Travelling People / How could I confirm if I have travelling ancestry?
« on: Saturday 22 August 20 01:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, sorry to intrude.

I am Northern Irish, all of my ancestors are from Northern Ireland. The bulk of my autosomal dna is Ulster Irish and Scottish, with maybe a tiny sprinkling of Northern English.

One thing I noted was a recurring Asia South that kept showing up in my results. This initially appeared in Ancestry and was removed, it is also on MyHeritage at 1.5%.

I uploaded my AncestryDNA results to Gedmatch K13 and have 2.6% South Asia on there.

I have been trying to find out how on earth I could have Indian dna and the suggestion was Romanini people??

How could I confirm if this was the case, as this would likely to have been an affair if it had’ve ever occurred, so it wouldn’t be documented?  Is there anything I need to look for in my dna results?

Derry (Londonderry) / History: Donegal to Coleraine migration stream? Why?
« on: Saturday 13 June 20 14:23 BST (UK)  »
I have one line of my family tree (McSheffrey) which appears to have migrated from the Inishowen area to Coleraine.

From my knowledge Donegal to Coleraine is not and was not a common migration route. Usually Donegal people would more commonly move to Derry/Londonderry.

Was this a common migration route in the 1700’s? Or was it more likely to be a movement for marriage?

I am trying to establish why this odd move occurred, so I would appreciate if any local historians could give their opinion on this.

Thanks.

Derry (Londonderry) / Quick Query: Can someone help me find this mother?
« on: Wednesday 27 November 19 21:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, so once again i'm on my Cummins line. I want to work out who the wife of my GGG Grandfather is, to do this I have been systematically going through my GG Grandfathers siblings.

Now, firstly when I look at this: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Articlave/Ballywildrick_Upper/587994/

I see Rachel and Margaret, I cannot find their baptisms. Ignoring this, there is nieces and nephews known as Matthews and Blair.

Now, I have found the mother of the Matthews Children - she is Mary Anne Cummins and she had 4 children.

However, when I put in the names of these blair children nobody Cummins pops up. What appears is Matilda Matthews.

Jane - Baptised in 1898, mother is Matilda Matthews.

Mary Anne - Baptised in 1896, mother is Matilda Matthews.

Robert  - Baptised in 1895, mother is Matilida Matthews.

If these are neices and newphews of Rachel and Margaret Cummins, why is the mother called Matilida MATTHEWS?

Is Matilda Mary Ann Cummins' daughter?

Also, where is the mother and why are they living with their aunts? There is a child born between 1901 and 1911 so she was definitely alive in 1901.

Derry (Londonderry) / Cummins - Trying again
« on: Thursday 29 November 18 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
So I am trying to find the Parents of my GGG Grandfather, James Cummins (1810-1895).

I know that James was born in the Magilligan area and moved to The Articlave area sometime in the 1850’s.

I have been provided with all Cummins records in Magilligan Presbyterian Church up to and including 1844. Unfortunately, his Baptism is not there as records didn’t start until 1814.

Now here are his known children (that I know of):
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Bannbrook/Ringrash_More/588338/

http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Articlave/Ballywildrick_Upper/587994/

I cannot find James, Rachel or Margaret’s baptism. I did find a Margaret baptised in 1873 in Coleraine, however, her parents are listed as James junior  (above) and Sarah McSheffrey. Margaret and Rachel are listed as James Seniors children in his will. Why would James senior list Margaret as his daughter in his will if it was his Granddaughter? And also why would a 61 year old man father a child?

I have also seen a death certificate of a women who was his wife known as “Matilda”. I do not know if this is my GGGG Grandmother.

Within the Magilligan Presbyterian Church there are two marriages that stand out as being possibly him:

Jane Glen (1826)
Jane McReynolds (1837)

There are also more than 20 James listed in the Communicants records over the years.

How do I discern which one of these James’ is mines and who is parents and partner is?

I have searched extensively including on Newspaper records and struggled to find anything.

Please help.

Derry (Londonderry) / Mary Sinclair
« on: Tuesday 28 August 18 11:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have a 4x Great Grandmother called Mary Sinclair, married to Thomas Irwin of Bovevagh.

Mary was born in 1794 and died in 1872.

I have no location for her birth or where she was originally from. Looking on the 1766 religious census it would appear there are two families, one in Ballintoy and one in Ballinascreen?

There is also some Sinclairs in Coleraine in 1831 but I am not sure if they have moved there.

I would like to find Mary’s birth or at least tie her down to a specific area as I am interested in seeing where she came from, originally.

Thanks

Derry (Londonderry) / McWilliams

I started my Maternal family again. I got to James McWilliams and it says that his father is John McWilliams. Problem is he moved from somewhere so I don't actually know where James is from to tie down his parents, the marriage certificate does not say who James mother is.

James M Rose Curran in 1902.  Apparently James was born in 1878.

All I know is that a george phillips is my gggg grandfathers grandfather and I cannot physically locate this man. Over the weekend I tried glendermott catholic church and st columbs church of ireland found nothing. I am clueless. Does anyone know anything about the history of this name in derry? What are its origins?

Tyrone / Fintona Catholic church
« on: Friday 11 October 13 20:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello, trying to find out a birth of a John Kerr. I believe he is from Tyrone.
He married Catherine Mellon in 1880 in Fintona Catholic church (name was written as John CARR)
I believe his mothers maiden name is 'Phillips'.

I am not sure what church he could've been baptised in but I believe his birth date is 1855.
Here he is in the 1911 census:

Derry (Londonderry) / Kerr of clondermot
« on: Wednesday 08 May 13 08:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to research a maternal line of mines the kerrs. So far I have got back to john kerr of clondermot who is born in tyrone.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Glendermot/Ballyore/1539075/

I believe his mother is phillips but I am not sure. I cannot find any births in 1855 or there abouts.

If you read this paper you will see a mention of john kerr and his grandfather george phillips.

http://m.londonderrysentinel.co.uk/news/local/newbuildings-then-and-now-1-2094918

There is also a william phillips aged 75 who may be his uncle. The house is owned by john kerr.

Thats all I have. I believe catherine is catherine mellon and I believe they got married in clogher so perhaps john kerr is from clogher.
