Canada / John F Sinclair - 1931 census
« on: Sunday 14 January 24 13:36 GMT (UK)  »
I've posted previously (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=872328.0) with questions on my relative John Findlay Sinclair (b1904). I recently had a breakthrough and discovered that he had travelled from Scotland to Canada in 1929 and is on the 1931 Census living in Manitoba.  I am looking for suggestions as to where to turn next to locate any other records related to him. Any help would be much appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / John Findlay Sinclair

I'm looking for any ideas as to how I could track down someone after their discharge from the army. After two years, I finally got a copy of my great uncle's army records. He was a gunner in the Royal Artillery and was discharged in September 1934 after 12 years. The only address listed in the records was the family home in South Queensferry. I can't find any record of him in Scotland although there is another John Findley Sinclair listed but it is not him. My relative was born May 31st 1904. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Ireland / Birth records 1830s
« on: Saturday 10 April 21 14:04 BST (UK)  »
I've discovered that my great, great grandfather was born in Ireland around 1830s and came to Scotland appearing in the 1851 Scottish census with his mother. I'm looking for suggestions as to how I would go about finding his birth record given that I have no idea where in Ireland he was born. Any advice would be much appreciated.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Stanners
« on: Wednesday 09 September 20 16:51 BST (UK)  »
My paternal great grandmother was Helen Fraser b1886 in Edinburgh. She was illegitimate with only her mother, Janet Fraser, listed on the birth certificate. Her mother married in 1886 (Hugh Mackintosh) and she (Helen) is identified as Helen Fraser Mackintosh on the 1901 census, Helen F.S Mackintosh in 1902 when she marries Daniel Sinclair and Helen Fraser on her death certificate in 1956. Sounds all very straightforward.
However, on her son's death certificate she is identified as Nellie Sinclair (maiden name Stanners). I found a Helen F Stanners (b1886 Midlothian) on the 1891 census for Bridgeness, Carriden. She is listed as the adopted daughter of James and Betsy Stanners.
So, my question is (and I may be completely wrong) could Helen's biological father be a Stanners? If not then why would she be adopted in 1891 and then be living with her mother in 1901? Any advice would be welcome.

Inverness / Two birth/baptism registrations 3 years apart
« on: Monday 07 September 20 19:58 BST (UK)  »
I have come across two birth/baptism registrations for possibly the same person. Why would that happen? One was in 1838 and the other 1841 both in Croy and naming the same parents. I have checked for a death in between but found none. There was also another child born in 1836.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Missing death certificate(Completed).
« on: Wednesday 02 September 20 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Struggling to locate a death certificate and I'm looking for suggestions on where else to look.

David Thomson b1821 Kennoway
He appears in the 1861 census living at Pettycur Road, Kinghorn with wife (Elizabeth McArthur) and 3 sons and 3 daughters.
In 1869 there is a birth certificate for Andrew Thomson/McArthur. Mother is listed as Elizabeth Thomson, widow of David Thomson. Son is illegitimate.
In 1870, Elizabeth marries Peter McEwen and they both appear on the 1871 census as well as two children born in 1863 and 1865, both with last name Thomson.
I'm thinking that David died between 1861 and 1866 but I can't find a record.

Any help would be appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Missing birth certificates
« on: Tuesday 18 August 20 19:51 BST (UK)  »
What would be the reason for not being able to locate birth certificates for two members of a family? From the 1851 census I know that there are 9 children born from 1828 to 1850. All are listed as being born in Kettle, Fife. There is a birth certificate for Thomas (b1828) but nothing for Jessie (b1830) or Helen (b1832), however all the children after that are recorded. I've located Jessie's death certificate and it records her parents as listed in the census. Any advice would be appreciated.

Perthshire / Ardgaith Bothy: John Robbie b1879
« on: Wednesday 22 July 20 19:49 BST (UK)  »
Trying to locate John Robbie after 1901 census. He was born on July 27th 1879 in East Hatton, Cargill. His mother was Janet McIntosh and father George Robbie (not married). The 1881 and 1891 census have him living with his grandparents in Coupar Angus. In 1901 he was working on Ardgaith Farm. There is no sign of him on the 1911 census. Any advice would be welcome.
