The Common Room / Letters NWC as part of plot number?
« on: Wednesday 11 January 17 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows what the letters NWC after a plot number means?
I have come across a burial record with plot number 380NWC, block 10. I have a few family members buried in this same block, and their plot numbers don't have any letter(s) after them, so it doesn't appear to be the standard way of numbering plots.

I'm sure it is something obvious. I know at least one of the 3 people in this plot were cremated - does it identify this somehow?

Thanks in advance :)

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Henry Darnell Morgan
« on: Thursday 05 March 15 02:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm hoping some lovely person can help me with this guy. I am after one piece of information from a more in depth baptism record for him than the one I have been able to locate.

Name:    Henry Darnell Morgan
Gender:    Male
Christening Date:    24 Apr 1842
Christening Place:    SAINT LEONARDS,SHOREDITCH,LONDON,ENGLAND
Birth Date:    06 Jan 1842
Father's Name:    Henry Morgan
Mother's Name:    Eliza

I can see the baptism record on another site, but I am unable to view it to check for the info I'm after.

What I am hoping someone could find out for me is the occupation (if listed) for his father Henry. I'm crossing my fingers that it matches with other information I have found, so that I can finally make a link I have been after for ages.

I would be extremely grateful if there is someone who can help with this.
Thanks in advance,

New Zealand Completed Requests / Henry John Morgan: London to Victoria to Christchurch
« on: Wednesday 25 February 15 22:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm hoping someone has Henry John Morgan in their tree, or one of his children, and can help piece together the family with me. This will likely be a lengthy post, so apologies, but there is a lot to get down.

Henry John Morgan was born c1862 in London (place of birth recorded on his burial record) and died 9 November 1909 in Christchurch.
He married Jane Elizabeth Fitzer c1881, who was also born in London c1860. After Henry's death, Jane remarried to Walter William Pike in 1916, she died in Timaru 16 July 1924.

From what I have found, they had (at least) 3 children born in the London area between 1881 and 1889.
1. "First Son" Morgan - who may have died before 1916 as he was not recorded on the obituary for his brother who died in 1916. I don't know his name, but the obituary for this brother states that he is the "second son" of Henry and Jane, so my assumption is that there was one born before him.

2. Caroline Maria Morgan - c1883/84. She married Robert Briton Wilson in Christchurch in 1909.

3. Henry Charles Morgan ("second son") - c1889. He died 6 March 1916 in Christchurch.

I have then found the family in Victoria, Australia with the following 8 children:
1. Lucy Jane Morgan - 1890-1890 (died at 5 months old)
2. Edith Morgan - 1891
3. Frederick George/John Morgan - 1893-1894 (He is recorded as Frederick George for his birth, but Frederick John for his death)
4. Adeline May Morgan - 12 December 1894 - 28 August 1972 (died in Timaru). Adeline married Francis Henry Bayliss in 1916 in Christchurch. She is buried in Timaru with her mother.
5. Alfred Edward Morgan - 1896. He married Christina Sangster Butterworth in 1925 in Ashburton. (Christina's brother married one of Alfred's sisters).
6. Ernest Arthur Morgan - 1898.
7. Ada Alice Morgan - 1900. She married William Hamilton Oswald in 1919, and died in NZ in 1969.
8. Martha Lilian Morgan - 3 June 1901. She married Albert Henry James Barnes in 1920 and died in NZ in 1983.

I have found brief birth records online for the above 8 children that show their parents to be Henry John Morgan and Jane Elizabeth Fitzer.

And then they come to NZ and have a few more children:
1. Harry Walter Morgan (my great grandfather) - 3 Feb 1903 - 14 Jan 1978. Born and died in Christchurch. He married Agnes Tod Martin 29 October 1929.
2. Lucy Jane Morgan - 26 May 1905 - 3 July 1992. She married Alfred Ernest Butterworth (brother of Christina Sangster Butterworth) in 1926.
3. Eileen Edna Morgan - 1907 - 4 June 1981. She married Frederick George Britt 16 June 1927, and both are buried in Wellington.

I can't find passenger lists to show the family traveling from London to Victoria (which must have been around 1889 and 1890 to tie in with the children's births) or from Victoria to Christchurch (between 1901 and 1903, again to fit with births).
So I am hoping that someone recognises one of these names. There may have been more children born in London, but as of yet I haven't found any that I am confident with.

Thanks for reading! Any suggestions on my next step would be much appreciated :)

Staffordshire / Machin and Sumner
« on: Wednesday 05 December 12 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to piece together my Machin and Sumner connections. I have bits of information, but nothing seems to be gelling and I'm hoping someone might have a bit more information that could help.

I have James Sumner (1801-1881) who married Ann Machin (c1806) in Gnosall, Staffordshire on Apr 26 1824.
I have found census records for this couple, and in 1841 and 1851 a niece and nephew (Ann and John Cork) are living with them. I have found a marriage between Ellen Machin and James Cork in Gnosall (May 9 1822), the assumption being that Ellen is Ann's sister.
I don't have parents for Ann and Ellen Machin, just an approximate birth date for Ann.

In 1841 James and Ann Sumner are living with the Cork children in Swynnerton, with a William Machin (b.1751) and Mary Wildblood (b.1781). I believe that this is Mary Machin who married Ralph Wildblood in 1793 (Newcastle under Lyme). Apparently the parents of this Mary Machin are John and Elizabeth).

