Armagh / Hall, Mecklin, Leith.....
« on: Monday 20 May 13 10:09 BST (UK)  »
I have found an unattributed reference to an Alexander Hall b 1686 in "Mecklin of Leith",  Armagh.
According to this reference  Alexander had a son named Alexander Hall who was born in 1711 in the same place. This Alexander had a son also named Alexander Hall who was baptised in Lurgan, Armagh on 23 September 1763. He was married to Sarah Smythe, daughter of William Smythe of Grove Hill Co Down.

I havent heard of Mecklin of Leith, and these dates seem to be going back quite far - could anyone suggest whether there might be a kernel of truth in any of it?

Much appreciated, as always. :)

I have a series of Belfast newspaper adverts 1820s- 1840 for the sale of property and land of an ancestor of mine from lurgan who was referred to in a very matter of fact manner as "a lunatic".   :-[

As he was seen to be unfit to manage his estate is it likely or possible that it would have been managed or oversighted by a government agency? Or was this kind of thing managed by private lawyers?   Would records still be available?

Thank you.

Ireland / How were the circumstances of "lunatics" managed in 1840s Ireland?
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 12:45 BST (UK)  »
I have just found that an ancestor in Lurgan was classified as a 'lunatic' in 1820. He survived until the mid 1830s, but newspaper reports indicate that his "estate" was managed by a court for perhaps a decade before his death. I would like to find out more about whether records might be available on the case. If anyone help I would be very grateful. Thanks.

Antrim / Muslin manufacturer in Belfast
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 12:29 BST (UK)  »
I have found a reference to an ancestor who was a "muslin manufacturer" in Belfast in 1819.
Is there a good source of information on what a muslin factory in Belfast might have looked like in 1819?
Thanks

Armagh / A distillery in Lurgan 1804
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 12:24 BST (UK)  »
I have just found an 1804 newspaper advert for the sale of a distillery outside of Lurgan, owned by a Joseph Hall. The advert indicated that the distillery produced large quantities of whisky.
Is there a source I could use to find out more about  the distillery?

Thanks,

Australia / What happened to Louisa Margaret, in Melbourne in 1846.
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 00:02 GMT (UK)  »
Anne Atkinson Hall was born to Joseph Hall and his partner Louisa Margaret xx  in Melbourne in 1846.
In 1850 Joseph said he was single when he married Ellen Bindon in Melbourne.  Soon after they returned to Ireland with young Annie. Annie remained in Ireland for most of the rest of her life.

I have found no death records for a Louisa Margaret in Melbourne in the interim, and I am curious about who she might have been. I have a Melbourne marriage of a Margaret Louisa McDonnell in 1852, might it be possible that the scribe turned the names around and this could be the same person?

Happy to hear any opinions!

Ireland / Joseph Dexter died 1893-1911, but where?
« on: Saturday 16 March 13 23:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Joseph dexter was born in Fintra sometime aound the 1840s. He married Annie Hall in county clare in 1866, had some children, was a land agent and a JP in clare.
He was named in a list of JPs published in 1893.
His wife was a widow in 1911.
No reference to any dexters in the 1901 census as far as I can see.  Maybe they travelled somewhere?  I would be very grateful for any clues about where i might search for him.
