London and Middlesex / Same family 1841 and 1851?
« on: Sunday 29 September 19 20:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am struggling to establish any further positive (or otherwise) evidence that the 1851 household including my gg-grandmother Eliza Hughes (b 1836) is the same as one in 1841. Are there any other potential leads I haven't considered?

1851
HO107/1490/21
34 William Street, Marylebone
Ann Morris, Head, widow, 70, housekeeper, b Middlesex, St Clements Strand
Thomas Morris, son, unmarried, 35 Master Butcher, b Middlesex St Giles
Eliza Hughes, head, widow, 35, laundress b Isle of Wight, Hampshire
Eliza Hughes, daughter, 15, house servant b Marylebone

In later censuses Eliza senior and Thomas Morris are living as man and wife but I can't find a marriage between them. Eliza senior later variouslly gives her birthplace as "Odiham, Hants" and "Hampshire".

1841
HO107/732/2/44
4 Osnaburg Row, St George Hanover Square
Eliza Hughes, 25, drop maker, not born Middlesex
Eliza Hughes, 5 b Middlesex
George Hughes, 3, b Middlesex
Ann Ashford, 60, Laundress, not born Middlesex

I have a probable birth for Eliza
St George Hanover Square
Eliza, of John and Eliza Hughes, Baptised July 31, born July 13, 1836 - father's profession, servant.

At her marriage to William Thomas Reynolds, Eliza junior gives her father as John Hughes, soldier

I feel I could make a breakthrough if I could find:
  • Any other references to Ann Ashford - birth, death census
  • Any other references to George Hughes, b circa 1838 - birth, death, census
  • Any birth for Eliza senior in Odiham or Isle of Wight
  • Any death for John Hughes, father, between 1836 and 1841

Any help gratefully received!

World War One / Uniform mystery - French or otherwise?
« on: Friday 28 September 18 11:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi, looking for some expertise on a couple of nice pictures a friend has provided of her grandfather in uniform. He is believed to be Togolese, with the women in one of the pictures are apparently in Breton dress. Interestingly, the gentleman's surname is believed to be Hughes.

Could anyone start by identifying the uniform and regiment?
Many thanks

Suffolk / Probate indexes query
« on: Monday 30 May 16 09:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm looking for any Frewer wills in the late 1700s/early 1800s, Bury St Edmunds area. I've checked the resources board and more widely and am still unsure whether researching this requires a record office visit - or is there an online resource?

Would I be looking for a copy of Probate Records of the Court of the Archdeacon of Sudbury 1800-1858 amongst other publications?

Many thanks
Rob

Hi,
Do you think this is "Robert Frewer", "Robert Trewer" or something else? This is a marriage in St John the Evangelist, Smith Square, Westminster in 1806. I've also  attached the image for "John Frewen Turner" - he's unconnected, but has both "F" and "T" for comparison, as it's in the same clerk's hand.

Robert signs, so I've included that snippet as well.

Many thanks!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Is this a person or a "thing"?
« on: Saturday 21 May 16 07:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm struggling with a couple of words in this memorial of a deed relating to property in east Yorkshire from 1743. Could this be anything other than "Major pratt"? Such an individual doesn't make much sense to me in the context:

"... all which said premises were late the Lands of Thomas Harland deceased and came to the said George Lawson by Deeds and ffine from him and Mary his wife to Major pratt  and which said Mary was only Sister of Christopher Brigham son of John Brigham by his first wife all deceased and which said John Brigham the father purchased the same of the said Thomas Harland..."

Thanks
Rob

Hi,
Is it possible to do anything with this washed-out photo regarding the contrast and sharpness, and to make the children a little more distinct?
Many thanks if you can help.

The Common Room / Sunken merchant vessel Eleanor Wheatley 1875
« on: Wednesday 13 January 16 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
My roguish gg grandfather David Morgan (b 1826 Newcastle Emlyn and sacked as a Bristol customs officer for drunkenness) went on to be a mate on merchant ships - having to have his mate's certificate renewed three times through loss.

The second renewal, on 16th November 1875, happened as a result of the fact  "that the vessel Eleanor Wheatley, having foundered in the Bay of Biscay on the date above mentioned [6th November 1875] and all my papers were lost in consequence" -  from Ancestry's Master and Mates certificate collection.

Would there be any chance of finding out any more details about this sinking and what happened?
Many thanks
Rob
