England / James YOUNG of Aston Northants - marriage Bisley Gloucestershire 1783?
« on: Monday 15 November 21 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
Mary YOUNG baptised 21 Aug 1792 in Aston Le Walls, Northamptonshire.

Parents - James YOUNG & Lydia.

Cannot find a marriage for them ~ 1792 in Northants. Not many other possibilities popping up on the search.

Looks like it could be a marriage on 23 Jan 1783 in Bisley, Glocuestershire to Lydia Baglin.

But distance Bisley - Aston is over 50 miles... seems a lot to move in 1783.

Can anyone help support this being the correct marriage for them despite the distance?

ADD: Looks like James Young baptised 1751 in Aston and Lydia Baglin(g) baptised 1756 in Bisley. That would connect the two places.

Oxfordshire / Who are Sarah and Mildred?
« on: Tuesday 18 August 20 18:09 BST (UK)  »
1841 Census in Tackley shows the King family:

A while ago I assumed that Sarah was the mother of John or Eliza.

Now I have found the parents of John (baptised 1803) to be Charles & Elizabeth, and the parents of Elizabeth (baptised 1810) to be Thomas & Mary.

So Sarah is the mother of neither of them.

And to make it more interesting, the baptism record of Mildred (bapt 1828) states her parents were Thomas & Sarah.

Now I have no idea how Sarah and Mildred are connected to this family! ???

Oxfordshire / "Gibraltar, The Mill" at Bletchingdon
« on: Thursday 14 May 20 10:42 BST (UK)  »
I have found a relative (Arthur Bullock) on the 1901 census living in Bletchingdon.

https://imgur.com/8ZjWueI

The address is stated as "Gibraltar, "The Mill"".

What/where is/was Gibraltar?

Neighbours are stated as living at "Mid Cottage, Gibraltar" and "Canal Cottage"

I wonder whether they were in the hamlet of Enslow https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enslow which is located on the canal, Arthur's occupation was flour miller at the water mill, and it is close to the Rock of Gibraltar pub hence "Gibraltar" for a location reference.

Can anyone with local knowledge advise?

Gloucestershire / Richard Keen bapt. 1720 Broadwell
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 12:55 BST (UK)  »
The baptism of Richard Keen in 1720 at Broadwell has the day different depending on the source.
  • Gloucestershire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1813 gives the day as 21. Looking at the image of the transcript it definitely is 21, the 2 and the 1 are written very differently.
  • Same source but now "an extract of the register of Broadwell" gives the day as 22, and again looking at the image of the record it definitely is a 2 and a 2.
  • Third source, "England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975" gives the day as 22, but there is no image of the record to view.
I am inclined to trust the first source and say the day was 21, and for some reason when copying over the records it was wrongly copied over as 22.

Any thoughts about this? Has anyone else seen a similar thing before?

Another thing to note, is that the baptism has a note of "omitted" - what does this mean?

Gloucestershire / John KING baptism ~1803 Kirtlington
« on: Sunday 15 September 19 16:32 BST (UK)  »
Can someone direct me to the online view of baptisms in Kirtlington for the period 1800-1810.

I have Ancestry subscription and have found where it should be located

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/oxfordshirebaptisms/

But the baptisms book available only starts at 1813.

I am looking to find the baptism of John King in Kirtlington about 1803. General search does not find something; wanted to look at the actual record book of the parish.

Any help finding information about John will be appreciated  :)

London and Middlesex / F PRINZ, multiple burials in plot at Nunhead Cemetary
« on: Wednesday 15 May 19 20:38 BST (UK)  »
I wish to know more information about the burial of an ancestor.

FREDERICK PRINZ died 20 June 1915 at the Sick Asylum, Bromley. When inquiring about the death I was told by a Royal London Hospital archivist that his record states he was admitted here on 18th June 1915 from Stepney parish, age 77, address 26 Juniper Street, Shadwell, wife Harriet Sarah PRINZ.

I have now found his burial was on 25 June 1915 at Nunhead Cemetary, Southwark.

The interment details for the grave lists 14 occupants, who are unrelated. The burial dates for these persons were around a week either side of Frederick's burial.

My understanding is that after some time a grave can be reused, or that multiple occupation around the same time may occur if there is overcrowding or an outbreak of illness (e.g. plague). I thought maybe this is some sort of pauper's grave, however I would not expect so many to buried in such a small time frame. Perhaps in London these things are more common. This is my first time looking at a burial record like this, it seems unusual at least compared to the burials at churches in sleepy rural villages that I'm used to looking at.

I have attached images of the plot details if the record headings can be deciphered.

If anyone can provide any further explanation will be appreciated.

Thanks,
