Midlothian / Lookup request - Cockpen MIs - Carse
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 11:16 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,
Does any kind soul have access to the Cockpen MIs, or those for Newbattle or Carrington? I'm trying to find anything on Carse (Cars, Cass, Cas, Kas etc) families in the 17th and 18th centuries, and there might - just - be something in either of these parishes. But as with any MIs it's a long shot.

Associated names were Nicolson, Fowls/Foulis, Douglas.

Many thanks!

Louth / Michael Lynch in Drogheda
« on: Sunday 22 August 10 13:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Returning to my Irish connections - I've found that a Michael Lynch, born around 1794, is likely to have been from Drogheda.

He emigrated to Dundee in Scotland, and I have his burial record (1834, aged 42) which gives his birthplace as Drogheda. He was married to Margaret Haughey or Haghey and it's likely the marriage was before he came to Scotland. They had a child born in Dundee in 1830 and baptised in the Catholic church there, and there may have been an earlier child baptised in December 1823, putting the emigration before that. (The mother's name for the 1823 birth is given as Margaret Haray.)

I haven't found Margaret's death so don't have a record of where she was from, but it's possible she too was from Drogheda.

Please can anybody advise how to go about finding him?

Antrim / Cullybackey church records
« on: Monday 21 July 08 13:42 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,
Is there anybody who has access to Cullybackey Presbyterian records, or can suggest a way to access these?  It's likely to be the church which was the precursor of the Cunningham Memorial church - apparently these do exist and are ref MIC1P/88 at PRONI.

I'm looking for the marriage of Robert McLaughlin and Elizabeth or Eliza Russell, for which I've a date of 24 Dec 1835. There are various dates for the births of children. Robert and Elizabeth were both born around 1817, and I have their parents' names... in short, there's a lot I could do, if only I had access!

If there's any kind soul visiting PRONI who'd like to do some extra looking up, I can give you all the information that I have. Oh, how I wish these records were online!

Hi,
I have McLaughlins in my family, and Russells and McKays, from the Craigs/Cullybackey area. In the Griffiths Valuations index I've found the following entries with the spelling 'Mc Loughlin':

Surname      First Name      Townland      Parish      County
Mc Loughlin   William            Craigs                Craigs   Antrim
Mc Loughlin   Robert            Craigs                 Craigs   Antrim

And several for Russell including
Russell         Anne                  Craigs                Craigs     Antrim
Russell         Adam                 Craigs                Craigs     Antrim
Russell         James                 Dreen                Craigs     Antrim

And one for McKay:
Mc Kay          Eliza                 Craigs                Craigs     Antrim

While I don't know if either of these are 'my' McLaughlins etc, it's possible. A Robert McLaughlin moved with his family to Scotland, at some point before 1871, and I've various bits of information on the family from then on, the other names coming from his death certificate and that of his wife Elizabeth Russell. (His daughter Elizabeth was my g-grandmother.)

Is there any kind soul, please, who can help with this one?

Stirlingshire / Muiravonside 1841 census - anybody?
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 13:27 BST (UK)  »
I have a couple of pages from the SP Muiravonside census. They include Ann and Robert Stewart (Spirit Dealer), and their son Alexander (4 months), living in Linlithgow Bridge, on p 7 of the census record for that area.  However I'd have expected to find Ann's mother, Mary Fisher or McCulloch, and Ann and Robert's elder child, Mary Ann, aged about 2. I don't know if at this time Ann's father, William Fisher, was still alive or staying with his family.  There's also Ann's brother William Fisher, who would have been around 23 at the time of this census, hence possibly recorded as 20.

Does anybody have access to this census who could look on the other pages of Linlithgow Bridge entries?  I think that, if they are there, the names may have been blurred or mis-transcribed, as I haven't found them through a search.

They may, of course, have been visiting elsewhere...

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Linlithgow parish records
« on: Saturday 11 February 06 19:31 GMT (UK)  »
Does anybody have access to Linlithgow parish records who could check a couple of entries for me? I'm trying to find information on Robert McCulloch and Euphemia Gillies and their family. They married in Linlithgow 20 May 1744 - I only have index entries, don't have access to the OPR just now..

A lot of my mother's family seems to go back to Linlithgow area. I have William McCulloch, buried in Linlithgow churchyard, died 1812, mason and Innkeeper at Linlithgow Bridge (technically just over the Avon into Stirlingshire). His daughter Mary married William Fisher, a gentleman's servant at Hopetoun House, and possibly William F. helped run the Inn. Mary was innkeeper still in the 1851 census (again, just over the border, on the other side of the bridge over the Avon..)

William, born 1755, seems to have been son of Robert McCulloch and Euphemia Gillies, of Linlithgow.

Mary's son William Fisher married Margaret Whyte, from a Linlithgow family - I don't know much about them and would like to know more. Anyone have information on any of these people?

Stirlingshire / Muiravonside - Bridge Inn, Fisher and McCulloch
« on: Saturday 07 January 06 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
I'm interested in the Bridge Inn, also possibly called Avonbridge Inn, at Linlithgow Bridge in Muiravonside. In the 1851 census it was run by Mary McCulloch. In the 1861 census it was run by her daughter Ann Fisher and son-in-law Robert Stewart and. And back in 1812 (when Mary married William Fisher) it was run by Mary's father William McCulloch.

Does anyone have information on these  people or on the Inn? It is interesting that Mary continued to be known as Mary McCulloch. She and William Fisher had two children, Ann b. 1813 and William b. 1817 - I am descended from William.
