Flintshire / Where is 'Gerddi'
« on: Monday 05 December 16 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
The 1881 census has the address of 1, Gerddi, Rhuddlan (Flint) St Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales.
Ref: RG11,piece 5528, folio 18 page 1.

It is the home of John Edward Jones aged 29 born in Llangynog and a collector for fire act insurance.
With him is his wife and 3 children.

I have always thought that it was part of Millbank Road in Rhyl, but now I'm not sure. I think that Rhyl was still part of Rhuddlan, at this time, hence the address above. Why is Denbighshire shown in the address?

This family did settle in Rhyl and appear in subsequent censuses in Clwyd Street.

Please if anyone has the local knowledge to pinpoint the address, I would  appreciate it.
Thank you...Eldon.

Devon / Trying to find 'Calborough'
« on: Wednesday 27 November 13 18:36 GMT (UK)  »
I asked about this in 2005 and when I updated the old tread it ended up in the completed lookups and I doubt if it will be read. So I am starting afresh. The old thread cab still be read with the title of Lucy Vickery in 1851.
Lucy (my GGGmother) was born in Sampford Peverell on the 27/8/1849. Her mother was Sarah Vickery nee Calborough. The informant on her certificate is quote 'X the mark of Mary Pearce occupier Sampford Peverell' She registered the birth about 3 weeks later on the 5/9/1849.
She could not read and write so the details would have been written for her so the maiden name may not have been included or not understood. I am suggesting that Calborough was a guess. I cannot find anything on this surname. My hope is that the marriage can be found in the register at Sampford Peverell.
The marriage would probably before the birth of their eldest child Julianna in 1830. The father was James Vickery, a blacksmith.
Is it please possible for someone to check the parish records for this marriage.
In the 1851 census Mary Pearce was a 70 yr old pauper weaver living with 2 other paupers. How could she register a birth when there is no obvious family connection. Also would she have to go Tiverton or would the Registrar travel to the villages.
Thank you very much

Glamorganshire / Baptism at Peterston in 1872.
« on: Saturday 30 June 12 23:40 BST (UK)  »
My objective is the trace the parentage of Mary Elizabeth Anne Jones.
I am beginning to think she was illegitimate.
In 1871 census she was a servant with the Vicar of Llandrillo in Merioneth
A month later she married John Edward Jones ( schoolteacher) at Corwen Registry office.
A year later she gives birth to a daughter at Peterston in Glamorgan.
The only reason I can think of to make that long journey is to be with 'Mum'
The details from the birth certificate are:
27/5/1872      Edith           Girl         John          Mary                     Schoolmaster        Mary E.A.Jones       5/7/1872
Peterston       Catherine                 Edward        Elizabeth                                           Mother
                                                     Jones         Ann  Jones                                         Peterston
                                                                      formerly
                                                                      Roberts
In July 1873 she gives birth to a son in Llandrillo
I am hoping that somebody is able to check the baptism to see if an address is given so that I can check the census returns.
Thank you for any assistance.
Regards Eldon.

Flintshire / What part of Rhyl is Newtown.
« on: Friday 29 June 12 16:44 BST (UK)  »
I was checking baptisms in Rhyl and came across:
4:2:1886. Clara daughter of John and Mary Anne Jones, Bookseller of
5 South Terrace, Newtown.
I came across Newtown in a few other baptisms.
In the burial register I came across Edward Jones age 12months from 5 South Kinmel Street.
This was dated 10th April 1897. It is this address that I associate with this family.
There is a North and South Drive in the south of the town built much later.
There is a North and South Avenue in the west of the town when the Winter gardens was developed
in the early 1880s. I have tried an internet search to no avail.
I am asking if 5 South Terrace became 5 South Kinmel Street?
Thank you.

Denbighshire / Why would she say her father had died
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
This is my brick wall. I am trying to trace the parentage of Ann Roberts.
Her marriage certificate of the 16:5:1871 at Corwen Register Office states:
John Edward Jones   22yrs  batch   Schoolmaster  'Glyn' LLandriilo John Jones   farmer
Mary roberts          21yrs  spin         ---           'Tyddynllan' Llandrillo  Robert Roberts, deceased  Smith

There are no family witnesses and the two that did were a man/wife living in Corwen with no apparent connection to either family.

