don't know anything about it and can't seem to find anything on it either.

My gt grandmother was called Jessie Elizabeth Prior, b. Enfield, Middlesex in 1886.

Does anyone know anything about the school, or know where i could find any records?

Thank you  :)

Armed Forces / With the Colours
« on: Monday 24 October 11 14:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My Gt grandfather Ernest Walters (b.1877, Kensington), worked on the railway as a porter, according to the census.
I have done a quick search and on the records, which I'm looking at, it states that in Aug 11 he was 'with the colours'.

Is this a term used to do with the armed forces?

Hello,

my x2 gt grandfather, Edward Francis (b.1843 Bath, Somerset) married Mary Pay (b.1861 Lambeth) in Sep 1906. Their marriage certificate says that he was a widower aged 62 and Mary was a Spinster aged 48.

I'm interested in who Edward was married to before.

There are 12 children, the oldest I have being born in 1882, which is quite some time before Edward and Mary married.

Does anyone know how the best way for me is to find this out?
