Berkshire / Mary from Mortimer - seeking guidance (or answers!)
« on: Wednesday 08 July 20 23:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Samuel Smith (1796-1856) married Mary (c1790-1866). They had a daughter Frances (b.1831 in Chelsea). Samuel's will indicates Frances as his only child.

In the 1851 and 1861 census Mary is recorded as born in Reading or Mortimer. Her birth year through 3 census's and her death cert ranges from 1790 (death) to 1795 (1841 census).

I have looked at marriages in London/Middlesex, Berkshire and Norfolk (where Samuel was born) between 1811 and 1831, and traced the Mary's, but none seem to fit the Mortimer link.

Can anybody advise or suggest some next steps?

Thank you

London and Middlesex / Rates and Census confusion (or clarificatio needed)
« on: Monday 06 July 20 00:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have several years of Westminster rates where a possible relative Richard Smith is paying paving or poor rates at 11 or 12 Denzell St, St Clement Danes. Including 1841.
When I look at the census records for 1841 he is not recorded as living at the address.
I imagine there is a really logical explanation for this.
Can anybody provide it??

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Unusual word in Parish Burial register
« on: Monday 15 June 20 06:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking at the below Parish register for Peter Wharton buried 20/05/1715.
There is an unusual word that I cannot decipher in the left column. It is against a number of entries throughout the 30 pages I looked at. I cannot seem to find a theme for what it might mean. I think Peter may have been 10 years old, and I think his parents may have been dead and it could mean that - but other entries don't seem to support the theory.

The records are in the below collection from Ancestry.com

London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812
Tower Hamlets
St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney
1701-1715

Any advice in deciphering the word is appreciated.

Regards

Wiltshire / Jane Serging - is the surname real?
« on: Sunday 05 April 20 01:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

According to Phillimores and the Wiltshire Marriages Index I have an ancestor called Jane Serging (of Brimble or Bremhill) who married John Simpkins (of Brinkworth) in Lydiard Millicent in 1721.
These are only printed records so I cannot see the original written entries.
I can find only 2 other people called Serging on Ancestry and 3 on Find My Past - none of them contemporary and none from Wiltshire. Minor spelling variations get a few options, but nothing that has similar dates or locations.
If anybody has any advice or suggestions it/they would be welcome.

London and Middlesex / Catherine Wilkins (nee Price)
« on: Saturday 14 December 19 22:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Catherine Wilkins (nee Price) was born in Ireland (c.1845) and married Job Wilkins in 1875. She appears with him in the 1891 census, and in 1901 he is marked as widower. They lived in Pancras, London.
I have searched death, funeral, burial records, newspapers etc on Find my Past, Ancestry and London Lives. I can find no record or even the suggestion of a record that may explain what happened to her.
I have searched between 1891 and 1901, plus after that time in case "widower" was a euphemism for "she left me"

Can anybody offer suggestions as to where I might look next?

Her story prior to marriage is also somewhat elusive!

London and Middlesex / Susannah Chalk (1799-1842) married Edward Taylor
« on: Wednesday 21 August 19 22:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Susannah Chalk, based upon her death certificate and the 1841 Census, was born in 1799 in Middlesex and died in Jan 1842. She married Edward Taylor, a baker in 1825 - both were of the parish of St Mary, Islington.

I have been unable to find any records of Susannah (or similar) that record a birth, or residency in Middlesex at, or around that time.

Does anybody have any suggestions, or even better has been more successful in researching her?

London and Middlesex / Isaac Thomas COUCHMAN
« on: Sunday 28 July 19 12:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

Isaac Thomas Couchman is becoming somewhat of an obsession for me - and some help, (or shared pain) would be most welcome.

He was born in Lee, Kent in 1796 and died in 1860. He lived latterly in Kensington, London, although he maintained an interest in Lee (1847 electoral registers).
I have much information on his time as a builder in Kensington, and have traced descendants as far as myself.

I think he is most likely the son of William Couchman (1776-1824) and Frances Laurinda Hearnden (1773-1851), because:
1. Frances's father is called Isaac (not a common name) and Williams is called Thomas. That sort of child naming is not uncommon.
2. Frances Couchman (mother, or sister)is witness at marriages of a few of the siblings, including Isaac
3. There are a number of bits and pieces that seem to link Couchmans from Lee, Couchman builders from Lee, Couchmans from Lee who live in the same part of Kensington, and Couchman builders from Lee who built houses in Kensington that they live in.

But without birth/baptism evidence I am reluctant to put that link into my tree.

Most of his likely siblings can be identified as family through local parish registers, as can various marriages etc

Note - he cannot be the son of Thomas Couchman and Fanny Barber, as is common on Ancestry due to clear evidence that two of their other children were born in the same year as Isaac.

Any assistance or suggestions would be most appreciated.

regards

London and Middlesex / Catherine Wilkins
« on: Saturday 03 December 11 06:04 GMT (UK)  »
Catherine Wilkins (nee Price) was born in Ireland in c.1845. She appears in the 1891 Census as married to Job Wilkins, and living in St Pancras. In the 1901 census Job is recorded as widower, living in Paddington. I can find no record of Catherine (or variants) Wilkins in the correct age range, either dead or buried between 1891 and 1901 in London. I have looked in BMD, FindMyPast, Ancestry, Genes Reunited, Family search.
Can anybody provide advice as to where else I might look? Or does anybody know about this person and her family?

Thank you.  Andrew

Cheshire / Snelson
« on: Saturday 26 November 11 05:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on the Snelson name.  In particular I have a  William Snelson born c.1793 in (maybe) Lower Peover. Different people on the genealogy sites have linked him and others born at a similar time, their possible wives and their offspring in various ways. If anybody has some clear information about him and his ancestors I would be grateful.
