Other Countries / Russian – help translation please
« on: Wednesday 25 November 15 12:57 GMT (UK)  »
I’m told Alexander DUL was Polish and was either born or baptized in Lublin in 1912,
which I believe was under Russian rule until 1915.
Can anyone help translate this certificate please?
Does it refer to Lublin? Or some other village or town?
Are parents named? Dates refer to…?
Many thanks…

Kincardineshire / origins of "Stephen's Mortification" Fetteresso and Dunnottar
« on: Sunday 30 August 15 11:56 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching the surname Stephen.... Anyone in Stonehaven know about this please?
Found in the Angus and Means Almanac 1846 - 1846:
STEPHEN'S MORTICATION
The Ministers of Fetteresso and Dunnottar, Trustees

A mortification I believe can be the disposing of lands for religious or charitable purposes.
Question: who was this particular Stephen?

Fife / Fotheringham in Leven 1790
« on: Monday 11 August 14 01:29 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me how these two Fotheringham men were related please?
Or anything about them?
DAVID FOTHERINGHAM of 'KIRKLAND BY LEVEN' is mentioned in a 1790 document about
ALEX FOTHERINGHAM of Links of Arduthie, STONEHAVEN, FETTERESSO, Kincardine who died
presumably the year before in 1789.
Searched, no records found so far for this Alex Fotheringham.
The doc also mentions his son Alexander, a pupil age unknown. No records found.
I have no other info. Hoping someone on the Fife boards will know which Fotheringham
branch lived at Kirkland by Leven (or Methil ?) in the late 1700's, early 1800's.
Thanks...

Kincardineshire / Fotheringham in STONEHAVEN, Longmoor, Lawson, Milne, Stephen
« on: Thursday 07 August 14 02:45 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone information on ALEX FOTHERINGHAM
who lived in LINKS OF ARDUTHIE, Stonehaven late 1700's?
In Sept 1790 there was a public sale of deceased Alex Fotheringham's moveables.
But I can find no death record, and have no idea of how old he was.
His son is mentioned briefly as Alexander Fotheringham Younger his Son, Pupil
(cannot find a birth for him either) and lists 'Tutors' (advisers/executors?) appointed to this son:
John LONGMOOR tenant, Cowie; John LAWSON, Baker in Stonehaven;
David FOTHERINGHAM at Kirkland by Leven (he must be a relative in Fife?)
and John MILNE, Writer in Stonehaven.
This handwritten doc  goes on to list what was sold and to whom.
It includes 'victual of the growth' (crops?) of Boggatyhead (which I discovered was farming
land that overlooked Dunnottar Castle) bought by John STEPHEN.

I'm wondering who Alex Fotheringham's parents, brothers and sisters were,
because I have a Jane Fotheringham who had several sons by husband John STEPHEN
(maybe the same John Stephen named in the above doc) - they lived in Links of Arduthie
around the same time, but I do not know her origins despite searching for several years.
I suspect she was related to Alex....

The newspaper article is about  a John Watson who in 1898 was Coxwain of the Crail Lifeboat.
Trying to discover the connection between  my family and this John Watson.

The Common Room / adopted and possibly not knowing?
« on: Thursday 18 July 13 01:31 BST (UK)  »
I have a first cousin who was adopted 1944 in Scotland as a baby. I have his original birth record. But he has not registered with Birthlink for contact with living relatives. I do not know his new name of course. He may be unaware that he was adopted. Or he may know but has chosen not to seek more information. Or he could be deceased. All I can do is include his original birth name in our family tree, and hope that he (or children if he married) decide to research their genealogy and wish to make contact.

But maybe someone can answer the following...?
I guess there would be nothing on an adopted child's 'new' or 'short' birth certificate which might make them suspect they were adopted. Would this certificate be sufficient for all future needs? If they ordered a replacement for any reason, would they be sent the 'full' certificate revealing  'adopted' on it?  Might my cousin's descendants some time in the future, if they were researching their tree, be able to discover their father was adopted?

Cannot discover wife Margaret's maiden name - any help appreciated:

In the 1871 census living at 43, St Domingo Road, Toxteth Park, Everton, Lancashire,
is John STEPHEN age 41 born Stonehaven, Kincardine, Scotland = b abt 1830
occupation Tallow Chandler and his wife Margaret age 42 born Durham England.= b abt 1829.

Cannot find a marriage in Scotland or England to discover Margaret’s maiden name. Nor their whereabouts (or deaths) after the 1871 census at Toxteth Park. Nor any children.
