Looking for any information on when the above photographic studio was trading in Leicester (in the hope that it may help to identify a photograph!).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Thatcham Parish Records
« on: Friday 12 June 20 18:31 BST (UK)  »

I have been researching my WASTIE (and variants) ancestors for many years - they are mainly from Oxfordshire, but occasionally from Berkshire.

Courtesy of an entry in The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names, I have come across a Thomas WASTEE (sic) who had two children baptised in Thatcham  - Thomas in 1629 and Jane in 1634.

Can anyone find any references to Thomas Snr., or any other WASTEE/WASTIE entries.

Many thanks for any help.

Norfolk / BALLARD Burial
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 20:49 BST (UK)  »

Seeking any information regarding the death/burial of James Alderton BALLARD.  I don't know his birth/baptism details, but he married in Gorleston in 1797 and had nine children between 1797 and 1812.

His will was written in September 1817 and probate was granted in November 1822.  His will refers to him as "mariner" of Gorleston.

I'm just returning to my research on this individual after a gap of a good many years and have found some (very!) rough notes in my file to the effect that he may have been serving on board the revenue cutter HMS Ranger which went down with all 29 crew off Happisburgh on 13th October 1822.  My notes show a burial date of 22nd October 1822 - but no location - and that his eldest son (also James Alderton BALLARD) may also have been a member of the crew.  Unfortunately, I don't have a note of any sources for the above!

If anyone can help, I would be most grateful.

For a number of years I've been corresponding with someone in Australia - we're both researching the same (very unusual) surname.

His maternal grandmother and my maternal grandmother both share this surname.

Tracing this surname back through our respective trees (three generations in his case and four in mine), we come to two individuals living in neighbouring London parishes and with the same occupation.  There are also several other "circumstantial" connections between these two.

Whilst I've been able to continue tracing my direct line of this surname back to the late 16th century, he has been unable to take his line any further as we can't find any details of his 3 x great-grandfather's parentage.

However, given the rarity of the surname, we both feel that it is highly likely that we both descend from the same family and I'm wondering if there's any sort of DNA/genetic testing that would help us to prove/disprove this?

Any guidance would be most welcome - thank you.

Northamptonshire / Parish Records at NRO
« on: Thursday 13 July 17 12:09 BST (UK)  »

The NRO website used to include a (very useful!) page listing all the parish registers they held, together with dates covered for baptisms, marriages and burials.

However, when I last went to have a look at this it seems to have disappeared from the website.  Can anyone find it and post a link???

Many thanks.

Does anyone know if these parish registers can be found anywhere online (particulary interested in late 18th century entries).

Thanks for any help.

Technical Help / Inability to "search" on Ancestry
« on: Monday 01 February 16 12:48 GMT (UK)  »

Have just returned to the Ancestry website after a break of a couple of months.

It now seems that whatever dataset I want to search (census, BMDs, military etc. etc.), all I'm getting is a "browse" option.  Have tried every which way of accessing the relevant search page, but with no luck!

Help much appreciated.  Thanks.

London and Middlesex / Camberwell (Non-Conformist?) Burial Records
« on: Tuesday 04 August 15 21:20 BST (UK)  »

Seeking a burial record for Richard WASTIE.  His death certificate records that he died on 04 MAR 1849 at St. George's Terrace, Wells Street, Camberwell.

His wife Catherine (nee WISEMAN) was buried at St. Leonards, Shoreditch, in 1839.  I have checked the online registers for this church and there's no sign of Richard.

I believe that Richard may have been a non-conformist - his children were all baptised at the Providence Chapel, Tichfield Street, St. Marylebone, in the early 1800s, and I'm still unable to find any record of his birth/baptism (around 1773 and not in Surrey - according to his death certificate and 1841 census record respectively).

Any help in finding any information about his burial would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Gloucestershire Completed Lookup Requests / Minchinhampton Parish Records
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 21:45 BST (UK)  »
James WASTIE was buried at Minchinhampton on 04 FEB 1828. The records suggests that he was only around one year old.

I would like to know if there are any further details with the burial record (names of parents, perhaps?) or if there is a corresponding baptism record in the parish.

Any help very much appreciated.
