Canada Lookup Request / Ontario birth lookup
« on: Thursday 06 August 20 18:56 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I'm currently researching Battle of Britain pilot, Norman Neil Campbell who was from St Thomas, Ontario and born c.1913. I've had a search of the various genealogical databases but don't have subscription access so I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to have a look for me?

Cheers

Census and Resource Discussion / M/NUR Annotation on 1939 Register
« on: Monday 06 February 17 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I've been looking at an entry on the 1939 Register. I'm aware that it was updated later and used by the NHS so some of the information may have been added later. I've googled this but not come up with much.

I'm looking at a particular entry in which the annotation 'M/NUR' is written beside the name of Florance (sic) Gertrude Paton. The surname Paton (written in a different ink to the original register) is crossed out and 'JOYCE' is written - both in the same ink as the 'M/NUR' with the date '19.6.73' also written in that ink. I've cross-referenced with the death registration records and there was a Florence Gertrude JOYCE whose death was registered in 1973 Jun qtr and born in 1890 (same year as on the register though different day of the month). My feeling is that the 1973 date refers to her death and the crossed out name shows she may have remarried after the death of Mr Paton in 1940 or changed her name for another reason. I've not found a Paton-Joyce marriage or a Joyce-Paton marriage that would fit.

Anyway, has anyone come across 'M/NUR' as an abbreviation before and knows what it refers to?

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for help restoring a photograph of a Boer War soldier. Unfortunately it's small format and a photograph of a page in a book rather than a scan (it was in the reference section of the library and there weren't any scanners available). If anyone can make anything of it, this would be wonderful.

I'm also curious if anyone can interpret the uniform for me.

I will post an attachment in a reply as the forum won't let me post one here.

Many thanks

United States of America / Arthur Whittall Sear
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

Looking for info on a distant cousin who immigrated from England to the US in 1913. So far I know the following:

- Arthur Whittall Sear was born on 29 Jul 1888 in Luton, Bedfordshire.
- He passed through Ellis Island on 21 May 1913.
- He married Elizabeth Georgina Burgess on 3 Jul 1916 in Detroit, Michigan.
- I have his WW1 Draft Registration Card from June 1917.
- He married Anna Pearl Fox Thompson on 24 Oct 1925 in Detroit, Michigan.

Would love to see how far down the line of descendents I can get, but I'm not sure where to look now.

Thanks,
- Lucia

Canada / Albert Wylie Punter, Winnipeg
« on: Monday 02 April 12 20:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I found an obituary for my fourth cousin in Winnipeg Free Press dated 21st March 1988 (via a google search). I wasn't aware that he had emigrated to Canada. He was born c1899 in Bradwell Abbey, Buckinghamshire, England. The obituary mentions his son and grandchildren but I'm not sure who his wife was. I know that he must have moved after 1920 as there is a citation for him in the London Gazette during that year. The obituary also states that he worked for a few organisations in England. Where should I look to find out more details about his immigration?

Thanks

World War Two / Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm
« on: Friday 30 March 12 02:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone,

Despite having spent several years researching my family history, I have only just begun to think about finding out more about my grandfather's time in the services. My mother remembers him mentioning Morse code. His marriage certificate states his occupation as "serving on fleet air arm of Royal Navy". The family believe that he spent some time around Egypt and/or Palestine. My Scottish grandmother was a WREN and they met at Invergordon.

After my grandmother moved into a home, we found a copy of his military records amongst his effects. My problem is that I can't decipher the abbreviations in the document. I wondered too if anyone here could advise me on how I can use his service records as a basis for further research.

At the top of the document under "Port Division", there is written 'fleet air arm' which has been crossed out with 'Lee-on-Solent' written above. The "Official Number" is filled in with 'Later JX 182698' which has been crossed out with 'F. X. 79491' written above. Under medals the text is 'CDQS 283/3' and 'Westminster 283.232'.

The next page has a list of ships including:- St Vincent, Kestrel, Daedalus, Furious, Landrail, Victorious, Ark Royal, Heron, Buzzard, Cormorant, Illustrious, Grebe and Royal Arthur. I can't read all of the names. After some of the names there are numbers: 810, 825 and 928, which I assume are the names of Fleet Air Arm squadrons.

Buckinghamshire / How do I know which baptism is his?
« on: Saturday 24 March 12 00:52 GMT (UK)  »
I recently came across my ancestor Samuel BENBOW on the Bedfordshire Gaol database, which stated that he was born c1762 in Stony Stratford, Bucks. He married Mary BARRETT in Hockliffe, Beds on 3 Feb 1800 and lived in and around Ampthill thereafter. A quick search of the IGI brought up two possible baptisms in Stony Stratford:

1) Samuel Benbow, chr. 23 Sep 1770, s/o Richard and Judith
2) Samuel Bendbow, chr. 9 Nov 1777, s/o Daniel and Susannah (they had a son called Samuel previously in 1775).

The other Samuel Benbow married Francis Hartwell in Stony Stratford on 30 Oct 1795.

How do I tell which baptism belongs to my Samuel? If I was to view the original marriage entry from 1800, is this likely to yield any clues about his family?

Thanks
- Lucia
