The Common Room / Buying Wages
« on: Monday 06 May 19 10:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have this quote from a document:

Thomas Pratt, William Blackmur, Shipwrights, Sheerness. They bought the wages of Thomas Pritten and George Olive Sr., Caulkers, for one shilling in the pound. The men left without being properly discharged and were marked as Run. They ask for the Runs to be removed so that they may be reimbursed.

What is menat by 'buying wages' - and also I assume Run means leaving without authority but not sure

Thanks in advance

The ship sank in 1860 with 2 of my ancestors, from North Shields on board.

Any information on this boat would be welcome.

I am researching the family of George Frederick Blackmur.  Censuses (1881 and 1891) record him as being born in St George in the East in 1849.  His occupations include (candle) packer.  He is sometimes recorded as having the surname BLACKMAN.

Between and 1881 and 1891 the family lived in Bethnal Green

I am trying to find him in 1901 when he is not recorded as living with his wife (Louisa) and family stories suggest he had left her.

At his daughter's wedding in 1911 he is recorded as being a soap manufacturer

Northumberland / North Shields - Shields News Names Index
« on: Monday 21 June 04 23:41 BST (UK)  »
Is everybody aware of the fantastic Name Index held by North Shields library.

Occurances of names in articles from around 1850 - 1950 are held on a card index.  Not just BMD but obituaries and individual articles.

I have found the report of the death in a pub, a publican giving evidence at a murder trial and the report of a bankruptcy for various of  my wife's ancestors as well as BMD events.

All are referenced to the date of publication and can be viewed on microfilm

Northumberland / Cooper - North Shields around 1800
« on: Monday 21 June 04 23:34 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for the baptism of James Cooper who, according to the 1851 census, was born in North Shields around 1795

James married a Mary Ann Hart married in Christ Church, North Shields in 1826.

They had a son David Ions Cooper in 1831 who was baptised and married in the same Church although his son William David married in the Catholic Church.

I have not been able to find the baptism of James in North Shields or Tynemouth.  Any information greatfully received.

I have more recent info on this family if it is of use to anyone
