The Common Room / Labelling Photographs
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone
could somebody please advise if there is a safe way to write names etc on the back of old black and white photographs.
I am currently moving my photos out of a film over photo album into acid free pockets, but am at a bit of a loss how to label them, as my Mum had written names etc on the writing space in the old album.
Thank you
Gill

The Common Room / Late registration of birth
« on: Tuesday 22 August 23 16:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I'm a bit puzzled as to why a birth which took place in November 1851 wasn't registered until the following May 1852.  I don't believe that fines were in place during that period, so just curious as to why the family decided to register 6 months later.

Also, just to try and put some  context into registration, does anybody know how it took place?  I know today we make appointments etc, but did an individual just walk into a registrars office, did the registrar come to them? and did people in small towns/villages have to go further afield to register?

Many thanks for any comments on this

Technical Help / Roots Magic to Family Historian
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 16:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone
I seem to use two programmes from time to time, Roots magic 9 and Family Historian, as I can never make my mind up as to which one I prefer.
I haven't touched either for a while, and have just put a lot of information onto Roots magic, but having looked at Family Historian again, I think it is easier to navigate my way round.
My question is, I seem to have gone completely blank as to how to transfer information from RM to FH, without manually inputting everything.
Please can I have the step by step version. ;)
Many thanks

Technical Help / Looking for new laptop
« on: Friday 29 April 22 14:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
so I have had my Acer Aspire windows 10 laptop for around 7 years now and it is beginning to be a bit slower with loading programmes etc.
I'd like to get a new one now, but would like some advice please.  I would probably stick with another Acer for familiarity, and would like it to be Windows 11, so my main questions are:  Should I get a Windows 11 pre installed, more expensive, but perhaps easier than downloading it myself?
And also, my current laptop has 1TB of storage, of which I have only used 180 GB of storage, so  should I stick with a 1TB storage or settle for a cheaper version with 256GB storage?
I would just like to add that I mainly use my laptop for Family History software programmes of Roots Magic and Family Historian, of which I am in the ongoing process of scanning and attaching photographs too, and family history documents, and surfing the web, microsoft word etc.
I am certainly not techy minded at all, and am looking for a budget of around £500-£600.
I would appreciate anybody's input here. Thanks in advance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / photo scanner
« on: Saturday 09 April 22 20:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I have a lot of old black and white photographs to scan, some dating back to the first world war era, but just have a basic printer, scanner, copier.
I am wondering if I should buy a new scanner, or a new all in one, as I only want to scan them once, and with the best possible quality that I can get.
If anybody has any ideas or recommendations, I would be really grateful.
Thanks

« on: Sunday 13 March 22 18:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
can anybody tell me if it is possible for a relative to obtain a National Service Medal, and if so, where would I need to go for this?
Thanks in advance

Occupation Interests / cordwainer ( Shoemaker )
« on: Monday 06 December 21 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone
My Dad's family were Cordwainers, ( shoemakers and repairers ) going back a long way.  I would love to get my Dad a book about the history of the trade for Christmas, but have been unable to find anything.
Does anybody know of any books on this subject?
Many thanks

The Common Room / Circus Employee - Bertram Mills Circus?
« on: Monday 21 June 21 13:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, this may not be in the correct board, but here goes..
I wonder if somebody might be able to point me in the right direction for finding out information of circus employees, possibly of the above named circus.
Ruby Beaumont  allegedly worked in a circus as a lady who was sawn in half. There is also some family talk that she may have been involved in Houdini's act at some point.
The years that I am looking for would be around 1925 to 1931, so not a huge range.
I would love to be able to find something out about this if anybody can help!
Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Alice Beaumont - Double Birth Registration
« on: Saturday 07 March 20 21:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all
I have a bit of a puzzle here - Alice Beaumont was born on 8 April 1850 in Halifax and the birth was registered on 11 May 1850.
Alice was then baptised on 30 January 1851 along with her sister Ann Elizabeth in Halifax.
I then have another birth registration for Alice, the same family, born on 16 November 1851, but the birth was not registered until 19 April 1852.
Common sense would tell me that the first Alice died young, but I have not been able to find a death for her at all.  I have the birth certificates for both of these 'Alice's'
Just to add to the confusion, I have never found a birth certificate for their brother John Armitage Beaumont who was baptised on 4/5/1852 in Halifax, and his birth is listed as 16 November 1851, the same as this second Alice!

I would be grateful if anyone has any ideas on this one!!
Many thanks
Gill
