World War Two / WW2 Royal Marine - William Neild - May 1942 to 1946
« on: Wednesday 02 September 15 19:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, my grandad was a marine in WW2 & I have his service papers which only give bases as names although I know he was a gunner on the ships. I have a photo which says 6" Gun Battery dated around June 1942, he joined as soon as he was old enough. He has the Africa Star and the Italy Star in addition to the usual War Medal & 1939-45 Star. How do I find out more information of what they all went through?

Many thanks for any help and advice you can give me.

 :) :)

Ireland / Moses Cavanagh - help please??
« on: Monday 11 October 10 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone help please?  I have Moses Cavanagh born circa 1781 in Ireland who died 21 Dec 1844 in Manchester.  He is registered with his wife Margaret Carroll on the 1841 census in Manchester with their 4 children who were born in Manchester from 1822 to 1837.  Is there any way of me finding out when Moses & Margaret came over from Ireland and where they were originally from?

Many thanks, Tracy  ???

Northumberland / HELP?? 1924 death in Tynemouth
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 21:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, John Norman Gilhome listed as died in 1924 in district of Tynemouth.  I know in 1917 he married at H C Columbus R C Church in Wallsend & was listed at various times as a Coal Putter, Surface Labourer & Plumber.  His daughter was born in Wallsend on 10th September 1924, on her birth certificate he was listed as deceased.

I am making the 7 hour journey in a few weeks up to the area but only for the weekend and wondered if anyone would know the most likely cemetery to search in??

Hoping someone can help as I can't get to the records office till the same day & dont think there will be enough hours to do that & find a possible grave & they charge £25 per hour to search but wouldn't be able to do that in time for my visit anyway  :(

Many thanks if anyone can help at all   :)

World War One / Help please?? - WW1 1915 Ypres - William Howard
« on: Monday 26 July 10 20:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi my great uncle William Howard was born 1895 in Manchester.  He served in WW1 & was injured on 8th May 1915 at Ypres.  Apparently he lay in nomansland with 27 wounds for 3 days before he was taken away by the Germans to hospital, they say he was given skin grafts there from a deceased russian solder!!. He was then in a POW camp near Hanover.  In 1917, under an agreement, he was sent to Switzerland together with badly wounded soldiers of various nationalities.  My great grandmother Mary Ellen Howard either visited or went to collect him from Switzerland, travelling "through war torn France" which was organised through the Red Cross.

His name is listed on the WW1 memorial on Rochdale Road, Collyhurst, Manchester, dedicated to those that lost their lives however he definitely came back in 1919 when he left Switzerland.  Upon his return the local Manchester paper referred to him as "the pepperpot hero".

A family relative seems to think he was in the Kings Royal Rifle Corp but I can't find any service records or medal roll index cards that relate to him :(

Can anyone suggest how I can find further details of his time during the war and any records or proof and also how I could locate this old newspaper article?

Many thanks, Tracy  :)
