Lancashire / MANCHESTER ELECTORAL ROLL J BRIERCLIFFE
« on: Wednesday 15 May 24 22:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I have been looking on FindMyPast this morning as I have a subscription for 1 month and thought I would try and find more on my John Briercliffe and variant spellings.

I have tried searching on the various electoral roll lists for Manchester but cannot find him?  Any thoughts/tips please!!!

J BRIERCLIFFE in the electoral roll for
Greenwood Street, Manchester Township in 1835

Not sure if the below is the same John Briecliffe!

https://www.ancestry.com.au/search/collections/2410/?name=_briercliffe

Name:    John Briercliffe
Poll Year:    1836
Hundred:    Salford
Division:    Southern
Parish or Rectory:    Pilsworth
County:    Lancashire.

The address is what interests me as he is on the 1833-1835 Manchester Rate books.  There was nothing of any significance that I could see on the Rate Books (No mention of what may have happened to him??)

Also is there any way to search just the address after 1835 to see who is on the Rate books then ie Greenwood St. Manchester.  Any help is very much appreciated.  Kind regards Dianna

Lancashire / 1841 Census Manchester
« on: Wednesday 24 April 24 00:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I am hoping to find a copy of the 1841 Census for Manchester for my Hannah BRIERCLIFFE/BRICLIFFE age 30/35 with daugther ELIZABETH the address looks like Cumberland St. House 7? ( I think) (The copy I have is nearly illegible)

There’s about 8 people living in this house.  Looks like an 80 year old  ELIZA ? is the first mentioned on this record.  Would love to know exactly where this place is if possible.  Kindest regards Dianna

Australia / ANN MORGAN (RUFFIN) nee TURNER
« on: Saturday 13 April 24 00:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I am trying to find the death/remarriage of the above.  Ann TURNER was born c 1828 in or around HOBART Tasmania to convicts Ann Williams and William Turner.

Ann TURNER married Richard RUFFIN in Geelong Victoria 10th July 1851 in the Church of Scotland.

Richard died whilst the couple were in England on one of their trips! in 1863

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5751747?searchTerm=Richard%20Ruffin

Ann apparently returned to Victoria on the Southern Belle in 1868 as Ann Ruffhead aged 43.

She then married William MORGAN in Victoria in 1868 see marriage certificate attached.

Sorry had to remove the attachment.  Too large apparently

The Amelia Free as witness is her sister Amelia Turner who married George W G FREE.

Any help in finding where Ann MORGAN nee Turner ended up would be great. Kindest regards Dianna

Essex / WILLIAM TURNER (Convict)
« on: Thursday 04 April 24 01:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I'm doing research on the above:-

 WILLIAM TURNER:
Convicted for forgery - counterfeiting money
parents possibly from Chelmsford
Convicted at Essex 11 March 1822

Apparently he appears in the below papers?
The Chelmsford Chronical 1822
The Times 1822 (March 13 or 15)

He was on the "Leviathan" hulk in Plymouth before being transported to Tasmania on the "Arab" in 1822.

One record has him born in GRENADA from his indent!!  Not sure if this is correct.

He married a Sarah Waters in Tasmania in 1835 and they had the following children who were all living by 1853 (Sarah's death in Victoria)

GEORGE MEADOWS TURNER, b. 1837

WILLIAM HENRY TURNER, b. 1838, Hobart Town, Tasmania; d. September 11, 1879, Geelong, Victoria.  (NO BIRTH FOUND IN TASMANIA SO FAR)

AMELIA

CHRISTINA

NOAH B 1870 IN Victoria died Temora NSW 1915

I'm just including the children in case these names perhaps appear as parents/grandparent of WILLIAM TURNER.

So if there is any details on a William TURNER b c 1800 in Essex (Chelmford) or any other snippets of information that would be great.  Kind regards and thanks Dianna

Australia / FLORENCE ROSE KELLY (nee Turner) formerly Marston
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
Another tangle to sort out today!!  I am trying to find out if the above Florence Rose Kelly nee TURNER was living with any other family members on the electoral rolls in the Balmain area, 1920>1930's onwards.

