The Common Room / Family History Speakers
« on: Friday 11 February 11 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
I'm running a little low on family history / local history speakers for a Yorkshire based family history group.

Does anyon know of any speakers that are good, reasonable and willing to speak on an evening.

I seem to have worked my way through my listings over the years and am looking for some new names to add to my new list.

If you are speaker or know of one please let me know at    (*)

Thanks

Banffshire / Keith Cemetery
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 13:59 GMT (UK)  »
I'm visiting family in Elgin next month and would like to find the headstones for my Godparents James (Jimmy) and Helen McKerron.

Jimmy was an ex police inspecter who later became a very fine Minister of the Ch of S and I believe they both rest in Keith Cemetery.  I know he had a very large funeral service in Elgin with many from both the police and the church + many of the friends he had made along the way.

Also a lady whom my mother worked for in Fochobers, a Miss Kynoch.  I remember going to a very large house with dressed maids.  My mother used to visit Miss Kynochs bedroom and my father and I stayed in the conservatory, I seem to remember there was an aviary aswell, or we toured the garden and were served afternoon tea.

I would love to visit her resting place, which  again I believe is in Keith Cemetery.

Any help in locating the plots would be of help and save me time

regards

Carol

Roscommon / Donnelly family
« on: Saturday 07 July 07 21:25 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Donnelly b1858 in Roscommon married  Anne McManus b1860 in Wakefield in 1883.

The father of Thomas was Patrick Donnelly

I don't know any further information about this family back in Ireland.

I've managed to come forward but stuck on Patrick, does anyone know of these people or could point me in the right direction

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Hinsley family of Carlton / Snaith
« on: Tuesday 13 June 06 20:35 BST (UK)  »
My father was told by his cousin, that he was related to Cardinal Hinsley - well if he's related, so am I.

As with all my family stories, they all come to my ears too late to be confirmed by who told who etc.,

I have a little of the cousins tree sprouting off mine, but no Hinsley names.

So I have decided to work forward and back at the same time and see if I can find a link to the cousin that way.

I have details of Cardinal Hinsley (Arthur) and his parents, siblings + a few more branches etc and not yet found the elusive link to the Randall family that links into my Siddle lot.

Does anyone know of this family or can suggest an alternative way of thinking.  I seem to be family history blinded at the moment!!!!!

regards and happy listing

« on: Sunday 08 January 06 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
Where is Andrew Langford ???

Andrew was born in 1807 in Giberalta - but is this Gib attached to Spain or Gib in Aylesbury ?

He married Hannah b 1815 in West Butterwick.

In 1861 he is found with his wife and 4 children living in Althorpe - which in later years he gives as his place of birth.

But where is he and Hannah in 1851 with their child Richard b 1849 in Althorpe.

Any help is welcomed

Moray (Elginshire) / Rotterdam Wedding
« on: Friday 01 April 05 22:21 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find the secon marriage for Alexander Cant c 1880.

Alexander married Jane Riach in 1867 and after giving him 8 children she died in 1878 (the same year as one of her children was born, could have been in childbirth - another search later).

In the 1881 census Jane's sister Margaret is living with Alexander and his 8 children as housekeeper - you know where I'm going don't you !!

Yes right, Alexander did marry Margaret but as it was against the law in Scotland to marry your sister in law he married in the Scottish Church in Rotterdam, Netherlands after the 1881 census had taken place.

I've contacted the church and other places but no one seems to be positive in which direction to send me.

Do  any 'chatters' have a route for me to try  ?            :)

By the way, alexander died in 1918 and  Margaret went on to give him 3 more children and died in 1932 aged 79.

thanks for any suggestions

Occupation Interests / Strange Occupation
« on: Monday 21 February 05 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
While adding extra ifo  to my website for the listed buildings in Wakefield.  I was looking for who lived where and when etc.

I came across the following in the 1853 Whites Trade Dir.

Cow Leech

Any ideas, as the mind boggles.  Was it someone who bred leeches for medicinal purposes ????

Moray (Elginshire) / Duncan / Strachan
« on: Wednesday 26 January 05 13:47 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me solve a family problem ?

My g.grandmother Mary Duncan b 1874 had a daughter, my grandma, Gladsia Brayshaw Grace Rhind Duncan (phew what a mouth full ) b 1901.

I have found out that Gladsia (Gladys) was base born but the story goes that  Mary Duncan later married a man named John Strachan and they moved to Canada.

Now I know that my parents recieved wedding pressies from Canada.

Someone in Elgin did a little research and found Gladys's school info.  At the time of her schooling her guardian was her grandmother, Elizabeth Milton b 1837 in Forgue and dying in Unthank in 1947.

I know this is a long shot but can anyone shed even a twinkle of light on my problem.

As they say a problem shared is a problem halved, but even half a problem still niggles at you.

Moray (Elginshire) / Cant & Riach families
« on: Tuesday 25 January 05 09:36 GMT (UK)  »
Alexander Cant married  Jane Riach in 1867.  She died leaving Alex with 8 children - he then married Jane's sister Margaret (who had been their housekeeper) by whom he had 3 more children.

Alexander was the son of James, who inturn was the son of another James,  who was the son of Alexander and finally the son of yet another Alexander.

They are not very interesting in their family names - but thats the Scottish naming tradition for you.

Does this sound familiar to anyone
