Hello Everybody,  I'd like some help with this photo of two girls.  They are possibly part of my family who lived in the villages between Barnsley and Rotherham in South Yorkshire.  Most of the family were skilled to semi skilled working class, Coal Miners, Engine Tenders, Foundry Workers and the like.  The aircraft on the back of the postcard looks like a Bleriot XI (though the rear empannage  looks different to photographs of the real plane) which flew the English channel in 1909.
Are the dresses of that period?  Were the dresses likely to have been for special occasions?
Thanks in advance

Dear All
This is Margaret Brown my 3 X Great Grandmother.
She lived from 1814 (approx)-1906 in the Scottish Borders.
She was married to William Brown, a successful woollen manufacturer
He died in 1894 and left her amongst other things an amount of money to buy her mournings.
Is she wearing them?
Does her dress tie up with the death of her husband?
If you could let me know what gives you the clues to the date of the photograph

Dear All
Can anybody advise a date for this photo.  Birth Dates are 1851 for Gideon and 1854 for Maggie.  They lived in the Scottish Borders, he was a successful woollen manufacturer and she was mother to 8 children and did a lot of work for charity and bred dogs.  They married in 1877.  The photo is rather unusual as it's printed on very thin paper and the original is rather creased and torn (I've cropped and tidied this up) The photo is taken outside their house "Eastfield" in Galashiels, which they bought in 1881, could it have been taken to celebrate the purchase?

Thanks in anticipation

This is a photograph of my 3 x Great Grandparents Joseph Cook (1835-1908) and Mary Marshall (1835-?)
They were born, lived and raised their family in the villages between Rotherham & Barnsley.
Joseph was a coal miner and probably worked for the Earl Fitzwilliam in the collieries around Elsecar.
Mary Marshall worked as a housekeeper in her home village of Thorpe Hesley and in Sheffield.
They married in 1865 in Wentworth Chapel.

The original photograph is small approx carte de viste size and stiff

Can anybody estimate the date of the photograph? was it possibly taken to celebrate their marriage?

Many Thanks

Gavin

Northumberland / Your Paintings

Dear All

There has been an on-going project to photograph every painting held in public collections in the UK - There are over 210,000

The pictures are now online at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/search

They currently only filed by artist and title so you have to be careful when you search as say "Northumberland" may not be in the title of the painting.

There is an ongoing project to tag the pictures which you can join to improve the search.

My favourite find was this one of Blyth

http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/blyth-northumberland-57727

This dates from 1824 - I've seen poor reproductions in books about Blyth.  This new photo has a lot more detail in it.

There are 179 paintings with Northumberland in the title and 161 with Newcastle in.

I liked this one dating from 1800's

Northumberland / Armstrong College War Memorial
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 22:46 GMT (UK)  »
When I visited  Newcastle University last week I had any opportunity to take this photo of a the Armstrong College War Memorial.

At the time of WW1 Armstrong College was part of Durham University (Newcastle Uni was not set up until the 1960's)

Somebody might find this useful one day!

Northumberland / Where is / was Gladstone Street
« on: Sunday 04 November 12 23:27 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Great Great Grandfather, Thomas Hodgson, born 1837 in Blyth was living, according to the 1871 census, in Gladstone Street in St Andrews Parish, Newcastle - U -Tyne. I've checked on Google Maps but it's come up with a blank in the right part of town - was it re-named or demolished?

Thanks

Gavin