I am hoping to find a connection between Mary Wildblood and William Machin, that would then also connect them to Ann and Ellen Machin (who became Ann Sumner and Ellen Cork).
I am confident that these are my ancesters, as also living with them is James Sumner's cousin William Sumner (b1812).

To further complicate matters, another first cousin of James and William Sumner married another Machin girl.
John Sumner (b.1799) married Dinah Machin (1799-1876), again in Gnosall on Oct 9 1826. I don't have any other information for Dinah, although I did find a baptism for a Dinah Machin (Feb 23 1792, Ashley, Staffordshire, parents William and Eleanor).

I have been pretty unsuccessful in linking any of these Machin people together, so if anyone knows of something that might be helpful, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Crista

(I apologise for the length of the post, I wanted to get as much 'known' info out there)

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Robert and Mary Piercy
« on: Wednesday 27 June 12 00:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am having real trouble finding this couple before 1861. Robert Piercy and Mary Jarvis were both born in Hull, Yorkshire, c1802 and c1806 respectively. They married in 1824 in Hull, and then moved to the London/Middlesex area. I have found them in 1861 living in Bromley, with one child Emma born in "Limehouse, Middlesex" in 1844. But before then, no sign of them.
Robert was a ship carpenter in 1861 and then recorded as a shipwright in 1871. Would it be possible that the family were off at sea in the earlier years? And if so, where would I look to find this sort of information?
If anyone can find this family, I would be very grateful. I am looking for more children, as I assume marrying in 1824 and having one daughter in 1844 indicates more children were born.

Thanks in advance,
Crista

Cambridgeshire / Ell family
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 19:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find information about 2 separate Ell family members, who I'm hoping will be related to each other somehow.

First: John Ell b1731 Graveley, Cambs, who married Elizabeth Sumpter in 1760 in Graveley.
IGI gives Stephen and Sarah Ell as his parents, and there is a brother Stephen b1732. Marriage records for Stephen and Sarah (Passeler) say they married in 1729 in Graveley. Sarah was born 1710 in Cambs to John Passeler and Elizabeth Covell.

Second: Jane Ell b1760 approx. The only birth record I can find that is close in date is for 1763 in Bedfordshire, father William. I have seen other trees listing her parents as William Ell and Martha Tall, who married in 1762 in Cambs. William Ell was born in 1743 in Graveley.

And this is where I'm hoping to make a connection between these 2 groups of people.
William Ell was born to Stephen and Ann, with siblings Elizabeth, Thomas, Stephen and Charles, all born between 1736 and 1740. I'm wondering if Ann is the second wife of Stephen (after Sarah), making John and William half brothers?

Jane Ell married Edward Waldock in 1782 in Ashwell, Herts. There seems to be a lot of intermarriage between the Ell, Sumpter and Waldock families, so its not a massive stretch to think these people are all related, but I'm after some confirmation.

Do any of these names ring any bells? I would really appreciate any information.

Thanks in advance,
Crista

Warwickshire / Elizabeth Shakepeare (married Edward Morgan 1678)
« on: Tuesday 31 January 12 22:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to find information about Elizabeth Shakespeare who married into my Morgan family. Its proving very difficult, and very frustrating!
So far all I know is that they were married in Henley in Arden September 6 1678, and that a parish record of the marriage states that Elizabeth is "of Knowle". Not that helpful!
They had 4 children that I know of: Thomas 1679, Edward 1680, Elizabeth 1683 and Robert 1698 all baptised in Tamworth except Robert who was baptised in Bickenhill.

If anyone has any information about this Elizabeth I would be very grateful. Or even just a link to somewhere that I might be able to find some more out myself would be handy.

Thanks in advance :)

Herefordshire / Children of Thomas and Delariviere Morgan?
« on: Sunday 29 January 12 02:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has any information regarding the children of this couple?

Thomas Morgan b.1604 d.1679 and Delariviere Cholmondeley, daughter of John Cholmondeley.

From a search on IGI I have found 5 children: John, Hester, Delariviere, Annabella, and Cholmley all born in the early 1620s in Kinnersley, Hereford, with the exception of Cholmley who was born in 1655. (I am hoping to find a son Edward born c1658 to fit with the rest of my research). IGI records their marriage as c1649, so it is possible that either the birth dates for the children are wrong, or the marriage date is.

Thomas was born in Wales, and a google search revealed he was knighted later on in life. His wife came from a well-to-do family. Apparently they had 9 sons, so I still have 7 to track down, if this is correct. One may be called Lewis, as it seems Thomas's father was a Lewis Morgan.

I'm hoping someone has this lot in their tree, I'd love to be able to confirm my family connection to this family.

Thanks in advance :)

Gloucestershire / Thomas Wicks Rodway
« on: Friday 06 January 12 01:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Does anyone have any information about Thomas Wicks Rodway? More specifically, his wife? I found today that he apparently married a Frances Latham, who according to the source, is the brother of John Latham from Hatherop. I'm trying to trace family members related to John Latham and want to confirm that this Frances is in fact his sister before I get to involved in it.
All I can find on Frances is that she came from a family of innkeepers.

Thanks in advance,
Crista
