Erroneous posts were made about her by me in previous years.  However a primary document from All Saints Episcopalian Church, Philadelphia shows that by the late 1820’s Mary was a widow who baptized her 2 daughters, Richmul Jane and Alice Drusilla.  The Richmul name is a clue that perhaps this family was from Lancashire.

I do not know the maiden name of Mary and have found a handful of Woods men who died in Philadelphia between 1825 and 1830.  It’s doubtful how complete the records are, and the family may have lived in a surrounding county.

There does not appear to be an immigration record for Mary, and I don’t know whether she was married in England or in the United States.  It’s not apparent whether she was widowed in England or the US.

The only evidence I have of England is census information stating England as the country of origin for both of Richmul's parents.  The Lancashire link is purely speculative stemming from the name Richmul.  Not much to work with eh?

Richmul’s husband worked in the woolen mills around Conshohocken, PA and spent time in Delaware County doing the same.  I suspect that the Woods family worked in textiles in the Delaware Valley.

Any ideas?  I tried punching in some names for results at a Lancashire site, but was wondering if I might get lucky here.

Europe / Germany - Bohmwetsch
« on: Saturday 19 November 11 05:42 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone know anything about a Bohmwetsh family in Württemberg, Germany?  I have a great grandfather named Ludwig Bohmwetsch with a passenger record listing him as being from Zwinghausen, Württemberg (Baden-Württemberg), Germany.  The surname spelling appears to vary quite a bit.

Ludwig came to the US in 1891 through New York and settled in the Norristown/Conshohocken, PA  area, marrying an Ella Connor in 1894.  I've got census and immigration records for him, but that's it.  I have no idea who his parents were.

Lancashire / Richmul Jane Fisher and Mary Woods
« on: Friday 28 October 11 04:12 BST (UK)  »
From what I understand, Richmul and its variants are peculiar to Lancashire, specifically the Bury area.  I have any ancestor, Richmul Jane Fisher, whose parents immigrated in the 1790's to the United States, give or take a decade.

I don't know where her parents are buried, but she was buried with her husband William DeHaven, her children and a woman named Mary Woods, who could have been her mother remarried with a new last name.

Does anyone know of a Woods or Fisher family who had relatives who moved to the Philadelphia area of the United States?  I suspect the Fisher family came to work in the woollen mills, but not sure.

Thanks

Ireland / Patrick Connor

Is looking for Patrick Connor in Ireland like looking for John Smith in Kansas?

My great-great grandfather Patrick Connor lived most of his adult life in West Conshohocken, PA.  The census states he came from Ireland in the 1860's and his wife Annie, (maiden name unknown), in the 1850's.  I did find a John Conner in a neighboring borough in 1860 with a son Patrick, but they had immigrated earlier.  Any one out there know of any Connors from Ireland who moved to Montgomery County Pennsylvania?

Ireland / Alexander Armstrong and Rhoda Maxwell
« on: Friday 28 October 11 03:47 BST (UK)  »
Here's a shot in the dark I guess.  I'm looking for any information about Alexander Armstrong and his wife Rhoda Maxwell, but I don't know what county.  Their son, John Maxwell Armstrong came to PA via Canada, married Julia Armstrong, (maiden name unknown) and died in Philadelphia in 1914.

I recently found his death certificate.  John Maxwell Armstrong's son, John Carroll Armstrong,  named Rhoda and Alexander as John Maxwell Armstrong's Irish parents on the certificate.  I believe they were Presbyterian and probably from Antrim.

Their son lived in Bradford County PA during the 1870's and '80's as an oil producer, and may have owned an orange grove in FL.  Eventually his family settled in Philadelphia where he worked as a carpenter/builder.  I just learned his parents names a few weeks ago and hope to make some contacts.

Thanks

Ayrshire / John Barr of Beith and Sons
« on: Friday 28 October 11 03:28 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information about John Barr, (born c 1790), of Beith and his wife Jean Gilmour, (born c 1809).  He appears to have had four sons with Jean, namely Matthew, Francis, David and Allan, and three children with a previous wife, namely Janet, John and William.  His son Francis appears to have gone to Australia, but I'm not sure about the rest.  I think his son Allan was my great - great grandfather.

My Allan came to the US after being in Canada, and is listed in an 1861 Montreal census.  He was married to Christina Lamont, and may have been a gardener of some note.  He died in 1902 and had worked for a wealthy Quaker named T Wistar Brown in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA.  His children were John, Allan, Barbara, and Francis.
Thank you.

Scotland / Barr/Lamont
« on: Friday 28 October 11 03:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information about Allan Barr, husband of Christina Lamont, married in Rothesay, Bute 1856 where they later had a son John.  Their eldest child, Barbara, may have been born in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire.  They immigrated to Canada, and are found in the 1861 Montreal census.  A son, Francis, was born in Canada.  They appear to be in the Philadelphia area of the United States by 1863, having another son, Allan, around 1867. Allan and Christina are buried at St. Paul's Lutheran Graveyard in Ardmore, PA next to Christina's sister, Margaret Lamont, and Margaret's husband, Peter McCallum.

Allan appears to be the son of John Barr and Jane Gilmour of Beith, but I don't have any proof just yet.  Allan's brother Francis moved to Australia, but I don't know about the rest. There were two other brothers, David and Matthew, and half-siblings, Janet, John and William.  A descendent of Matthew indicated there was a a brother Allan who moved to Philadelphia and had worked as a gardener in Scotland.

Does anyone know anything about this Allan Barr and about the Barrs of Beith?  I'd like to know if they are connected and anything else about the family.  Thanks.
