John Harris married Catherine Banigan/Bannigan/Banagher etc poss late 1830s early 1840s had three children John Frederick Harris, Linsey/Lindsey Harris and Catherine  B Harris (who later married Ross Ramage of Shanreagh T/L in 1870)

JF Harris may have lived in the US, Linsey died there (PA) in 1880. Catherine Harris Ramage lived in NZ from 1884-86.

Catherine Harris, his wife, died after two years of paralysis in Moneyrannel in 1873 aged 70.  He reported her death saying he was a labourer.

There are several possibilities I am looking at

1   Died in Strabane in 1881 and a Thomas Harris has reported it. John Harris  is shown as Married but by this stage he would have been a widower.

Problem: No relations called Thomas Harris are known in this family (yet)

With the thought that he may have gone to the States where his two sons are (one definitely in Philadelphia and the other in ?????Kentucky)

On 1880 census with a daughter Mary Jane Watson

2   Dies later in 1880

or

3    dies in New York  in an insane Asylum in 1889...

With the idea that the simplest solution is usually the most likely (Occams razor) my thought is that he has died in Ireland somewhere.  His daughter lived in nearby, (to Moneyrannel),  Shanreagh townland until the mid 1880s when she emigrated to NZ.

I had thought he was in the army (57th Foot) and from Moneymore/Moymucklemurray Town Land but have had to revise this.  I still think there may be a link to that townland as the name Linsey/Lindsay Harris does come from there and a person of that name was baptised with the note from the Vicar 'this child is a bastard'

I did start a thread on the L/derry board but apart from advice that my links to the Army were incorrect there have been no other clues.

Other ideas
His gt grandson here in NZ was named John Harris Da(h)m and was known as Jack.

In Philadelphia when Linsey Harris (the son of John Harris) was living there there were two Irish Linsey/Lindsay Harris's. Perhaps I should follow up the other Lindsay Harris a little more to see if there are clues.

I have several 'international men of mystery' as my Mum would call them, and he is one.
He is my gt gt Grandfather.

I would love to find out when & where he died, & is buried. I would welcome any clues/advice to where I could search now.

John Harris was born c 1807 in Desertlyn and enlisted in the 57th regt of foot in 1825 and served until 1842 after a medical discharge.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Changing the time shown on posts to NZ time
« on: Tuesday 18 May 21 10:50 BST (UK)  »
I find it confusing/irritating to have UK, ie BST I presume, time shown on the posts as the time they are posted.

Do fellow southern hemisphere posters know a way of changing the time to reflect local times please?

I have looked for a settings button but cannot find one.

Derry (Londonderry) / How old is an adult for an adult baptism in the Catholic Church?
« on: Saturday 02 January 21 01:59 GMT (UK)  »
My Gt gt Grandmother was born Catherine Banigan (& variations) and married John Harris. She died aged 70 in Limavady in 1873.

Her daughter, my Gt Grandmother Catherine Harris Ramage was born in 1844 (we believe) .  In 1870 she married Ross Ramage at Ballykelly COI church.   She died in NZ in 1886 and her gravestone says she was 42.

One of the  children of Catherine Harris Ramage, Catherine born 1874 (Limavady) was known as Catherine Buchan, Buchanan Ramage. One of the nieces of Catherine Harris Ramage, another Catherine was in  born 1862 (Limavady) daughter of CHR brother Lin(d)sey Harris was baptised Catherine Bamingham Harris

After searching the Bamingham, Birmingham, Buchan, Buchanan etc names I have now come back to the Banigan name.

From the 1851 on English census I have found a Catherine Ban(n)igan born 1806? who is married to Francis Emmerson/Ammerson and living in places like Preston and Bolton in Lancs though born in IRL.

I could not make any connection to Co Londonderry until I found an
1844 link to two 'adult' baptisms carried out at St Columbs Longtower on 3/3/1844.

These are for William Emmerson and Mary Emmerson.
Parents are Francis Emmerson and Catherine Bannigan.
They have sponsors Catherine Duffy and Catherine Leal,Liel, Lill.
According to the various census records these children were Ann 8 in 1851 census so born 1843 and William 14 in 1851 census so born 1837.

I then found another baptism on 30/5/1844 at St Columbs for Ann Emmerson with parents Francis E.... and Catherine Banagan with sponsor being Catherine Duffy.   This is not marked as an adult baptism. She was shown as 6 on the 1851 English census.

My queries are:
is there an age by which baptisms are to take place in the RC church?
and
so after this age has past is the convention that the baptism is an adult one?