!871 census she is living at Tyddynllan(Home of a retired clergyman) as a house servant, aged 25 years and born in Abergele.
All subsequent census returns have a slight fluctuation in her age but all say that she was born in St George (Denbigh or Flint)
I am looking for a girl born circa 1948 in the Abergele district whose father is Robert Roberts.
The local Registrar has done a search of all births between Oct 1846 and Dec 1853 and found two.
One born 25:11:1847 and the other 13:8:1848. I have the certificates. Both father are on the 1881 census and neither are a smith (Both farmers)
I consider my research as sound so why would she say her father had died?

Denbighshire / John Evans Chirk Bank
« on: Thursday 15 July 10 20:58 BST (UK)  »
I have the marriage cert for Athalia Evans and Thomas Dodd who are my paternal Gt GT Grandparents.
8th July 1839 at St Martins Parish Church, Salop:
T Dodd    20  Batch  Boatman  Preesgweene   Phillip Dodd  Labourer
A Evans  19  Spin                     Preesgweene  John Evans  Collier

Her Baptism is at Chirk Parish Church on the 2nd April 1820 and her parents are John Evans, Collier and his wife Ann. The place is Pen-y-Bryn. Possible siblings are Samuel 1820 @Chirk Bridge, Edward 1821 @Chirk Bridge and Mary 1822 @Chirk Bank (they are very close together)
Am I right in thinking that Pen-y-Bryn is in the same area as Chirk Bridge and Chirk Bank. Preesgweene is also in the locality and Thomas is working the Llangollen canal that runs through the area.

Can anyone please provide any further information on her father John Evans. As a collier he would presumably be working the Brynkinallt colliery.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Marriage of William Jones and Ann Lythall.
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 20:14 BST (UK)  »
William Jones born circa 1812 (I don't know where) Coal Miner married Ann Lythall Bap on the 13:8:1815 at Kingswinford. She was the daughter of James and Sarah Lythall.
William and Ann had 12 children all born in Kingswinford, and they also died there. I cannot find any marriage for them.
Their first child was baptised 21:9:1834. William would be about 21 in 1833.

I am also hoping that the marriage would reveal what parish he came from.

Could someone with access to the Kingswinford area parish records please do a check. Negative replies would be equally important.

Thank you for any assistance.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Birthplace for William Jones circa 1812
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 19:57 BST (UK)  »
In 1841 William is living with his wife Ann and 3 children Louisa, Josiah and Sophia, in Town's End, Kingwinford. His Wife and children are all born in Staffordshire. There is no indication where he was born so I assume he was born 'out of the County'
In 1861 William is living with his wife and 7 children in Church End Kingswinford and his birth place is shown as Stourbridge in Worcs.
In 1871 William is living with a son in Chirk and his birthplace is shown as Herefordshire.
Could someone please check the 1851 census for Kingswinford with this information, to establish his place of birth.
William Jones (his age varies) say 38+/- 2  b: 1812-Coal Miner
Ann 35+/- 2 born Kingswinford.
Children: Josiah Bap 1837, Mary Ann Bap 1843, Sophia Bap1840 and
William bap 1848- all born in Kingswinford.

Thank you very much for any assistance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Grandmother I never knew
« on: Friday 09 January 09 15:02 GMT (UK)  »
My grandmother was born on the 12:4:1874 and married on the 10:2:1896. I have dated this dress to about 1895 and I suspect the picture was taken when she was 21. She was the eldest daughter of a coalmining family and married into a similar one.
It is a scanned copy of a picture 9" X 7" and I don't have access to the original.
I have tried unsuccessfully to remove the lines above her shoulders and the smudges on her dress, I think that the large smudged area to her left was a vase of flowers.
I am asking if someone could please tidy up the photograph.
Thank you for your assistance.
Regards Eldon.