Florences two surviving children are:-

ROSE FLORENCE TURNER/ MARSTON b 1906 Victoria d 1995 Sydney who married Colin W D TORY.  (I just received this marriage certificate).  They married in 1923 and Florence Rose KELLY gave permission for her 17 year old daughter to marry.

ARTHUR SAMUEL TURNER/ MARSTON b 1907 Victoria died August 1979. He married Eleanor M DUVAL in Balmain 1928.

Florence Rose TURNER married Richard MARSTON in Victoria 1909.  She seems to be on the Electoral Roll in Victoria possibly 1913/1917.

So it looks like Florence has perhaps left her husband and came to Sydney with her two children.

There was another son RICHARD LESLIE b 1909 registered under both TURNER and MARSTON he died in Victoria in 1911.

I don't know how the KELLY name gets into the picture at all!  Was she living with a Mr. Kelly or just more fiction??

Thanks for any help once again.  Kindest regards Dianna

Australia / Katherine Alice GREENLEES nee MURRAY
« on: Tuesday 05 March 24 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I am doing research on the above who was married to JOHN GREENLEES in 1906, the family lived in the Balmain area.

Katherine I think was born as Catherine A MURRAY in 1887 to John Patrick MURRAY and Sophia E. LOWDER/EN.  I'm not sure of the exact spelling of Sophias name but a John MURRAY married a Sophia LOWDER in Sydney in 1892.

Katherine died in 1973 listed on BDM as parents are John Patrick and SAPPHIRE (lol) typo?? perhaps.

So today's journey is trying to find the origins of JOHN PATRICK MURRAY and SOPHIA Elizabeth LOWDER etc spellings.

John Patrick MURRAY is supposedly born in Sydney in 1854,  no verification of that so far though.

The Greenlees family seem to be Mariners in the Balmain area or at least involved in boats/ships etc.  Many thanks kind regards Dianna

Australia / ROSE FLORENCE TORY nee MARSTON
« on: Sunday 03 March 24 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I am trying to find the death/burial of the above ROSE Florence TORY.  Rose was still living in 1992 and seems to have died between 1992 and 1995!  Possibly in the Tamworth area.

My friend, her Granddaughter is not too sure when she died, so I'm endeavouring to find out.

Rose F MARSTON was married to Colin W Denis TORY in Balmain North 1923.

She was born in Victoria in 1906 to a Florence Rose TURNER, who later married Richard Marston in Victoria in 1909.

Colin W TORY died in 1976.

Any ideas/clues would be wonderful.  Many thanks Dianna

Australia / LILA G MAHER (nee Starr?)
« on: Thursday 22 February 24 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I am trying to find any details on a LILA G MAHER who was living at 19 Thorncraft parade Campsie as of 12 June 1963.

This information comes from the death certificate of William Joseph STARR 11 June 1963 where Lila states that she is his daughter!

Lila was 49 in 1963.  Her mother is Lila Beatrice McCool (sometimes refered to as EULELIA!)

Lila G Maher maybe either illegitimate OR the daughter of Lila Beatrices first marriage to a NORMAN McPHERSON in Sydney 1921

She may be his Step-daughter but I would still like to find some information on her, marriage to a Mr. MAHER? (which I cannot find!) or her death.

Anyway I thought it may be possible to find out something on LILA G MAHER nee??? McCOOL/McPHERSON/STARR.

Thanks for any advice or help.  Kindest regards Dianna

Australia / CHARLES JOHN CARBERRY + ANNIE V RYAN-CARBERRY
« on: Friday 16 February 24 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
I am hoping to find the above on the NSW Electoral rolls 1949 and 1954 to see if any children are possibly listed with them.

The 5 children of the above are not listed on the NSW BDM as I think they are probably born after 1924/5 therefore I cannot find them.

Charles John Carberry and Annie Veronica RYAN were married in Newtown NSW in 1917.  One child born/died 1922 Donald C J Carberry from what I could see.

I have Charles John's death certificate (1960) and the children are not listed.

The children I have for the above are: 1) JOHN CHARLES (maybe died 1960)2) ELSIE MAY (later Elza WELLS), 3) CORAL?  4) KAY?? and ALBERT CARBERRY (he lived in Western Australia from my memory).

Any help with these relatives would be very much appreciated.  Kindest regards Dianna
