The Common Room / "Melshier, England"?? (on death record)
« on: Saturday 28 May 05 09:59 BST (UK)  »
Burial record below for Jesse Wicks, born in England, lived in Canada and died in the U.S.

....WICKS Jesse born Melshier, England & native of Canada; died Nov 5, 1884; aged 56y; husb of Jane....

I don't understand what "Melshier" is referring to on the Cemetery record.  Is there a place or even a parish in England with this name?

Boy, was I ever confused...I have corrected what I should have written the first time. Hope it makes more sense now.

Robert White Nicol (b. abt 1855) married Jane Scott Nov 7, 1890 in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. They married and lived in Govan and I have found most of the 14 children's birth records at High Church, Glasgow. I have not found them on any census yet as the children were born from 1891-1910 and only 7 reached adulthood. (I'm denied access to the newer census sites)

Robert's father,  Henry Nicol b. 1832 married July 14,1854 to Christina Whyte

Christina's father  Robert Whyte b. 1806 m. Christian Gilmour in 1820

Here's my confusion:
 ???
Christina's father Robert Whyte was born Mar 10, 1806 and christened Mar 16, 1806 Kinnettles, Angus, Scotland  (he m. Christian Gilmour)

The marriage dates we have (Oct 22, 1820, and also Nov 17, 1820) would have made Robert Whyte only 14 years old when he married?  Is this possible, and where would I be able to find out if either of these dates are valid? I can't find them on any of the census that are available to me.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1891,1901 Govan (Robert/Jane White)
« on: Friday 22 April 05 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Govan, Glasgow, Scotland

Robert White b. 1855 (m. 1890) to Jane Scott b. 1871
Their first child was born sept 1891

They should be found with children in 1901 Census
(Janet 1893, Annie 1894, Henry 1898, Jane 1900)

(14 births from 1891 - 1910)

Some known addresses were:
(between 1891-1901)
? Rolex of Glasgow (first birth record)
30 Elder St, Govan
54 Fairfield, Govan
76 Roodspark, Govan
------------------
(between 1901-1910)
73 Roodspark
7 Greenfield

Stories handed down include Robert White being a Hairdresser/barber, (a baker?), and a boilermaker and riveter holderoner.

I'm not able to access the site for 1901 census etc without a credit card number....is there anywhere else to look?

Lanarkshire / Thomas Nicol (m. Mary or Margaret?)
« on: Friday 22 April 05 06:05 BST (UK)  »
I can't find the Thomas Nicol and Mary Ramsay that were named as the parents on their son Henry Nicol's Poor Law application in Govan. (The son Henry was born abt 1830 - 1834)

I can only find a "Margaret" Ramsay & Thomas married 1830, but no signs yet of a "Mary" and I don't know if they had a son Henry.

Henry was listed as 55 yrs and Mary as 53 yrs on the above application  in  1889..so that would make Henry born around 1834.

All of the Nicol family that I have found in the other generations are born in Lanarkshire (in the Glasgow area).

Some children I know were born between 1855 and 1867 ( Robert , Christina, Janet, Margaret, Henry)

Sometime before 1881 Christina had remarried. (he may have died)