And the $64,000 question
Is there any significance about the choice of St Columbs Longtower?   I can understand bringing children 'home' to be baptised in a home church but whose home church would be more likely - the  father's or mother's?

Thanks in advance.

Could this photo be dated please.  It came from an old album of my grandmother's that seemed to only have photos of her generation and before ie the few photos of my grandmothers children are in other boxes and not in this album. I think perhaps it was started by my gt grandmother Catherine Harris Ramage from Limavady Co Derry who emigrated to NZ with husband and family in 1885/86. The album has pictures taken in Limavady,  Belfast, Glasgow, Dublin with a few in Auckland NZ of gt aunts & uncles.

He has a long cutaway coat, some sort of bow tie with an umbrella? and a top hat.  Would the brolly and top hat be props or would he have been wearing/carrying them?

Any idea how old the subject would be?

The corners seem to be more cut-off (in the photo) than gently rounded. Whiskers and longer coat may be clues! The coat sleeves seem to be very full from elbow down to wrist.  I cannot see for sure but he looks like he is wearing a bow tie.

John Mack as a photographer I have been able to trace from 1885 (but probably earlier)  to at least 1901 (census)  when the 69 year John Mack was still in business with several of his children.

I wrote the name and number on it. Naughty I know but in early 1980s we had them professionally photographed and needed to know where to put them back and also to record what my mother said as we took them out...as this could have been a clue.

Any ideas how old the subject is?

I am looking for the date of death of Mary Callaghan.  She was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Bloomfield (who were married in 1864) and married Samuel Callaghan at Parish Church of Aghanloo in on 13/7/1883 stating she was of full age. She and Samuel appear in the 1901 & 1911 censuses living in Limavady.  Samuel Callaghan died in 1918 in Limavady. We know that Mary was alive in 1916 (from her daughter's application to marry in Philadelphia) and the death notice of her son in 1934 (also in the US) states that he is the son of 'Mary Callaghan and the late Samuel Callaghan' leading us to suspect that she died after 1934.

What is the best way of finding when she died apart from looking at indexes at GRONI (?) which is not possible as one searcher in is New Zealand the other in the US.  I have looked at a link to online British newspapers but not all the Northern Irish papers seem to be there.
We are hoping that the death certificate may give us further clues as to when she was born as we have not established that definitively.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

I am looking for Catherine Harris born May 1862 who emigrated to PA with her parents Lindsey and Mary Anne Callaghan Harrs from Limavady in Co Londonderry Ireland in 1865.  I have found her on 1870 & 1800 Philadelphia census.

I have found a Kate Harris (aged 28) with John Mcnamarah in Jersey City New Jersey and they have a female child on 23/8/1891.

I have found a Catherine Harris (aged 32)  with Michael Heany (aged 38) in Newark New Jersey and their daughter Katherine M Heany born 18/8/1894.  Possibly K M Heany became Marie Cavanaugh of Philadelphia. A Catherine Heany is with that family in 1920 census.  An earlier census has her husband as Anthony Heaney.

Also I have found Michael Heany/Heney/Heaney and Kate/Katie Harris in Newark having Michael 23/5/1894, Ellen 29/7/1897  and James 16/12/1899. This couple are showing up on records as being  10 years younger appx than Catherine Harris & Michael Heany.

Is anyone looking for this family as well?
How can I find out if the three lots of Catherine Harris, Kate Harris and katie harris with the Mcnamara and Heaney husbands are one and the same or not.

Derry (Londonderry) / Benjamin Irwin buried Old Drummond graveyard
« on: Wednesday 21 March 12 06:06 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across the burial of Benjamin Irwin who died on 21/8/1831 . His address is given as Derrybeg, parish of Drumachose and plot 2/1 Old Drummond graveyard.

He is the husband of Mary and I think an ancestor of Benjamin Irwin who farmed at Shanreagh at the time of Griffiths.  There are several Benjamin Irwins from around Ballykelly/Ballyspallan/Shanreagh and I think they may be  related to Ann Irwin (though there may be Donaghmore Tyrone connections here as well) who married Isaac Ramsey(Ramage of Shanreagh) in 1843.  They had a son Erwin/Irwin Ross Ramage (known as Ross) who was born 3/8/1844 and died in NZ 4/9/1905

Have looked for Derrybeg but no luck so far. Does Derrybeg still exist?
Is the Old Drummond graveyard at the old Drumachose church, the one in ruins on way to Coleraine (I think). If it is not this one does anyone know where the Old Drummond graveyard is?  Would plot 2/1 still be in existence?
