Antrim / Wilmot Smerdon Mack
« on: Thursday 08 November 12 10:02 GMT (UK)  »
Help wanted to find Wilmot Smerdon Mack. He was in Belfast for 4 years (1907 - 1911). Born 17 June 1875 in Hackney, London, he married Marianne Lena Firth at Richmond Surrey in January 1898 and they had a son, Percy Wilmot Blyth Mack, later in June of that year.

But, by the 1901 Census Wilmot Smerdon Mack was in lodgings in London on his own... but not for long because he had a child by Prudence Eleanor Cook(e), Gerald Mack who was born on 24 February 1903 (my wife's father). Then on 1 April 1907 Eleanor (as she refers to herself) (would be) wife of Wilmot Smerdon Mack gives birth to Norman Mack at 7 Allworthy Avenue, off the Antrim Road, Belfast, which looks like rented property. This fact is proven from a new certificate from your GRONI.

Wilmot was an artist, signwriter, commercial artist and/or fine artist. His father was a wealthy banker but most of what I surmise is that he was a bit of a rakish character… the birth certificate of Norman in 1907 is the last trace of Wilmot Smerdon Mack. By The 1911 Census, my missing 4 years, Eleanor and sons Gerald & Norman are back in Sydenham South East London and she describes herself as a widow and home worker making flags! But was she actually married to Wilmot Smerdon Mack and was he really dead!

My wife is convinced her grandfather just did another runner, off to America or somewhere like County Clare (conjecture)… some lateral thinking and any help welcomed.

Durham / William Hardy - Sunderland Census Lookup request
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 17:55 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying hard to develop information on my Great Great Grandfather - William Hardy bapt. 17 Oct 1834 Sutton upon Derwent Yorkshire who moved to Sunderland in circa 1860 with his brother Jonathan Hardy; they both joined the Sunderland Borough Constabulary. Members have already helped with census information from 1861 (as below) + census 1871,1881,1891,1901 even 1911 for Jonathan but I can't find William Hardy on FreeBDM.

The death of William Hardy is recorded in Burials Bishopwearmouth Cemetery , Sunderland District, 28 Jan 1900, William Hardy, of 11 Wharncliffe Street, age: 65, ex policeman. His wife was Hannah Plummer, married 26 November 1855 at Thorganby, Yorkshire.

1861 Census (date: 7 April), Sunderland District
Family Number: 46728.6
Sunderland 1861 Census, Bishopwearmouth - 9 Green Street (RG9/3765 Folio 82, Page 26 & Folio 83, Page 27)
William Hardy, Head, married, 26, Police Constable, born Sutton, Yorkshire
Hannah Hardy, Wife, married, 24, born Thorganby, Yorkshire
George Hardy, son, 4, Scholar, born Hull, Yorkshire
Sarah J. Hardy, daughter, 2, born Bishop Wilton, Yorkshire
Caroline Hardy, daughter, 2 months, born Sunderland, County Durham
John A. Hardy, brother, unmarried, 22, Police Constable, born Sutton, Yorkshire

I can do William Hardy's ancestry back to 1651, ha ha!, but I can't get him in the Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland Census during the 19th Century!

Thanks for any help y habla pronto, amigos

Durham / Sunderland Borough Constabulary

With no surviving late Victorian records of The Sunderland Borough Constabulary can I invite detectives amongst us (and that means every genealogist) to give me some sources based on lateral thinking.

I am a retired Policeman (Sussex Police) but my Gt Gt Grandfather William Hardy (Bapt. 17 Oct 1834 at Sutton upon Derwent, Yorkshire, died 28 Jan 1900 Sunderland) and my Gt Gt Grand Uncle (his brother) Jonathan Hardy (born 26 June 1838 at Sutton upon Derwent, Yorkshire, (possibly) died aged 82yrs in Dec Q 1920). They were both Police Sergeants, and in their final years Police Pensioners, of The Sunderland Borough Constabulary.

I have said on my few previous postings, the names and dates are not as important as the story of my ancestors' lives.

Can anyone offer some of that lateral thinking to my quest? Wouldn't you think the 'police' might have done better at preserving some vital records?

Habla pronto Amigos

Help please:
I am trying to establish that Jonathan Hardy of East Field, Seamer who died 22 Jan 1904 (as reported Malton Messenger)+(Death aged 77 - March Q 1904 Scarbro' 9d/265) is the same Jonathan Hardy who was born 26 June 1838 at Sutton upon Derwent, the son of John Hardy (1795 - 1873 of Sutton upon Dewent) and his wife Hannah nee Kirkby and of my interest (well they both are, of course!)

Both Jonathan Hardy of Seamer, who was married to Anne Elizabeth Clarke (Sept Q 1858 Malton 9d/507) and their son Thomas Clarke Hardy, a farmer of East Ayton (born Dec Q 1860 Scarbro' 9d/289), made their contributions as Councillors and School Board members of their communities.

I have tried FreeCensus without success... just someone help me on the census 'place of birth' for Jonathan... obviously I'm looking for Sutton upon Derwent.

I have a whole 5 pages of research on The HARDYs of East Ayton & Seamer... they are so so close to a link with The HARDYs of Easingwold http://www.serpent.co.uk/the-book/the-hardys-of-easingwold/ but I need that final confirmation.

Whilst on Hardys I have 4 generations of Witty Hardy, all of East Ayton including the blacksmith ... now there's a good name.

Thanks for members help on this (in advance)

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Lookup request William Hardy b.1835 York
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 17:52 BST (UK)  »
My first posting!!!
William Hardy born 1835 in Sutton (upon Derwent?) or West Cottingwith or Thorganby in the Diocese of York, Yorkshire married Hannah (b.1836) Plummer of Thorganby (father Robert Plummer of Alne) on 26 November 1855. I have ordered this archive marriage document but I have been unable to find William Hardy in 1851 Census.

I am planning a visit to York in September but would really appreciate a lookup before then.
