London and Middlesex / Still at a brick wall with my Murray family
« on: Saturday 21 October 23 11:22 BST (UK)  »
Good morning all
Following on from my previous post about this family & the very helpful information provided I am unfortunately still not able to pinpoint them as to parents or where in Scotland they came from.
The marriage of Mary Murray to John Busby gives her addreaa as Windmill Street in St James Piccadilly Westminster 15th August 1841 as does Ann Murray in 1838.
Mary Murray (Busby) unhelpfully only gives birthplace Scotland about 1819 through the census.
I am unable to see the marriage of Ann (my ancestry subscription is basic) but I think it might be to a Charles Williams. However if that is correct I cannot find then in Census.
I was also given the information of Thomas Murray marrying Charlotte Cairns 17 July 1836. I found them in 1841. Thomas born 1816 Scotland but no sign of the in 1851.
I was hoping to find Ann Murray in 1841 at Windmill Street or any Murray family there but no luck.
I would appreciate any further help to with this brick wall.
Many thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Thomas Murray marriage to Charlotte Cairns
« on: Saturday 26 August 23 10:34 BST (UK)  »
Could SKS lookup the marriage of Thomas Murray to Charlotte Cairns 17 July 1836 St James Piccadilly for me please. It tantalisingly comes up in ancestry but my subscription doesn't allow me to view the details. Particularly the address of Thomas & witnesses & confirmation of James Murray carpenter as the father
Many thanks

London and Middlesex / William Murray 1841 census
« on: Friday 05 May 23 11:21 BST (UK)  »
Good morning
Looking at the 1841 census for William Murray born 1816 on ancestry I am unable to decide if he was born in Ireland or Scotland.  He married Susannah Gibson 1837 in St James Westminster. William was a tailor & his father (from the marriage) was James Murray a carpenter.  On the 1841 census the couple are transcibed as Willm & Susan with their baby son Chas in St Marylebone.  Even reading the instructions I am unable to work out how to do the link for you.  It just does not work for me.  My apologies.
I am hoping someone with better eyes than me can find it so that at least I can narrow down where to look for my William.
Many thanks in advance

Armed Forces / Guards bearskin plumes
« on: Friday 03 June 22 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Watching the trooping of the colour yesterday I noted that some guards had plumes.  Looking on the internet I understand the different colours refer to different regiments but could not find out why only some had plumes & not others. Please could someone clear this little mystery for me.
Many thanks

Other Countries / Ernest Herbert Pullinger El Salvador
« on: Tuesday 29 March 22 10:01 BST (UK)  »
I am new to research in El Salvador so am hoping someone can give me guidance to further information regarding the Pullinger family.  What I have so far:-
Ernest Herbert Pullinger married Elena Margarita Avila 1912 San Miguel.  His parents are given as Edward John Pullinger & Elizabet Ferman, Elena's as Gregorio Avila Villafane & Margarita Bustamente.
From the UK 1939 registration his occupation is given as metal mining engineer & I believe he was born 9 July 1883 Uitenhage Cape Colony.
Edward & Elena had 3 children Dora Margarita, Robert Cecil & Ernest Arthur.
Also in UK 1939 there is an Elizabeth A Pullinger bn 12 Dec. 1875 an artist painter & living with Ernest & Elena.
What I really would like to find out is Ernest's parents origins & if they were the original Pullinger's in Africa or there was a previous generation.
Any other snippets of information to help put "meat on the bones" would also be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance for any help given.

Australia / Thomas O'Brien Scone NSW
« on: Saturday 19 March 22 07:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am new to research in NSW & would appreciate some guidance as to where to begin.
Thomas (Patrick) O'Brien married Mary Brown (aka Maria Browne) 1877 in Sydney. They had several children the first three being Mary Theresa bn 1879, Frances Theresa bn 1881 & Louisa Ellen bn 1881 all born in Scone.
What I am trying to establish is the birth places of Thomas & Mary to confirm their link to my family.
Which of the NSW resources would record this information? I seem to be going round in circles at the moment so am hoping sks more familiar can point me in the right direction.
Many thanks

The Common Room / Where is Leontia Hart 1939?
« on: Friday 11 March 22 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate help with finding Leontia Marian Chivers born 1902 in Wandsworth in the 1939 registration.  She married Leonard Ernest Hart in 1932 in Wandsworth & had one son Colin in 1934 also in Wandsworth.  I can find Leonard (a marine underwriter) with his father in Wandsworth in 1939 but no sign of Leontia.  She comes up on the electorial rolls in the 1940's in Surrey but my subscription doesn't show the details.  Leonita dies 1993 in Canterbury.  Therefore she must have been recorded somewhere in 1939 but despite various combinations of searches I have had no luck.
Many thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Cumberland House School Grand Drive Raynes Park
« on: Saturday 05 February 22 11:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find information regarding the above school which I believe my father may have attended up to 1928.  It was a private Catholic School. As Google has not revealed anything I thought I would try a local family history society but struggling to establish which one would cover Raynes Park.
I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction for any resources or if anyone has any local knowledge of the school.
Many thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Cumberland House Grammar School 1920's
« on: Friday 04 February 22 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate it if anyone can help with the following.
On my father's army service he states his last school was Cumberland House Grammar which he left 1928.  He was living at the time in Tooting but the school of course could have been anywhere in London.  I have looked everywhere on Google for mention of this school with no luck so am hoping fresh eyes may be able to come up with some information.
Thanks
