Dia daoibh!

I'd be grateful for confirmation that this photo is indeed that of the RC church in Tullamore.

The photo dates from Sept. 1967.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yorkshire (North Riding) / "Levensvale Hut" in Redcar?
« on: Friday 08 December 17 17:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

Has anyone ever heard of a "Levensvale Hut" in Redcar?

My mother, Eileen Magee, was born in Redcar on 5 July 1924. On her birth certificate the place of birth is given as "Levensvale Hut, Brookbank Avenue". The use of the word "Hut" is curious. My grandfather was a bus driver at the time and probably able to pay for decent accommodation for his family.

I did a Google search for "Levensvale Hut" but could not find any leads. Could it have been a temporary hostel which would explain why there is no longer any trace of it?

Am I right in thinking that the nearest Catholic church to Brookbank Avenue would have been the Sacred Heart? I want to get a copy of her baptism lines to see who her godparents were.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Monaghan / Consulting Northern Standard Obituaries
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 12:07 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to consult obituaries of the Northern Standard online?

If not, I would be very grateful if someone would kindly look up one for me; there is no hurry.

The obituary is that of Bernard Brady and was published on 26 December 1908, on p. 296.

A very big thank you!

Monaghan / Problem finding Monaghan records in Irishgenealogy.ie
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 11:41 BST (UK)  »
I have returned to my family history research after a few years of neglect and I was looking forward to getting copies of birth certificates of my O’Rourke family who were born in Co. Monaghan. To my consternation I cannot find them! Not even my grandfather Patrick O’Rourke whose certificate I already have! Is there a problem with the site and its search engine or am I doing something wrong? Here are the birth dates of those I tried to look up:

Francis Joseph, 1890
Mary Josephine, 1 April 1892, Gallina
Catherine, 1894, Monaghan town
Patrick, 20 July 1896, Lathlurkin (now spelt Latlorcan)

The parents were Patrick O’Rourke, RIC constable, and Margaret Brady. I have already their marriage certificate of 29 April 1889, but cannot find it on Irishgenealogy.

Are other people having the same problem?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have been given a very good photo of a young woman called Jan (?Janice) who was living in 1 Cedar Grove in Redcar. She gave it to my grandfather when he emigrated to Detroit in May 1930. I deduce that she must have been his lady friend.

Can anyone tell me who was living in that house at that time?

If anyone on the forum is related to this lady I will gladly pass on the photo to them.

Thank you for your help!

Hello!

I would welcome advice on where I might find out more about the life of my grandfather Michael Magee in Redcar from 1920 to 1930.

Initially Mike worked in Redcar first as a bus driver and then as a mechanic in the bus depot in Dormanstown, between Middlesborough and Redcar (see attached photo).

During his stay in England Mike became deeply involved in trade unionism and in socialist politics.

At some point he became the chauffeur of a Fabian MP. Whether this was a full-time job or a part-time one I do not know.

Mike may have worked for the Transport Workers Union and was also very active in the organisation of the 1926 general strike.

Any suggestions will be very welcome!

Dublin / Newspaper reports for George Magee killed by cricket ball approx. 1872?
« on: Saturday 12 October 13 11:40 BST (UK)  »
Dia daoibh!

My GGGF George Magee was killed by a cricket ball which struck him on the head, presumably during a match, sometime around 1872.

Do you think that his death would have merited a mention in a Dublin newspaper and if so where would be the best place to start looking? A quick search on the Irish Times and FindMyPast sites produced no results and I am daunted by the volume of material proposed by the Irish Newspapers Archives and Online Newspapers sites.

Secondly, does the Irish Handbook for Cricket that was published yearly at that time contain lists of members of cricket clubs? If so, where could I consult it? The National Library does not seem to have a copy.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Dublin / George Magee in Dublin Orange Order records?
« on: Saturday 12 October 13 11:37 BST (UK)  »
Dia daoibh!

I have just learned that my GGGF George Magee (approx. 1830 to approx. 1872) was probably a member of the Orange Order. He lived all his life in the Abbey Street / Great Strand Street area and was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church of Ireland.

Do records exist of the membership of Orange Order lodges in Dublin for the mid-1800’s and if so is it possible to consult them?

I did a Google search but did not find any promising leads.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Hart family in Liverpool area
« on: Sunday 18 August 13 13:00 BST (UK)  »
(Should this message be posted on the general Lancashire forum?)

I would be very grateful if someone could help put me in touch with a descendant of William Hart (about 1876 to ?) and his wife Anne née Whyte (1881 to about 1965) from Vesuvius Street in Liverpool. One of my great-grandfathers and his wife lived with the Hart’s in the 1920’s and ’30’s and I have reason to believe that the Hart family have preserved their family papers and photos.

William and Annie had two sons, Francis (see obituary http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/may/30/francis-hart-obituary)  and Thomas.

Francis had three children: Christopher, Nicholas and Jo.

His brother Thomas had four children: Richard, Robert, Catherine and Deborah.

One of Thomas’s grandchildren was living in Liverpool until recently, so I imagine that the family was living there too.

If you are able to help me, I suggest that you send the information to me as a private message, to protect the privacy of the Hart family.
