I'm trying to make sense of my DNA matches, several indicate that one of my RYDER family from Newcastle emigrated or temporarily landed in Australia, particularly Victoria state, maybe Melbourne area.

The Ryders had arrived in Newcastle upon Tyne about 1846, William RYDER b about 1810 in Heston Middlesex was a soldier from Woolwich Barracks, he married Elizabeth TURNER in Sheffield in 1831.

They had 7 children in Ireland, Woolwich Barracks and finally the last in Newcastle upon Tyne. There the family stayed as William was invalided out of the Army.

(My direct ancestor, their son Henry Joseph RYDER got really confused with his surname when he started having children in 1854 in Westgate, Newcastle. He had 13 children, sometimes their surname was RYDER, sometimes it was TURNER (his mother's maiden surname), or even both).

So I'm looking for any RYDER's or TURNER's from Newcastle who might have been in Victoria Australia at some time after 1870. They could be linked with families called Riddell or Tytler or Nicholson.

Hoping for a clue, clever sleuths

Just bought a new laptop with nothing installed yet.

If I want to take up the special offer upgrade price on FTM2019, will I have to install my present FTM2017 and upgrade to that? Or is the FTM2019 upgrade the FULL programme?

London and Middlesex / Harefield IGI batch numbers?
« on: Sunday 12 December 21 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
I cannot find the Harefield batch numbers for FamilySearch. I'm not even sure they are in Middlesex as other sources put Harefield in Buckinghamshire (NLS map).

Can anyone tell me the batch numbers please?

The Common Room / Familysearch website clunky and unreliable
« on: Tuesday 29 December 20 21:05 GMT (UK)  »
I've been looking for miscellaneous records on Familysearch and after drilling down through several menus and ticking the box for Records Online (NOT those is Family History Centre) all I get are the records you can only see in Family History Centres. Why doesn't the filter work properly?

I don't want to reinvent the wheel here so ....

I've been using Family Tree Maker for donkey's years but I don't think it will do what I want it to. I want to make a large family tree of my direct ancestors and drop their photos into boxes. (I keep my photos separate from my tree) Name and lifespan added. I don't want to use Ancestry.com or FamilySearch. I want something decorative in the end, not just a chart.

Any ideas?

World War Two / WW2 - wounded in Italy March 1945
« on: Wednesday 01 April 20 15:16 BST (UK)  »
My father was wounded in Italy during WW2. From his military file he was  "wounded (BC) 3 Mar 1945     W3016     at?   13 Mar 1945". He told me it had happened as he was crouching over a field wireless and got shrapnel in his back and side. His brother told me he recuperated on light duties guarding Italian POW for about a year. But in 1955 back in England, he had more shrapnel taken out of his side, they were very jagged pieces of rusty metal so I think they must have been from a shell.

He had been transferred to the 6th Batt. of the Cheshire Regiment on 11th June 1944, from the Northumberland Fusiliers.

From several sources, I think he was in the far north of Italy by this time but I'm not sure. The Imperial War Museum book about WW2 in Italy misses out any happenings around 3 Mar 1945.

Could anyone tell me what the Cheshires were doing between June 1944-March 1945? And where they were in Italy?

Technical Help / Is it still worth downloading Gedstar app to my phone?
« on: Sunday 19 January 20 06:41 GMT (UK)  »
Years ago when I had a Palm Pilot, I used the Gedstar app to view my family tree on the move and without an internet connection.

Now I have a new phone with bells and whistles and I've thought about an app for family tree use. Gedstar still gets a very good review but their website has a flash about

IMPORTANT NOTICE!
For various technical reasons, there will be no further development on the GedStar Pro products. However, the current versions will remain available as long as they continue to work on both the Windows and Android platforms.
Thank you for your support over the years on our journey from Palm Pilots to the latest Android devices!

So is it still worth using this app? Or is there a successor to Gedstar that delivers the same goods?
